South Korean firms have increasingly turned to short-term financing as rising government bond yields drive up borrowing costs in the corporate debt market. Companies issued 741.4 trillion won ($488.4 billion) of short-term bonds and commercial paper in the year through April, up 47.1% from a year earlier, according to data from the Financial Supervisory Service and the Korea Securities Depository. Local corporate bond issuance slumped 34.1% from a year earlier, the data show. Governments and companies across Asia are showing a preference for shorter-dated securities as inflation concerns fueled by the Iran war-driven oil shock push long-term yields higher. The shift allows borrowers to retain funding flexibility and avoid making long-term rate bets at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty. “Short-term funding costs for commercial paper have remained low, leading to a significant increase in corporate commercial paper issuance,” Eun Gie Kim , a credit analyst at Samsung Securities Co., wrote in a report. The yield on Korea’s AA-rated 3-year non-guaranteed corporate bonds has risen almost 100 basis points so far this year to 4.4%, the highest since November 2023. In comparison, the rate on three-month won commercial paper has fallen to 3.06% from a high of 3.27% in early 2026. That said, Kim of Samsung Securities said an increase in short-term rates “is inevitable” given rising odds of interest-rate hikes by the Bank of Korea. Consumer inflation accelerated to the fastest pace in more than two years in May, data showed Tuesday, reinforcing the central bank’s tilt toward higher rates . While the BOK left rates unchanged last week, two board members dissented in favor of a hike. “Firms will need to diversify their funding channels back to corporate bonds before the third quarter, when short-term rates are expected to spike,” he added. Samsung Securities expects the central bank to raise rates in July and October. Read more: Korean Corporate Bond Sentiment Improv...
