MaxLinear ( MXL ) and Intel ( INTC ) are leading a semiconductor surge, with the shares rocketing 80% and 24%, respectively, during late Friday morning market action. Other big names hopped on board the rocketship. Nvidia ( NVDA ) popped up 4.5%, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ) gained nearly 5%, and AMD ( AMD ) shot up 13%. Arm Holdings ( ARM ) jumped nearly 15%. Qualcomm ( QCOM ) also joined the rally, climbing by 8%. MaxLinear reported its first-quarter financial results on Friday morning. The company increased its 2026 outlook due to strong demand for its optical data center business performance tied to AI infrastructure. Needham upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold following the report. It set a $60 price target, but MaxLinear is on track to top that target in a single day of trading. "We are bullish on the company's outlook for two main reasons," said Needham analysts, led by N. Quinn Bolton, in an investor note. "Infrastructure surpassed Broadband as the company's largest revenue contributor, and we expect this to drive multiple expansion; and as the business inflects, we expect cash flow to turn meaningfully positive and mitigate any potential risk from the Silicon Motion arbitration." Roth Capital Partners also upgraded MaxLinear to Buy from Neutral and increased its price target to $60 from $18. "We expect steady gross margin levels with tailwind as infrastructure segment revenue increases in the mix," said Roth analysts in an investor note." Based on signs of better participation in high AI infrastructure growth, we are significantly increasing our price target to align MXL's target multiple with the company’s AI infrastructure peers AMD, MRVL, CRDO, and ALAB (all Buy rated), which are trading anywhere between 8x-to-20x CY27 revenue." Intel's surge was also prompted by its first-quarter results and outlook. The Lip-Bu Tan-led chipmaker expects second-quarter revenue to be between $13.8B and $14.8B, with the midpoint of $14.3B well above the $13.0...

adventtr/iStock via Getty Images PENN Entertainment ( PENN ) has been hit hard over the past five years, down a cumulative 80%. A heavy debt burden, losses from online gambling expansion, and a weak regional gaming consumer have led to an inadequate financial profile. The tide does seem to be turning this year, according to management, with their online operations nearly breaking even, helping to improve the leverage profile of the business. With the earnings report today resulting in no positive revision on estimates for the year, there is just still too much resulting leverage risk on the table to make this a viable investment right now, and there are better buys in gaming that investors can consider at this time. Business Profile PENN has two segments: retail and Interactive. Retail is essentially their regional gaming (casino) properties. The company has 42 properties across 19 states concentrated in the mid-Atlantic and Midwest US. The bulk of these properties have the state-level regulations in place to support online gambling, which helps to support total operations and drive a flywheel effect. The company's asset base is of a low-quality nature relative to Las Vegas Strip-centric companies like MGM and WYNN. Regional gaming is essentially a levered play on consumer discretionary spending, and customers tend to be much more fickle/unwilling to spend in times of economic stress. Not all regional assets are created equal, and there are some great properties out there, but these are simply tougher assets to operate largely because of lower consumer foot traffic in the first place. Investor Presentation The company also has 5 projects under development, with two of them recently opened. These recent openings are for the Hollywood Joliet relocation (opened August 2025) in Illinois, as well as the M Resort Hotel Towe r (opened in December). The company has the relocation of the Hollywood Aurora under development, as well as the Columbus Hotel Tower and the Council ...

e-crow/iStock via Getty Images By Łukasz Zembik Strong start followed by corrections The first quarter in the gold market was marked by high volatility. Prices reached a record high of nearly USD 5,600 per ounce in January, followed by two sharp corrections. These price swings had a clear impact on investor behavior, particularly visible in flows into gold-backed ETFs. After strong inflows in January, February saw a noticeable slowdown, while March brought clear outflows, especially in North America. Inflows into gold-backed ETFs, weekly data (Source: WGC) Weak overall ETF demand As a result, the entire first quarter ended with only modest net inflows, significantly lower than a year earlier. This may limit overall demand for gold, which in 2025 exceeded 5,000 tonnes and reached a record level, supported largely by strong purchases of bars and coins. High prices weigh on jewelry demand Elevated price levels are beginning to negatively affect jewelry demand. Gold is currently trading around USD 4,700 per ounce, well above the 2025 average, reducing consumer interest in this segment. Central banks remain a key factor Central bank activity continues to play an important role. For instance, the Turkish central bank was forced to significantly reduce its gold reserves in March to support its domestic currency amid tensions related to the conflict with Iran. Medium-term outlook remains positive Despite short-term weakness in physical demand, the medium-term outlook for gold remains favorable. Elevated geopolitical uncertainty and expectations of a more accommodative Federal Reserve policy could support further price increases in the coming months. When it comes to the politics of producing the world's most advanced semiconductors, discussions related to national security are frequently at the forefront. Such is the case with the Multilateral Alignment of Technology Controls on Hardware (MATCH) Act, a bipartisan bill that seeks to impose stricter export controls on the equipment used to manufacture cutting-edge chips. Such legislation would apply to the systems produced by leading chip equipment maker ASML (NASDAQ: ASML) . However, before making a move on this semiconductor sector stock , investors should keep in mind the specifics of the legislation and how it might affect the company and its revenue. Sophie Park Prediction markets surged Friday on expectations that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will leave his position as Fed governor following the Department of Justice’s decision to close its criminal investigation tied to the central bank. Odds on Kalshi now show a 91% chance Powell is out as Fed governor before 2027, with 86% odds he departs before August and 62% before June. The shift came after the DOJ ended its probe into cost overruns at the Fed’s headquarters renovation project. The matter will now be handled by the Federal Reserve’s inspector general rather than federal prosecutors. The investigation had created a significant obstacle for Kevin Warsh, who was nominated by U.S. President Donald Trump to lead the Fed. Senator Thom Tillis had previously said he would block Warsh’s confirmation until the Powell probe was dropped. With the legal largely overhang removed, markets are now pricing in a much smoother political pathway to replacing Powell. Earlier in the week, lawmakers scrutinized Warsh during his Fed chair nomination hearing over whether he would defend Fed independence amid White House pressure to cut interest rates. Powell's term as Fed chair ends May 15; his governor term ends Jan. 31, 2028, though he has not yet confirmed whether he will stay on the Board once his chairmanship ends. The Kalshi market resolves to "yes" if Powell has either officially announced his intention to leave as a Board member or has actually left.
