Morning, I’m Jacob Reid from Bloomberg UK’s breaking news team, bringing you up to speed on today’s top business stories. Some good news to end the week. UK retail sales jumped by 0.7% in March, according to the ONS, defying economists’ expectations that they would stagnate. That’s largely down to motor fuel sales, with people rushing to fill up as petrol and diesel prices surged due to the Middle East conflict. Even when you exclude fuel though, sales rose by 0.2%. More on that from my colleague Sam below. Admittedly, it’s not all positive. The ONS also revised February’s retail sales figure to a 0.6% decline, and consumers are increasingly wary amid the US-Iran conflict, according to GfK’s sentiment tracker.
