atakan/iStock via Getty Images S&P 500 Earnings Power Drives Rally The S&P 500 ( SP500 ) index remains Wall Street’s most watched stock benchmark, representing about 80% of market capitalization. The index reached record highs last week, even in the face of geopolitical uncertainty and rising inflation . Despite concerns over elevated valuations, the S&P 500’s forecasted earnings growth has outpaced the rally in price, according to Goldman Sachs, which expects the index to surpass 8,000 by year end. Goldman Sachs As earnings season winds down, the S&P 500 is on track to post its strongest quarter of growth in five years. With 97% of firms reporting, Q1 2026 EPS is expected to rise by 28.6% year-over-year, led by the tech sector at +54.3%. Net profit margins, meanwhile, are expected to come in at 14.8%, which would top the five-year average by 2.5 percentage points, another sign of improving fundamentals. The benchmark’s top 10 holdings account for about 38% of the index’s total value, but most have Hold quant ratings, weighed down by weak valuation factor grades. edb3_16/iStock via Getty Images Canada’s housing market continues to face subdued activity, with regional disparities and ongoing pressure in segments like condos. Rishi Sondhi, Economist at TD Bank Group, says affordability constraints and elevated supply are likely to weigh on the pace of a recovery. Transcript Greg Bonnell: The Canadian housing market has seen a period of cooling, with economic headwinds and population shifts weighing on demand. But as we head into those summer months, you can feel the warmth already. Are there any signs of demand picking up out there? Joining us now to discuss is Rishi Sondhi, economist with TD Economics. Great to have you back on the program. Rishi Sondhi: Thanks so much for having me, Greg. Greg Bonnell: The Canadian housing market, I know a lot of Canadians follow it very carefully. We've been through a period now that I think we're not accustomed to of cooling. What is the overall health of the housing market right now? Rishi Sondhi: Well, I wouldn't say it's robust. I would say it's far from that, in fact. Just to give some context around some numbers, Canadian average home prices are down on a year-to-date, year-on-year basis, for example, as are sales pretty much wall-to-wall decline across provinces. So it's not a great market still, although it is, of course, a regional story when you pull apart the Canadian backdrop. So some markets are doing better than others. So, for example, you're seeing relatively strong price growth in jurisdictions like Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, trend-like price gains in the Atlantic and Alberta. And, of course, it's a pretty well-worn story at this point, I'd say. But bringing up the rear in terms of price gains, or I should say declines, is BC and Ontario. Greg Bonnell: Yeah, they used to be the leaders. What happened in this market over the last several years that had this reversal of fortune? Rishi Sondhi: Yeah, so it's very much an interest rate story. I mean, there was extremely...
