Photo: CCTV A sudden landslide in northwest China’s Gansu province killed 21 forestry workers early Tuesday, local authorities said, marking a deadly geological disaster in the mountainous region. The workers were part of a 33-person crew that was trapped while conducting forest-clearing and tending operations at the Minjiang Forestry General Farm in Longnan city. Rescuers extracted all 33 workers from the debris, with seven sustaining minor injuries and five escaping unharmed, Longnan Executive Vice Mayor Ma Guokai said at a Wednesday press conference.

Germany’s benchmark bond yields climbed above 3% for the first time in nearly a month as a flare-up in fighting in the Middle East lifted oil prices and inflation expectations. Yields on German 10-year bonds rose four basis points to 3.03%, while their two-year counterparts — which are more sensitive to changes in monetary policy – jumped as much as six basis points to 2.65%. Money markets now assign around an 80% chance that the European Central Bank will follow its June rate hike with another quarter-point increase by September. A hike by year-end is fully priced, with traders favoring one more by the middle of next year. Renewed concerns that inflation may prove stickier for longer followed a 3.5% surge in Brent crude prices toward $77 a barrel after the US carried out a new round of strikes in Iran in response to a series of attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. “It is a very good demonstration of why central banks need to remain very cautious,” said Camille de Courcel , head of DM rates strategy and economics for Europe at BNP Paribas on Bloomberg TV. Appetite for the ECB to deliver another interest-rate hike this year is “fairly strong,” she added, saying there may be more evidence of second-round inflationary effects by the September meeting, encouraging it to act. The ECB’s Isabel Schnabel said earlier this week that pipeline and supply-chain pressures remain elevated. Other policymakers believe price pressures are still unfolding, threatening to bolster wages as well as food and services costs in the months to come. French 10-year bonds were even harder hit, lagging German and Italian peers by as much as two basis points, reflecting the uncertain political outlook following right-wing leader Marine Le Pen’s decision to run in next year’s presidential election.
The chills are genuinely spooky in this haunted-house tale about contemporary precarity – a debut that speaks to our times There are, MR James tells us, five conditions that must be met for a perfect ghost story: the pretence of truth, a “pleasing terror”, no explanation of the machinery, no gratuitous horror, and that the story belong to the writer’s (and reader’s) “own day”. In Lauren Mooney’s sharply observed debut novel, Danielle lives a precarious existence as a PA at a dilettante arts charity called Hodgepodge (strapline: “for ideas”) . She types emails, makes tea and increasingly finds herself running personal errands for her monstrous boss Jeannie. Jeannie seems to see no difference between working for the charity, and working for her. After a horrible breakup, Danielle finds herself unexpectedly homeless. With no savings, no bank of Mum and Dad, and no room left in her overdraft, she winds up staying alone in Jeannie’s ancestral home, a rambling pile in the middle of nowhere. “We could do with somebody to take care of the place,” Jeannie says, as Danielle bursts into uncharacteristic tears. “You’d be doing us a huge favour.” Continue reading...

A Grand Day Out ( ★★★★★) from 1989 is a terrifically funny sci-fi adventure which gives us a hilarious teatime shot of inventor Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) and his faithful canine companion and helpmeet Gromit sitting placidly side by side in armchairs and in a front parlour that was surely very old-fashioned even in 1989. It was only on watching this again that I realised who they reminded me of: David Hockney’s mum and dad in his famous portrait My Parents. Continue reading...
