Chokehold on shipping route draws Houthis in Yemen back into conflict as commenters see ‘no turning back’ Middle East crisis – live updates Iran’s reversion to large-scale military exchanges with Israel broadened the conflict that began in February not only by making the Israeli attacks on Hezbollah a direct casus belli for Iran for the first time, but also by drawing the Houthis in Yemen back into the conflict with as yet incalculable consequences. Some in Tehran, buoyed up by past perceived military success and emboldened by the chokehold of the strait of Hormuz, would like to turn this moment into the point of no return in the conflagration with Israel. A minority would welcome the abandonment of ceasefire talks with the US, an outcome for which they have been agitating for weeks. Continue reading...

Apparel company Kontoor Brands' portfolio is at an "inflection point," according to JPMorgan. The bank initiated coverage of the stock at an overweight rating on Monday. It also placed a $90 price target on shares, indicating a more than 28% gain from Friday's close. Analyst Matthew Boss said the company's narrow focus of brands — Wrangler, which produces jeans, and Helly Hansen, an outdoor apparel manufacturer — creates an opportunity for the company to accelerate growth. "We see revenue growth upside opportunity for Wrangler to improve to +low-to-mid-single- digit(+) growth (vs. our model at low-singles) & Helly to low-double- digits(+) growth (vs. our model at high singles) with narrowed management focus on the two brands," Boss wrote in the note. KTB 1Y mountain Kontoor Brands 1-year. Kontoor's portfolio narrowed after it agreed to sell its other denim brand Lee to Authentic Brands Group for $1 billion. Shares of Kontoor are off more than 20% since a January 2025 high. JPMorgan's price target would put the stock nearly back at that level, but Boss sees upside to his forecasts. "We see fundamental upside to our 'E,'" referring to earnings, "(notably with our prudent revenue growth forecasts), and upside to our multiple at 8.5x relative to the most recent precedent transaction (Lee sold to [Authentic Brands Group] at 10x [trailing 12-month] EBITDA announced on 5/21), which would support an upside equity value of $108," Boss wrote.

At the other end of the spectrum, communication services struggled the most so far. On the geopolitical front, President Donald Trump said Israel and Iran were seeking an immediate ceasefire as negotiations toward a broader peace agreement continued, while urging both sides to halt hostilities following a new flare-up between the two countries. Treasury yields remained in focus as the U.S. 2 Year Treasury yield ( US2Y ) topped a new 52-week high . The US2Y was down 1 basis point to 4.14%. At the same time, the U.S. 10 Year Treasury yield ( US10Y ) remained mostly unchanged at 4.52%, and the U.S. 30 Year Treasury yield ( US30Y ) inched up 1 basis point to 5.01%. “A pause in the stock market's 9-week positive run off of the March lows is entirely understandable. We believe Friday's pullback was a healthy reset for stocks and is not the start of something more worrisome, especially since fundamentals continue to strengthen from better-than-expected earnings and economic data,” Carol Schleif, chief market strategist of BMO Wealth Management, stated. As for stocks that were on the move, shares of Intel ( INTC ) advanced by 7.8%, while shares of GoDaddy ( GDDY ) fell 4.6%. Intel ( INTC ) led chip and AI-related stocks higher on Monday following a report that Google ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ) and Nvidia ( NVDA ) are considering the company as a backup chip manufacturer. Chip stocks rebounded on Monday after plummeting on Friday. Shares of Intel surged about 8%. Alphabet's unit Google has ordered more than 3M Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, from Intel, The Information reported . The order would be manufactured in 2028. The report noted that several major AI chip design companies, also including Nvidia, are turning to Intel as a backup manufacturer for their most advanced processors. Nvidia has not yet placed an order with Intel. The company is testing if Intel technology can be used to make a forthcoming processor that combines four graphics chips into a single unit, the report added. Intel declined to comment in an email to Seeking Alpha. Nvidia and Google did not immediately respond to Seeking Alpha's request for comment. Meanwhile, GF Securities highlighted a big lift in Intel's foundry capacity. The analysts said that contrary to earlier conservatism, they believe the company has turned aggressive in capacity expansion and estimate its Intel 3 capacity to be +80% (mainly in Ireland fab from end-2026 to end-2028), 18A to be +100% (in Arizona from end-2026 to end-2028), and 14A to start strong (in Oregon). The analysts expect this to be driven by robust server CPU demand, improving 18A yields, likely reaching about 80%, and Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge, or EMIB, yields of 90% to 95% in recent weeks (versus 90% in April). It is also driven by a strong external customer pipeline by securing major U.S. fabless with one key smartphone maker to start 18A-P for tablet/PCs and committing 14A capacity and the Terafab project on 14A in late 2028. In all, the analysts expect Intel Foundry Services, or IFS, to turn profitable in the second half of 2027. Shares of AI chipmaker Nvidia ( NVDA ) rose about 3%. Nvidia's Founder and CEO Jensen Hua...

It's an election year, and that means politicians are putting in extra work to pander to special interest groups they think will help them cross the finish line. If you're looking to be elected in Michigan, there aren't many interests more special than the automotive industry, and a good way to get the industry on your side is by going after the thing it fears the most : China. Now, if a pair of lawmakers get their way, Chinese-badged vehicles wouldn't just be restricted from sale or import in the US, they'd also be banned from entering the country, even for a simple day trip from Canada or Mexico. Moves to protect the US auto industry are nothing new, and they're popular across party lines. Former President Biden added an additional 100 percent import tariff on all Chinese-made cars during his term and then had the Department of Commerce draw up new rules —later implemented by the Trump administration—that banned the import of connected cars manufactured by companies owned by or with links to the Chinese government, starting in 2027. Investors should get pickier with Brazil stocks as economic growth is set to cool and the nation heads toward a polarized presidential vote, says XP Inc. The firm, one of Brazil’s largest brokerage firms, is targeting utilities with predictable cash flows and financial stocks, according to Raphael Figueredo , a senior equity strategist at the firm. It also favors homebuilders including Cury Construtora e Incorporadora SA and Direcional Engenharia SA, which benefit from government-backed housing programs for lower-income families. “Having exposure to equities remains important. But this isn’t a call to buy the Ibovespa broadly,” said Figueiredo. “We need to be selective.” That approach became increasingly important after Brazil’s benchmark equity index posted an eighth consecutive week of losses, its longest losing streak since at least 1989. XP also sees opportunities in companies with the ability to sustain dividend payments even as borrowing costs remain elevated. One of XP’s highest-conviction calls is that Brazil’s economy is poised to slow sharply next year as the drivers of recent growth begin to fade. Gross domestic product is expected to expand about 1.2% next year, down from 2% this year, as high interest rates and fading fiscal stimulus weigh on activity. Whether that slowdown creates room for interest-rate cuts will depend on the fiscal signals sent by the administration that takes office after the election. “That process could be more intense if it is not carried out in an orderly manner, alongside a fiscal adjustment, which would create room for the central bank to cut interest rates,” said Caio Megale , chief economist at XP, which had 1.5 trillion reais ($292 billion) in assets under custody at the end of March. If the slowdown is disorderly, without clear fiscal signals, “we could see currency depreciation and more persistent inflation,” he added.
