Yuras Igorevich/iStock via Getty Images The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System reported on Tuesday that firearm background checks were down 8.8% on a sequential basis in May to 1,942,981. It was the first time background checks fell below 2M since last September. Background checks were down 6.5% on a year-over-year basis. The background checks have correlated closely to actual firearm sales in the past. The all-time high for firearm background checks was March 2021, when 4,691,738 firearm background checks were done in a single month. FBI firearm background checks then fell progressively later in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Industry insiders expect firearm demand in 2026 to be slightly below, with macroeconomic headwinds such as inflation from tariffs, interest rates, and consumer spending pressure as the main risk rather than a collapse in underlying interest. Stocks that have some connection to firearm demand developments to varying degrees include Smith & Wesson ( SWBI ), Sturm Ruger ( RGR ), Vista Outdoor, Sportsman's Warehouse ( SPWH ), Ammo ( POWW ), ammunition manufacturer Olin Corporation ( OLN ), outdoors retailer American Outdoor Brands ( AOUT ), hunting gear seller Dick's Sporting Goods ( DKS ), gunfire locator firm SoundThinking ( SSTI ), ammunition provider National Presto Industries ( NPK ), taser maker Axon Enterprise ( AXON ), and retailer Academy Sports and Outdoors ( ASO ). Mario Tama/Getty Images News Californians are heading to the polls on Tuesday to vote in primary elections to select candidates for state governor, House representatives, Los Angeles mayor and other state and local offices. The primaries will be the first time that California uses its new congressional map. The state passed Proposition 50 last year in response to Texas' redistricting that favored Republicans. The move could help California Democrats gain five House seats. In the spotlight is the race to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who served two terms as California's governor and can't run again because of term limits. But the race has been chaotic, especially after former Rep. Eric Swalwell — widely viewed as a frontrunner — suspended his campaign in April as he was accused of sexual misconduct. Recent polls indicate Xavier Becerra, former Health and Human Services secretary, and billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer are leading the Democratic primary. Others in the race are former Rep. Katie Porter and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host backed by President Donald Trump, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco have emerged as leading candidates among Republicans. Notably, California has not elected a Republican governor since 2006. Under California's top-two primary system, commonly called a "jungle primary," the two candidates with the most votes on Tuesday will advance to the general election — regardless of their political parties. Another closely watched race is the one for California's 11th Congressional District seat, currently held by Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who decided to retire at the end of her term after nearly four decades in Washington. State Sen. Scott Wiener is widely seen as the frontrunner, followed by San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan (endorsed by Pelosi) and former tech executive Saikat Chakrabarti. In Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass is contesting for reelection. Her top competitors are city councilmember Nithya Raman a...

Investors are about to get a read on the durability of the soaring rally in cybersecurity stocks when two of the industry’s major players report earnings in the coming days. Palo Alto Networks Inc. , whose shares leaped 57% last month alone, releases its results after the market close on Tuesday. CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. , which soared 64% in May, reports on Wednesday. Both stocks are coming off their best months ever, trading at records after gaining more than 60% in 2026, and are among the 30 top performers in the S&P 500 Index this year. The gains are being fueled by broad enthusiasm for technology companies that are deemed artificial intelligence winners. And it marks a shift in sentiment from the start of the year, when cybersecurity shares broadly slumped on fears about potential disruption from Anthropic PBC’s Mythos model. “People came to their senses and realized, no, this is not going to stop people from buying security, it actually could create more demand for security,” said Jordan Klein , managing director at Mizuho Securities USA. If Wall Street sees solid numbers from Palo Alto and CrowdStrike this week, “it’s going to be off to the races.” Much of the cybersecurity group is running hot right now, making it one of the true bright spots in the tech landscape. The Global X Cybersecurity ETF, ticker BUG , is up 27% this year after surging 37% in May, its best month since it was launched in 2019. By comparison, the iShares Expanded Tech-Software ETF, ticker IGV , is only up 1.9% in 2026, as software shares slump. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index has gained 21% since the start of January. To see how strong earnings and an encouraging outlook can further juice these stocks, look at Fortinet Inc. Its shares shot up 20% on the day after its early May earnings as the company raised its billings forecast. That bodes well for Palo Alto and CrowdStrike, Klein said, since the report “brought people back very quickly thinking, you know, this was a great print and t...

Marvell Technology Inc. shares surged 26% in premarket trading on Tuesday after Nvidia Corp. ’s Jensen Huang predicted that the semiconductor and networking company will be the next business to hit a $1 trillion valuation, more than five times its current capitalization. Marvell’s valuation will soar now that the age of “useful AI has arrived,” Huang, the chief executive officer of the largest publicly traded company, said Tuesday at Computex trade show in Taipei. He was joined by Marvell CEO Matt Murphy on stage. Marvell shares have gained 158% this year, giving the Santa Clara, California-based company a market value of $192 billion. If they hold on to their gain when the market opens, it will be the biggest intraday jump since May 2023. The biggest tech companies, such as Amazon.com Inc. , Alphabet Inc. and Microsoft Corp. , have pledged to lay out hundreds of billions of dollars to build out their data center capacity and invest in AI. Demand for products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic PBC ’s Claude have created a gold rush to capture market share for the infrastructure supporting the new technology. Huang’s forecast came amid a flurry of bullish news from semiconductor companies on Tuesday. Memory chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. said it will double its memory chip production capacity to easy a supply crunch. STMicroelectronics NV nearly doubled its forecast for revenue from its data centers business in 2026, and said the sales could double again next year. Chip designer Arm Holdings Plc expects to hit its target of $15 billion in sales for its own semiconductors earlier than anticipated because of demand from the AI boom, CEO Rene Haas said. Nvidia has ridden the wave as well, becoming the primary supplier of the GPU chips used for AI. Its shares have gained more th...
