S&P Global Ratings cut the outlook on Finland ’s debt to negative from stable, as the Nordic nation’s debt pile keeps growing. “The negative outlook reflects persistent risks to Finnish public finances stemming from low growth, aging demographics, and rising defense and interest expenditure , ” rating company said in a statement , that also saw the country’s rating maintained at AA+ , the second-highest grade and nine levels above junk. Finland’s debt reached about 88.5% of gross domestic product at the end of 2025, according to Eurostat . While many European nations have larger debt loads, Finland’s is currently growing at the fastest pace in the European Union, in part as it ramps up defense spending due to neighboring Russia’s worsening tensions with NATO. “In the absence of deeper consolidation efforts, or more buoyant growth, we see risks that Finland’s general government debt to GDP will continue to increase to almost 95% by 2029 and higher thereafter,” S&P said. It isn’t the only credit assessor to take notice: In July 2025, Finland suffered its first credit downgrade in almost a decade when Fitch Ratings lowered its rating by one notch from AA+ to AA, citing insufficient fiscal consolidation to stabilize the country’s high debt over the medium term. Read More: Finland’s Credit Rating Cut at Fitch as Debt Pile Keeps Growing S&P’s “decision unfortunately signals that there are generally pressures toward a downgrade in the credit rating,” Finance Minister Riikka Purra told Yle on Saturday, adding that the outlook change would have no immediate impact on Finland’s debt-servicing costs. “If the state of public finances does not improve, then of course it is a very bad development, but we are not yet in an acute crisis,” she said. In addition to Russia’s war against Ukraine, the war in the Middle East will delay Finland’s economic recovery. High oil prices are weakening external demand and households’ purchasing power, hampering the growth of both exports and priv...

cbarnesphotography/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images My Investing Philosophy I like quality companies that pay rising dividends. I also like to find companies that fit these definitions that are out of favor and selling at a discount to their respective fair values. I use multiple sources of analysis and expected growth rates as well as articles, opinions, and corporate data releases/presentations. But I prefer to discern from all that for myself what I really expect from a company and then plug my assumptions into my models to find what I believe to be the true fair value of a company based upon discounted future cash flows and my own required rate of return. I like to add stocks of companies to my portfolio that I expect to have competitive advantages, good management, and strong balance sheets combined with a business model that has weathered multiple periods of economic and geopolitical turmoil only to emerge stronger, which demonstrates resilience. I believe that Keurig Dr Pepper ( KDP ) fits into that description and I will use this article to explain why. Company Background Keurig Dr Pepper has formed as a result of the merger between Dr Pepper Snapple (DPS) and Keurig Green Mountain in mid-2018. The company ranks as the third largest non-alcoholic beverage company in the U.S. behind PepsiCo ( PEP ) and Coca-Cola ( KO ). KDP has three reporting units: U.S. Refreshment Beverages, U.S. Coffee, and International. Its major brands include Dr Pepper, Snapple, Keurig, Sunkist, Canada Dry, 7UP, A&W Root Beer, Core, and Bai, among others. KDP announced an acquisition of JDE Peet’s, a Dutch coffee company, for ~$18.4B. According to management , when the acquisition is completed and operations integrated, the company plans to spin off the combined Keurig and JDE Peet’s Coffee as a separate, standalone coffee company listed in the U.S. This is expected to allow the two distinct companies to focus on respective growth and capital allocation without the stress of vying f...

Wyatte Grantham-Philips | AP The Army Special Forces soldier criminally charged in connection with making hugely profitable bets on Polymarket related to the U.S. military raid that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was released Friday on an unsecured $250,000 bond after appearing in federal court in Raleigh, N.C. Master Sgt. Gannon Ken Van Dyke was ordered to appear Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan , where he has been indicted on wire fraud and other charges related to allegedly using classified information about the planned operation to win nearly $410,000 from the bets and then trying to cover up the scheme. Kalshi , Polymarket's leading competitor in the prediction markets sector, confirmed on Friday that it had blocked Van Dyke from opening a Kalshi account. Elisabeth Diana, a spokeswoman for Kalshi, said she could not give details of when the 38-year-old Van Dyke tried to open an account or why he was prevented from doing so. Van Dyke, who has served in Army since 2008, was arrested Thursday in North Carolina, where he is based at Fort Bragg. takasuu Wall Street's major averages ended mixed on Friday, but the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq achieved another record close as investors evaluated the latest developments in the Middle East, including a three-week extension of the truce between Israel and Lebanon. The benchmark S&P 500 ( SP500 ) closed up 0.8% to another record high of $7,165.08 points, while the heavy-tech Nasdaq Composite gained 1.64%. Meanwhile, the blue-chip Dow was down 0.16%. On a week-to-date basis, the benchmark S&P 500 is up 0.55%. Seeking Alpha analyst Agar Capital said that t he key takeaway from the tape is not that investors are simply disregarding geopolitical issues, but rather that investors now believe there is a greater chance of a “containment” type of outcome. The analyst added that a 0.55% weekly increase in the S&P 500 shows investors' willingness to continue to buy into the index; however, the fact that we are seeing such narrow breadth across many sectors indicates to me that this is still more of an "on the edge" risk-on situation versus an outright, all-in re-positioning. On a sector-by-sector basis, five of the 11 S&P segments closed in the green. Technology ( XLK ) and Energy ( XLE ) were the strongest performers this week, with gains of 3.84% and 3.4%, respectively. Agar Capital argued that i nvestors' rapid transition back to focusing on earnings (and specifically investing in artificial intelligence) based on reduced geopolitical uncertainty, clearly illustrated through Technology's leadership within this rally, also indicates that many investors believe the worst of the current situation may be behind us and demonstrates investors' willingness to return to issues that were left pending a few months ago. The war continues, negotiations have not yet led to a happy ending, but meanwhile, tech companies are still making profits. At the other end of the spectrum, Healthcare ( XLV ) and Communication Services ( XLC ) were the biggest detractors this week, with losses of 3.07% ...

Carlos Barria | Reuters Nvidia shares closed at a record on Friday for the first time since October, pushing the company's market cap past $5 trillion, as investors piled into the AI chip trade ahead of earnings next week from tech's hyperscalers. The stock rose 4.3% to close at $208.27. Nvidia is up more than 14-fold since the end of 2022, driven by soaring demand for artificial intelligence services and models. Nvidia's graphics processing units are relied on by Google, Microsoft , Meta and Amazon as well as model developers OpenAI and Anthropic. Friday's rally was sparked by better-than-expected earnings late Thursday from chipmaker Intel , which has largely been left out of the AI market until recently. Intel shares spiked 24% , their best performance since 1987. Advanced Micro Devices , which competes with Nvidia and Intel, jumped 14%, while mobile device chipmaker Qualcomm climbed 11%. Investors had been pulling back on large-cap technology stocks as oil prices were skyrocketing due to the war in Iran and supply chain disruptions that followed. But wide swaths of technology are back in favor of late, with demand for AI infrastructure showing no signs of slowing. The Nasdaq is now up 15% in April, headed for its best month since April 2020. Nvidia does face increasing competition in AI. Alphabet , a major Nvidia customer, announced new chips that will try to take on Nvidia's offerings when they become available to cloud customers later this year.
