Of all the things I could possibly have imagined the US would take an interest in to the point of executing a straight-to-series commission, Doc Martin would not have been one of them. And yet here we are: Dominic Minghella’s creation, starring Martin Clunes as a crotchety GP in the fictional sleepy Cornish village Portwenn, which ran for 10 series on ITV between 2004 and 2022, has been tweaked for a new market and relabelled Best Medicine because it never really worked as a pun on Dr Martens anyway. Like 99% of puns, actually, but that’s probably a discussion for another time. Clunes is now Josh Charles. The character’s name is Dr Martin Best instead of Ellingham, otherwise the new title wouldn’t work, and he went to Harvard medical school instead of Imperial College London. But he is still cantankerous – by medical teatime drama standards, which is to say that he barely approaches normal human levels of irritability. And he is still a vascular surgeon who developed a fear of blood, had to abandon surgery and decided instead to inflict his lack of bedside manner on the good people of Port Wenn, now two words and in Maine, where he used to stay in the summer as a child. Those are two things that you don't want to have to report as a major pizza chain operator, and yet, that is precisely what Papa John's International, Inc. ( PZZA ) had to do. In my view, the company is facing some serious structural issues that leave the stock vulnerable and overpriced. I want to share with you what I found on this company and why I am ultimately so bearish on it. Papa John's Is Attempting A Turnaround That Simply Isn't Happening I wish that I could tell you that Papa John's has found a way to steer the ship in the right direction, but I simply don't think that this is the case. This iconic pizza chain has been struggling mightily over the last several years, as evidenced by its share price decline: Data by YCharts While the pandemic bolstered the stock for a time, it has since fallen and become viewed as a struggling enterprise. Unfortunately, these struggles appear to be an ongoing issue based on what I saw in the company's Q1 2026 earnings report . Papa John's Reports Disappointing Q1 Results, Adding Fuel To The Fire I don't think there is any other way to say it: the Q1 2026 report for Papa John's was disappointing. To start, the company reported $478.61M in Q1 revenue, a 7.66% decline and $6.91M below analysts' expectations. Not only that, but the EPS number wasn't any better. On that count, the company reported $0.32 EPS, a $0.05 miss compared with expectations, and down compared with the $0.36 EPS reported the year before: Papa John's Q1 2026 Earnings Presentation Both of these figures were tough for investors, but the deeper that I dug into the report, the worse it started to look. I found 3 major reasons why I don't think the turnaround is happening at Papa John's. 1) North American Comparable Sales Slump The company reported that North American comparable sales declined by 6.4% in Q1 compared to the year prior. Spencer Platt/Getty Images News Robinhood Markets ( HOOD ) has drawn attention after CEO and Co-Founder Vlad Tenev said via X that, “Robinhood Securities is now approved to serve as an underwriter.” This move could be meaningful for the stock as it expands the company's role from a trading platform to IPO underwriting, potentially unlocking higher-fee revenue streams and strengthening its position in capital markets. Since IPO Access launched in 2021, retail participation in IPOs has shifted from an afterthought to a core allocation strategy, moving the debate from “why allocate to retail at all” to “how big can the allocation be.” Tenev added that becoming an underwriter, not just a selling group member, is a natural step to better serve customers and issuers, with the company aiming to be disruptive in the space. Recently, the company also removed its PDT restrictions, eliminating the $25K minimum and pattern day trading flags, widening access for retail traders.
