STORY: BYD ended its longest streak of falling sales in May. That was despite weakening demand in its home Chinese market and growing competition. The Chinese electric vehicle giant saw global sales rise 0.3% from a year earlier. Reuters calculated it sold just over 383,400 motors. May's uptick came after eight months of sales contraction. Overseas shipments continued to post strong growth as sales rose just over 80%. It was supported by stronger demand for EVs in Europe and emerging markets. That was driven by higher oil prices following the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. BYD and other Chinese automakers have gained in Europe as demand for EVs continues to support overall market growth. It offset persistent softness at home where BYD's sales fell just under a quarter. But its home market is still challenging after the auto companies fought a bruising price war. While consumer demand has also weakened in China's slowing economy.

The April figure represents a 0.9% growth year-over-year. Spending on private construction rose 0.4% from the prior month to $1,639.7B in April. Residential construction increased 0.8% to $909.9B, while nonresidential construction grew 0.2% to $729.8B. Public construction spending was up 0.4% to $532.7B in April. Educational construction increased 0.6% to $113.7B, and highway construction grew 0.4% to $149.6B. During the first four months of 2026, construction spending amounted to $657.2B (+0.2% year-over-year).
