Welcome to our guide to the commodities driving the global economy. Today, Asia Energy Team Leader Stephen Stapczynski looks at efforts to unlock gas shipments trapped in the Middle East. Major liquefied natural gas exporters in the Persian Gulf are preparing for a potential future where disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz persist for longer. In a bid to move their LNG through the critical waterway, QatarEnergy and Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. have begun “ going dark ,” adopting tactics typically employed by Russia’s so-called shadow fleet . That’s got some shipments — though limited — flowing again, and could be seen as a test case for more. It’s a significant shift for the LNG industry, where until recently almost every cargo could be tracked in real time and traded between well-known buyers and sellers. Now, with the Iran war entering its fourth month, QatarEnergy and Adnoc — which together made up a fifth of global LNG exports last year — are turning to alternative practices to ship gas quietly out. That involves switching off vessel-tracking signals. It’s a strategy that’s been used by Russian tankers to evade detection, but the ships carrying Qatari and UAE gas are not sanctioned, and the companies say the measures are intended to protect tankers operating in a conflict zone. The adjustments extend to hiring, with ships forced to replace captains and crew members who are reluctant to navigate the strait. In one case, a Qatari vessel hired crew through an Indonesian recruiter that had previously supplied personnel for ships transporting sanctioned Russian LNG. Following several successful Hormuz transits, empty LNG carriers are now returning to the region to load additional cargoes. Four vessels linked to QatarEnergy and Adnoc have entered the Gulf of Oman in the last few days, near the eastern entrance to Hormuz. One stopped transmitting its location two days ago, suggesting it may already be making the passage through the strait. As the war drags on, the global...

Has Micron ( MU ) replaced Nvidia ( NVDA ) as the 'IT' stock for the AI trade? Primary season: There's a lot on the ballot, especially in California and Los Angeles . Tweet and trade: Citron Research founder Andrew Left is found guilty of securities fraud . New routes FedEx ( FDX ) has finally completed the spinoff of FedEx Freight ( FDXF ), with shares of the latter trading independently to focus on what each business does best. FedEx will continue to handle regular packages, online shopping orders, and overnight envelopes, or the everyday stuff that fits in a standard delivery van. FedEx Freight will take up the heavy B2B cargo volumes that require heavy semi-trucks, with the hope that both companies will run more efficiently and unlock more profit potential. Snapshot: The split has investors asking what further value can be utilized, and FedEx Freight ( FDXF ) CEO John Smith was happy to answer those questions in a series of interviews after ringing the NYSE opening bell on Monday. Among them are margin improvements, customer growth, debt paydowns, and new verticals. On the technology front, the focus is on deploying AI machine learning and self-driving capabilities, which have been making waves amid rapid industry change and disruptive market forces. "When you think about the two types of drivers in the LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) business, you have the pickup and delivery driver that will never be replaced by an autonomous vehicle. The other, the line haul, we've been testing that technology for the last couple of years, and the technology is there. We can leave a yard in Dallas, and it navigates to the interstate, to a facility in Houston, and 99.9% of the time, [the safety driver] never touches one thing," Smith declared. The horizon: "However, the regulatory piece ...

onurdongel/iStock via Getty Images I wanted to take a look at Optical Cable Corporation ( OCC ) to see what is in store for it in this era of advanced technology, that is, AI data centers. I found the thesis to be quite compelling, and the company is most likely going to be my risky play of the year for 2026. I am going to hold it for at least a year to see how it goes. The company Optical Cable Corporation is quite self-explanatory, but to go in a little deeper, it is a specialty manufacturer of fiber optic and copper data communication cables and other connectivity solutions, primarily serving enterprise and specialty markets in the US and internationally. The company was founded by former ITT ( ITT ) engineers who worked under fiber optics inventor Charles Kao, and pioneered tight-buffered, tight-bound fiber optic cable technology, which was originally developed for the US military. Briefly on Financials Let’s take a look at a little bit of a zoomed out look of OCC’s revenue performance. We can see that the company experienced some negativity in the 2023-2024 period, and it has been back to some growth since. The company’s customers were doing some destocking during that period, so OCC saw some operating declines, which were out of its hands. If there was no demand, there was nothing it could have done about it. Seeking Alpha The latest quarter, Q1 ’26 , shows that OCC saw only a slight increase in sales, of about 4.4%, to $16.4m. That’s not a very impressive growth rate, but it could be just the beginning of growth going forward. In terms of profitability and efficiency, OCC has not been a very profitable business for a while now. In fact, the company’s profitability hasn’t recovered to the highs it reached back in the dotcom era. After that whole crash, the company’s profitability continued to deteriorate and is only now starting to show some signs of getting better. Seeking Alpha While the company’s top-line performance has been lackluster, the company’s profi...

Now, in a nod to that style, Lipa is ushering in a new era of nonconformity Fifty five years after Bianca Jagger shocked onlookers when she wore a Yves Saint Laurent skirt-suit to marry Mick Jagger, her alternative wedding look has become a firm favourite among a new generation of brides. On Sunday, pop star Dua Lipa became the latest celebrity to endorse the trend when she married actor Callum Turner during an intimate ceremony in London. Photos of the couple on the steps of Old Marylebone town hall showed them grinning under a flurry of confetti, Turner in a navy suit, Lipa in an ivory skirt suit ripped straight from the pages of the Jagger stylebook complete with a wide-brimmed hat. Denis Shevchuk/iStock via Getty Images Investment Thesis C$0.82/Mcf: That is Peyto's ( PEY:CA ), ( PEYUF ) cost to produce and deliver its gas to the market. These numbers are exceptional. There is no significant gas producer in Canada that does it for less. We can see it in the peer chart: 2025 Gas Field-Level Profitability Peer Comparison (Based on Company Reports) ARC Resources ( ARX:CA ), ( AETUF ) C$1.71/Mcf Tourmaline ( TOU:CA ), ( TRMLF ) C$1.84/Mcf Birchcliff ( BIR:CA ), ( BIREF ) C$1.33/Mcf Of course, there are companies that produce gas cheaper, for example, Surge or Cardinal, but we need to take into consideration that they are not operating 17 gas processing plants across the Deep Basin of Alberta. The cost advantage can be seen as something structural. Peyto owns its gathering, processing, and compression infrastructure outright. But Montney peers have to pay more, the C$0.60/Mcf+ just to move gas to the market. That is something that Peyto doesn't have to worry about. Now I want to talk about the macro context before going any further. Western Canada will most likely remain oversupplied for a long time. When AECO goes slightly above C$3.00, well economics get so favourable that the producers will speed up their drilling almost instantly, and that efficiency pushes the price back down. Canadian operators are known to be exceptional at producing gas, and that capability is a structural feature of the basin. To be honest, I don't see LNG Canada Phase 2 as the transformational catalyst it's often viewed as. Supply is bound to fill that demand as fast as it's created. And if you went long Peyto and expected a permanent AECO structural re-rating, I'm afraid you bought it for the wrong reason. I see it differently. Peyto is the top bet in the Canadian gas space if you want exposure to gas while waiting for the volatility that is sure to come. Since my March 2024 initiation at C$14.50, the total return has reached roughly 90%, including dividends, even without...

Diana's ( DSX ) offer is below Genco's ( GNK ) current mean analyst net asset value estimate of $26.66 and the current median estimate of $27.10 "in a period of rising asset values across the industry," the company said. Genco ( GNK ) said its board is willing to meet again if Diana ( DSX ) submits an offer that "adequately compensates shareholders for the full underlying value" of Genco's assets and provides an appropriate control premium. Genco ( GNK ) had previously received and rejected bids from Diana ( DSX ) at $20.60/share and $23.50/share.
