In the commodities asset class that includes six sectors: precious metals, base metals, energy, grains and oilseeds, animal proteins, and soft commodities, three of the six are agricultural. In 2024 and 2025, three soft commodities, Arabica coffee, cocoa, and frozen concentrated orange juice, reached record highs before correcting. Animal protein prices have been trending higher since the 2020 pandemic-inspired low, while grain and oilseeds, which peaked in 2022, fell sharply, reaching lows in 2025. Two of three agricultural sectors rise in Q1 2026 The three agricultural commodity sectors of the raw materials asset class are grains and oilseeds, animal proteins, and soft commodities. In Q1 2026, the grain and oilseed sector gained 14.96%. CBOT corn futures moved 3.98% higher, while soybean futures moved 13.63% higher. CBOT soft red winter wheat futures prices rose 21.55%, while CBOT hard red winter wheat futures posted a 23.46% gain. The MGE spring wheat futures rose 14.55%, while oat and rough rice futures posted gains. Soybean products rose, with soybean oil leading the way on the upside with an over 43% gain. Meanwhile, in Q1 2026, the animal protein composite moved 6.03% higher. Live cattle futures were 4.93% higher, while the feeder cattle futures moved 6.89% to the upside. Lean hog futures gained 6.26%. Soft commodities, which had led the asset class higher in 2024 and corrected in 2025, fell 11.02% in Q1 2026.
