adventtr/iStock via Getty Images By Rafael Silva In September of last year, following the release of the World Robotics Report by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), a panel discussed the feasibility of humanoids entering homes in the not-too-distant future. The consensus at the time was that the current generation of humanoid robots was neither safe, dexterous, nor cheap enough to be useful within a household. During that discussion, a concept emerged that is now playing out across the industry in real time. An ultimate, all-purpose humanoid that can seamlessly transition from welding car frames to folding laundry would no doubt be revolutionary. But something more logical is becoming apparent as we move deeper into the current robotics supercycle. There will likely be different humanoids for different tasks. After all, we’re leaving behind the days when developing a single robot would take enormous resources. Why should one robot be able to do everything? The recent contrast between Boston Dynamics’ Atlas and Fauna Robotics’ (recently acquired by Amazon) Sprout hints at what the future may look like. In that future, humanoids won’t be defined by a single form factor. Instead, they will be defined by specialized platforms built for specific tasks. After all, no one expects their washing machine to also mow the lawn. The Purpose-Built Factory Worker: Atlas On the industrial side, we have Boston Dynamics' Atlas. Speaking after its launch , the design and engineering team were keen to explain that the latest Atlas is “a departure from the typical humanoid look, favoring industrial utility over human likeness.” With custom actuators two to three times stronger than off-the-shelf options, passive heat distribution to eliminate failure-prone fans in the limbs, and a 110-pound instant payload capacity, Atlas is built strictly for the factory floor. It looks like a machine because it has to act and work like one. Atlas Prioritizes Industrial Utility Over Human ...

Roblox Settles With 3 States Over Endangering Children, Will Pay $36 Million Authored by Naveen Athrappully via The Epoch Times, Online interactive gaming platform Roblox has agreed to settle with West Virginia, Alabama, and Nevada for a combined $35.78 million, committing to strengthen children’s safety through measures such as mandatory age verification and chat restrictions. Roblox reached an $11.08 million settlement with West Virginia. In an April 21 statement, the office of West Virginia Attorney General John B. McCuskey said that Roblox has agreed to “major child safety overhaul.” The settlement came after an investigation conducted by the office found that the platform exposed child users to sexual predators, sexual and violent content, and grooming risks. McCuskey said there were “serious failures that left children exposed to real danger.” Under the agreement, Roblox will verify the ages of all users before allowing chat access. This is expected to limit instances of adults contacting minors and reduce the risk of grooming. The company will block all chat until users verify their age, seeking to reduce the use of anonymous accounts by predators to target children. Once age verification is complete, adults can contact under-16 users only through verified trusted friends, according to the statement. The accounts of all under-16 users will, by default, run on safe content mode, which will reportedly block out adult-rated material. Roblox has also committed to recruiting an internet safety specialist in West Virginia. The settlement funds will be paid over several years. “I have two young daughters who love Roblox, so I know how popular it is,” McCuskey said. “I am thankful that Roblox took our concerns seriously and worked with us to make these major safety changes.” Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced in an April 21 statement that the state has reached a $12.2 million settlement with Roblox. Under the deal, Roblox has agreed to verify the age o...

The company posted non-GAAP earnings of $0.40 per share on revenue of $279.98 million, up 27.1% from a year earlier. Calix forecast second-quarter revenue with a midpoint of about $290 million, above consensus, and raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth outlook to 15% to 20% from a prior 10% to 15% range, citing strong demand and the rollout of memory surcharges. However, the company flagged margin pressure from rising memory costs. It said gross margins are expected to come in at 54.25% to 57.25% in the current quarter, with full-year margins seen declining by 50 to 150 basis points, as surcharges aimed at offsetting higher costs are expected to weigh on profitability. Say what you like about Leicester City’s dismal performances but just don’t say it to Harry Winks when he’s boarding the team coach outside Fratton Park shortly after they’ve lost their 18th Championship match of the season. Last Saturday, the midfielder told travelling fans to “[Eff] off!” ahead of the return leg of their 328-mile round trip to watch their side lose to Portsmouth. Unsurprisingly, Winks was not asked to reprise his role as the club’s public liaison officer after their relegation to League One was confirmed by Tuesday’s home draw with Hull City. It was left to local lad Hamza Choudhury to take on the role of human shield outside the King Power Stadium as his teammates sheepishly slunk away to their cars and made good their escape from the angry mob.
