Flashpop/DigitalVision via Getty Images Hardware and the AI trade have dominated equity markets for the last several years, and especially during the most recent rally since the perceived cooling of tensions in the US-Israel-Iran conflict beginning around March 31 st of this year. One of the “bottleneck” themes within the space has centered around memory companies that sell to the builders of AI infrastructure. While many U.S.-based investors can easily invest in U.S.-based Micron Technology, Inc. ( MU ), getting exposure to Korea-based SK hynix and Samsung ( SSNLF ) can prove more difficult. However, the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF ( EWY ) is one relatively easy way to gain exposure to these Korean-based memory companies. The fact sheet for EWY summarizes the fund as follows: “The iShares MSCI South Korea ETF seeks to track an index of South Korean equities. The fund offers a way to express a single-country view and seek targeted exposure to companies in South Korea.” At the time of writing, according to Morningstar, two companies comprise over 50% of the portfolio: Source: https://www.morningstar.com/etfs/arcx/ewy/portfolio with highlight by author So, while the ETF reflects the broader Korean stock market, it really amounts to a bet on SK hynix and Samsung, and, again, as such, is a good way for investors to gain exposure to these two companies. The fortunes of these two companies are going to determine, in an outsized way, the fortunes of the broader ETF. They have done so during the last year or so, where the ETF has seen an ~4x return on the back of the major run-ups in the stock prices of Samsung and SK hynix, and, if there is any sort of a downturn in these companies’ fortunes in the future, that will be reflected to an outsized degree, once again, in the performance of the ETF. In this article, I will argue that, if you have missed this rally up until this point, now is definitely not the time to jump on the train. In fact, if you are on the train, it’s pr...

David A. Grogan | CNBC Berkshire Hathaway is deepening its bet on artificial intelligence and one of the industry's dominant players, investing an additional $10 billion in Alphabet through a private stock purchase. Alphabet said Monday it reached an agreement to sell $5 billion of its Class A shares to Berkshire at $351.81 apiece and another $5 billion of Class C stock at $348.20 per share. The transaction adds to a position Berkshire has been rapidly building over the past three quarters, marking one of the conglomerate's largest equity investments. The latest purchase highlights Berkshire's growing conviction in Alphabet's position at the center of the AI boom, spanning search, cloud computing and digital infrastructure. It also offers an early glimpse into CEO Greg Abel's capital allocation approach, suggesting Warren Buffett's successor is willing to commit significant sums to tech companies as Berkshire seeks new avenues for deploying its nearly $400 billion cash pile. The stance marks a shift for a conglomerate that has traditionally favored businesses with more predictable economics. Buffett famously characterized Berkshire's investment in Apple as a consumer bet. The deal comes after Berkshire first disclosed a stake in Alphabet during the third quarter of 2025, when it purchased roughly 17.8 million shares. Since then, the conglomerate has dramatically increased its investment for two consecutive quarters, turning the Google parent into one of Berkshire's biggest positions. This is breaking news.
