Set to be this year’s biggest blockbuster, The Odyssey’s cast has been selected to ‘represent the world’. Fair enough – except that one key country seems to have gone completely unrepresented … There are the American accents, gleaming body suits and a muddy Dunkirk palette. And then there is Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, a casting choice that recently drew racist attacks from the usual moaners of the internet , including Elon Musk, who complained it wasn’t authentic. Authenticity matters. He’s just focusing entirely in the wrong place. To many Greeks, what concerns us most about the first look at Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey is the whereabouts of Billy Zane. Zane, like other beloved members of the Greek diaspora in Hollywood, has recently appeared on “Alternative Odyssey” lists on the Greek side of social media, as well as over dinner table debates from Patras to Palmers Green. (Theo James, Jennifer Aniston, Hank Azaria, and Dave Bautista are among the other nominees.) Greek and Greek Cypriot media platforms are writing open letters . It’s a symptom of feeling left out by Hollywood, again and with no explanation, from our foundational mythologies and epics, with a cast list that features not even a token –opoulos, –edes, or –iannou. Not a single Greek. Continue reading...

Deutsche Bank AG may set aside more money than analysts had expected for souring loans in the three months through June as it cleans up its balance sheet. Credit loss provisions in the quarter “will be lower sequentially, quarter over quarter, perhaps a little bit higher than consensus,” Raja Akram , the lender’s chief financial officer, said at an investor conference on Wednesday. The bank will take a hit of about €100 million ($116 million) to exit non-performing exposures, although the resulting positive effect on its capital ratio “way more than offsets” the drag from the provisions, Akram said at the event hosted by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Deutsche Bank fell 5.4% as of 11:24 a.m. in Frankfurt. The war in Iran has complicated Deutsche Bank’s goal to raise profitability as higher oil prices threaten to curb economic growth and push up defaults. Still, Akram said that the underlying trends in credit quality are proving “pretty favorable” for the German lender and that clients are engaging in key businesses. The CFO said he is “super happy with how April and May started” for the investment banking and capital markets business. Akram said he expects to see growth in Deutsche Bank’s key fixed income and currencies trading and financing arms compared to a year earlier. Read More: JPMorgan, BofA CEOs Predict New Round of Trading Windfalls While most Wall Street firms benefited from the market volatility in the first quarter, Deutsche Bank’s fixed income trading declined slightly, reflecting the impact of a stronger euro and weakness in rates trading — an area that also blindsided Goldman Sachs. Deutsche Bank also couldn’t benefit from volatility in commodities and equities, which it exited years ago. Several large Wall Street banks have recently predicted another banner quarter for their trading desks.

The US is proposing new tariffs of at least 10% on imports from 60 trading partners in President Donald Trump’s biggest move to rebuild his protectionist wall since his earlier levies were struck down by the US Supreme Court.
