A team of highly skilled mountaineers, known in Nepal as “icefall doctors”, began fixing ropes and ladders on Mount Everest last month to prepare for the coming spring climbing season. The carriers derived the $2.5B figure by estimating the incremental jet fuel costs they expect to incur this year versus earlier forecasts. The calculation assumes average jet fuel prices will remain above $4 per gallon for the rest of the year, the people said. The discussions around a potential aid package are ongoing and expected to continue in the coming days. Separately, Spirit Airlines ( FLYYQ ) is engaged in discussions with U.S. officials over a $500M support package, signaling that financial strain extends beyond the immediate group behind the $2.5B proposal. Other listed low-cost peers such as Allegiant Travel Company ( ALGT ) and Sun Country Airlines ( SNCY ) were not named in the report but face similar macroeconomic headwinds given their comparable business models. Larger airlines, including United Airlines ( UAL ) and American Airlines ( AAL ), have also trimmed outlooks amid higher fuel expenses tied to geopolitical tensions.
