Safran SA expects to hit the top end of its guidance range for this year after first-quarter sales surpassed expectations, buoyed by a strong civil engines market. “The beginning of 2026 saw an extremely strong pace in civil engine activities, with LEAP engine deliveries surging by more than 60%,” Chief Executive Officer Olivier Andries said in a Thursday statement, referring to the engines that power both Airbus SE and Boeing Co. aircraft. Demand for spare parts and services from civil customers also surged, he said. The engine manufacturer — which supplies both commercial and military aviation markets — saw organic revenue growth of 23% in the first quarter, ahead of expectations of 15% growth. It now expects to reach the higher end of its guidance range for recurring operating income between €6.1 billion ($7.1 billion) and €6.2 billion. The aerospace company lifted its 2028 earnings targets earlier this year, citing the strength of its civil engines aftermarket and defense segments, which it said would help counter the impact from US tariffs and a corporate surtax extension. Safran flagged a negative currency hit of €614 million for the first quarter, and said it was monitoring the impact of supply chain capabilities and the conflict in the Middle East on its outlook.

An asset-management fund in the Equilor group of companies part-owned by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ’s son-in-law profited from financial-market bets on the strongman losing power. Equilor Asset Management said it had amassed a “significant overweight” stance in government bonds and, right before Hungary ’s election on April 12, in local stocks. The wagers paid off as the opposition Tisza party’s landslide victory extended a rally in the country’s assets. While the ownership structure of the fund-management boutique is opaque, it operates from the same office as Equilor Investment Ltd. , a broker controlled by Istvan Tiborcz , the husband of Orban’s oldest daughter. The firms also promote themselves as one group to clients. “We were inclined to expect that Tisza would be the clear winner and positioned ourselves accordingly,” Attila Szabo , the chief investment officer of Equilor AM, said in a post-election interview at his office. Equilor AM’s bet on Orban’s exit signals that even insiders were preparing for the defeat. Hungarian markets have surged on Tisza’s plans to mend ties with the European Union and steer the country toward adopting the euro, with Budapest’s BUX equity index jumping to a record and yields on 10-year bonds dropping to the lowest levels since 2024. The spokesman for the Equilor-branded enterprises confirmed that some of the same people oversee the brokerage and the asset management firm. Balint Szecsenyi, the broker’s chief executive officer, sits on the supervisory board of the asset manager and is a key stakeholder throughout the group, the spokesman said, adding that the firms had different ownership models. Equilor Investment, the brokerage, is majority owned by Budapest-listed Granit Bank Nyrt. , which in turn is part of the BDPST Group , a holding company owned by Tiborcz. BDPST’s headquarters are also located in the same office building as the Equilor businesses. The 39-year-old husband of Orban’s daughter Rahel, Tiborcz rose...

Art festivals can fill abandoned buildings with new life – or clear a path for property developers. Coimbra’s Anozero is trying out a more confrontational approach If you decide to spend a night at Coimbra’s Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova in the near future, do bear in mind that the place is almost certainly haunted. Disembodied children’s voices echo around the first floor of the 17th century convent perched atop a hill in the Portuguese university city, overlooking the medieval centre from across the Mondego river. In the garages, dry foliage has been arranged in geometric shapes, as if in preparation for a wicca ritual. You need the nerves of a ghost-hunter to walk through the pitch-black ground-floor corridor of the dormitory wing, lit only by a neon strip at either end, where tortured wails ambush you from the monkish cells. Sung in Albanian, Chinese, Kurdish, Kyrgyz and Turkish, these laments are part of an installation by US artist Taryn Simon, but they feel like spectral reminders of the nuns who lived in these quarters for two centuries.
