Denis_prof/iStock via Getty Images Following years of buy-rated recommendations, we moved Genuine Parts Company ( GPC ) to neutral in our last update. As noted in the title, our downgrade was not due to business performance; it was due to the planned split between the Automotive and Industrial businesses. This was due to Elliott’s involvement. Here at the Lab, we believe this was leading to uncertainty around capital allocation and execution. Additionally, the 2026 EPS guidance of $7.5–$8 fell short of our expectations, with a softer margin outlook across segments, supporting a more cautious stance. On aggregate, GPC was still trading at a high valuation, compounded by the risks tied to the separation. For this reason, we preferred a wait-and-see approach, and this proved correct, given a negative total return relative to the S&P 500 change (Fig. 1). Mare Ev. Lab Rating Update Fig. 1 Q1 Results and Our Neutral Stance Before commenting on the Q1 results, we should report that Q4 2025 was exceptionally noisy, with GAAP results distorted by non-recurring charges. The company's Q1 performance provided a much-needed dose of confidence, with results coming in ahead of expectations and showing a notable rebound. The most positive signal from Q1 was the performance of the North America Automotive segment. Pressure on margins reversed, with EBITDA margin expanding by 10 basis points. The Industrial segment once again delivered exceptional results. Comparable sales growth of +3.9% and a 90-basis-point expansion in EBITDA margin demonstrate strong operational execution and solid end-market demand. The International Automotive is still lagging. In the headline numbers, the segment reported top-line sales growth of +13.2%; however, this was entirely driven by a positive FX (+10.6%). The segment EBITDA margin contracted by -80 basis points. At the aggregate level, GPC top-line sales reached $6.3 billion, representing a 6.8% increase versus last year's results (Fig. 2). Net income...

Pressmaster/iStock via Getty Images Although it might seem morbid, I actually have a lot of interest in the death care space. There are a couple of reasons for this. First and foremost, digging into the industry was one of the most intriguing and knowledge-building exercises that I did while in college. My team and I ended up writing a 40-or-so-page analysis of the industry and the companies in it. But then, in addition to that, I like the industry because there will be guaranteed demand, and that demand is fairly easy to forecast. One of the players in the space that I have been bullish on is Carriage Services ( CSV ), an owner and operator of funeral homes and cemeteries. In my last article about it, published in November 2025, I called it a "Buy." And since then, things have gone quite well. As revenue, profits, and cash flows have all increased, the share price has jumped. It's currently up 8.5% since then, while the S&P 500 is down 1%. Even with this return disparity locked in, the stock looks attractively priced on both an absolute basis and relative to other similar firms. And with demographics certainly working in its favor, I believe that maintaining it as a solid "Buy" makes sense here. An evergreen opportunity CBO In my view, the death care space in the U nited States will almost always be a good industry for investors. For starters, everybody dies unless there is something I don't know about. But in addition to this, the U.S. population continues to grow, which will ultimately mean more deaths as time goes on. According to the Congressional Budget Office , for instance, the population of this nation should expand from 349 million this year to 364 million in 2056. And because fertility rates are declining, it's believed that by the year 2030, the rate of deaths in the U nited States will surpass the rate of births. If the U nited States is to avoid a declining population, we must become more open to immigration than we already have. However, even that wou...

canart7/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images In our last update, we were not lucky with the timing, given the escalation in the Middle East. That said, we report positively on Heineken N.V. ( HEINY )'s 2025 performance. In our view, Heineken’s 2026 outlook appeared appropriately conservative, and with the EverGreen 2030 strategy, we remained supportive of the equity story. Following a 12.3% decline since mid-February (Fig. 1), we see upside potential. Mare Evidence Lab Rating Update Fig 1 Q1 Results and Our Positive Take The company reported volume growth of plus +2.8% (Fig. 2), ahead of Wall Street's expectation of +2.3%. Resilient volumes and a favorable price MIX mainly supported this. In numbers, price MIX contributed +3%, backed by the Americas and APAC. From a GEO perspective (Fig. 3), APAC stood out for volume growth (+3.7%), driven by strong momentum in Vietnam and continued market share gains. India also sees favorable comps due to better weather. Africa and the Middle East also delivered growth, while the Americas underperformed, with volumes down 2.4%. This was due to softer trends in Mexico and Brazil, where pricing and a shorter Carnival season weighed on performance. Heineken Q1 Trading Update in a Snap Fig 2 Heineken GEO volume Fig 3 Why are we still positive? We reviewed Heineken’s latest annual report and found that exposure in the Middle East is very limited and not a core driver of the investment case. The “Middle East” component in reporting is bundled with key markets such as Nigeria, South Africa, and Ethiopia. On an indirect basis, developments in the Middle East can still affect the company through higher energy costs (for glass, logistics, and brewing inputs) and subdued global consumer sentiment. We saw little mention of the ongoing escalation, and with the guidance confirmation, we are confident. Going back to the business, Heineken's trading update provides a powerful confirmation that its "EverGreen 2030" strategy is delivering tangible re...

"Gone In 60 Seconds": Feds Uncover DC-Area International Car Theft Ring Authored by Jill McLaughlin via The Epoch Times, Federal authorities in the Washington area have uncovered an alleged international vehicle theft ring involving six people suspected of stealing cars and shipping them to Africa, where they are sold for top dollar. Six people were charged on April 22 in connection with their roles in the alleged scheme. A 15-count federal indictment was unsealed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, charging the defendants with conspiracy to steal at least 20 vehicles in the Washington metropolitan area and Pennsylvania. The cars are transported over state lines and sold to buyers in the United States and the African nation of Ghana, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington. The indictment follows a year-long investigation into an alleged auto-theft ring in the District of Columbia area that involved vehicles stolen using electronic devices that allowed thieves to reprogram cars to accept blank key fobs, prosecutors said. “They don’t need keys, and they don’t need hot wiring—no smashed windows, no drama—just a sleek electronic device called an ‘Autel’ and under a minute the car’s brain is rewritten,” U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said during a press conference on April 22. “The car is gone in 60 seconds.” An Autel device can be used to erase a vehicle’s records and reprogram its keys. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the case, Pirro said. The auto theft ring could involve more than 100 vehicles in the District of Columbia and more than 30 vehicles in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Police officers working on the case executed a search warrant on April 21 at an automobile storage facility in Decatur, Georgia, locating several of the missing vehicles, prosecutors said. The suspects are Jacob Hernandez, 29, of Los Angeles; Dustin Wetzel, 23, of Woodbridge, Virginia; James Young, 23, of Hyattsville, Maryland; Khobe David, 24, of...

alxpin/iStock via Getty Images The U.S. Air Force is planning a sharp increase in purchases of Lockheed Martin Corp.’s long-range stealth cruise missiles over the next five years, according to newly released budget documents, following the weapon’s recent use in strikes on Iranian targets. The proposed procurement calls for nearly 4,300 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles, known as JASSMs, through fiscal 2031. Defense planners view the missile as an important asset for any future military confrontation involving China. For the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, the Air Force is seeking to buy 821 missiles, compared with 144 in the current year. Planned annual orders would climb to almost 900 in fiscal 2028, followed by about 860 missiles in each of the subsequent years. If fully funded, the purchases would expand the U.S. inventory to more than 11,000 missiles by 2031, up from roughly 6,700 acquired before 2025. The request comes as part of the Trump administration’s proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget, a 42% increase from the current year. The proposal is widely viewed as an opening bid, with Congress holding final authority over spending levels. Lawmakers from both parties have already signaled skepticism toward such a large increase in military outlays. The figures released Wednesday don't include replacements for weapons used during the recent Iran conflict because the budget was completed before hostilities began. Those replenishment costs are expected to be included in a separate supplemental defense package. The missile’s performance in the U.S. and Israeli campaign against Iran underscored its strategic value, with the Pentagon reportedly transferring some JASSM stocks from Pacific-based inventories last month. The extended-range version of the weapon has a range of more than 600 miles and is designed to penetrate enemy air defenses while allowing aircraft to strike from safer stand-off distances. It can be carried by B-1B, B-52 and B-2 bombers, as well as F...

The Nasdaq Composite index has jumped 102% over the past three years, outpacing the 72% gains of the S&P 500 over the same period. The simple reason why the tech-focused index has outperformed the broad-market benchmark is that tech companies have delivered superior earnings growth, primarily fueled by the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Of course, the Nasdaq Composite has been under stress at certain times over the past three years, mainly due to factors that are outside the control of companies, such as President Donald Trump's tariffs and the conflict in the Middle East. However, the strong earnings growth exhibited by AI stocks has ultimately been a tailwind for the index, which is around 24,400 as of this writing. The good news for investors is that the tech sector's robust earnings growth looks to be here to stay. Last week, wealth management firm LPL Financial points out reported that earnings estimates for the tech sector had increased by more than 6% since the beginning of the Iran war. Analysts are expecting to see that tech earnings spiked by 44% in the first quarter of 2026. Continue reading
