US tariffs were down, but they’re not out. Donald Trump is once again proposing levies of at least 10% on imports from 60 trading partners, after his earlier tariffs were killed off by the US Supreme Court. The 10% rate would apply to imports from Canada, Mexico, the European Union, Taiwan and the UK, among other places, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative. The move follows an investigation into how trade partners handle goods allegedly produced by forced labor. Products from other major economies, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Switzerland, would be subject to a 12.5% levy. The move is a major step in Trump’s push to reinstate the tariffs he imposed during his first year in office before they were deemed unconstitutional. A separate raft of 301 investigations includes a review of US trading partners’ excess manufacturing capacity, the findings of which may also be released soon. Trade analysts are speculating whether any future duties from that probe would be stackable on top of those proposed under the forced labor investigation. “Trade partners will be understandably upset by this determination,” said Deborah Elms, head of trade policy at the Hinrich Foundation in Singapore. The levies come at a time when countries around the world are suffering from a shortage of commodities caused by the US-Israeli attack on Iran and the resulting spike in oil and gas prices. In just a little over 10 years, Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers have gone from automotive afterthought to being widely acknowledged as producing some of the most advanced EVs on the planet. There is widespread concern in the U.S. automotive industry about Chinese products entering the U.S. market and significantly undercutting domestic automakers, causing an existential threat to domestic manufacturing. Just recently, Geely became the first Chinese manufacturer to export EV crossovers to Canada, which might be giving the foreign automakers a foot in the door. That might sound like a good time for investors to panic, but let's take a look at the details first. Here's a bit of context for the many concerns surrounding the potential of Chinese EVs entering the U.S. market. First, as previously mentioned, many Chinese automakers have taken advantage of government subsidies and, with their advanced supply chains and cheap labor, can produce EVs at far lower cost. That level of price undercutting makes it incredibly challenging for automakers such as Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM) to compete. The dollar’s failure to rally decisively despite strong domestic growth and increased geopolitical tensions could leave it vulnerable as valuations are elevated, according to Joe Little , the firm’s global chief strategist. “Something has changed because historically that set of preconditions would’ve created a much, much stronger trend in the dollar,” Little said in an interview. “So I don’t think the broad environment has changed that much from the type of dynamics we saw last year where the dollar was tending to trade on a weaker footing as the trend.” A weaker greenback is seen as a key tailwind for emerging markets, easing financial conditions and drawing capital into higher-yielding assets.
