Michael Fitzsimmons/iStock Editorial via Getty Images The U.S. Air Force and Navy proposed stepping up purchases of Lockheed Martin's ( LMT ) F-35 fighter jet over the next five years, a show of confidence for a plane that critics have said is becoming obsolete, Bloomberg reported Friday. Planned purchases of the Air Force model would rise steadily from 38 jets in FY 2027 to 42 in 2028, 46 in 2029, and 48 in both 2030 and 2031, while purchases by the Navy and Marine Corps would jump to 47 jets next year from this year’s 23, before dropping to 43 in 2028 and 38 or fewer each year during 2029-31, according to new projections. The increased quantities are part of the Trump administration's request to Congress to increase the defense budget by more than 40% to $1.5T, which is bound to meet resistance from both Democrats and fiscal conservatives. The planned purchases would be good news for Lockheed ( LMT ), with the total number of F-35s requested up to 85 jets from the 47 Congress approved for this year. The projections failed to improve the performance of Lockheed's ( LMT ) stock, which has declined for nine straight sessions—slumping 17.1% during the period—and fell another 3.1% on Friday to finish at $513.45, its lowest close since January 7.
