The Swiss government will water down some of the changes it had planned to regulations affecting UBS Group AG , while sticking to broader demands in legislation for increased capital at the nation’s largest bank. Officials will allow UBS to continue counting deferred tax assets toward its regulatory capital and to write down software from that metric over a period of three years from 2029, the government said on Wednesday. The measures are contained in an executive order that is set to come into force from next year. The bigger-than-expected concessions set the scene for a legislative package due to go before the Swiss parliament later this year, which deals with the capital backing of UBS’s foreign units. While Switzerland is seeking to boost financial buffers against future crises like the one that sank Credit Suisse in 2023, UBS has fought back hard, arguing that its global competitiveness will be hurt. The proposed legislation, driven by Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter , requires that UBS back its foreign units with 100% capital at the parent bank, which so far has been the most controversial element for the lender. The change addresses a perceived weakness contributing to Credit Suisse’s demise, in which troubled foreign units couldn’t be sold without severely damaging the solvency of the parent bank. This part of the reform would foresee a rise in the capital requirements of UBS’s domestic parent bank of around $19 billion, according to the latest government estimate. The results raise a warning flag for the consumer sector at a time when a return to pre-war energy costs appears unlikely in the near term. On its face, the 1.7% increase in retail spending last month looks encouraging, marking a sharp acceleration from February’s 0.7% gain. Soaring gas prices were part of the mix, although the gains were broad‑based. “It’s a blowout retail sales figure for March,” wrote Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, in a report. “Stripping out the big surge in spending on gas due to the Middle East conflict, it’s a solid but more modest 0.6% increase.” Monthly comparisons can be misleading due to short‑term noise, so it’s useful to monitor the year‑over‑year trend. Wall Street expects the Finnish company to post EPS of $0.05 on revenue of $5.38 billion, implying a rise of nearly 23% during the quarter. After selling its legendary mobile phone business more than a decade ago, the company is now betting on growing demand for AI and data centers to play a key role in its diversification strategy. Last year, it even appointed Intel’s Justin Hotard as CEO to intensify this AI push. The stock traded slightly lower following the release of its Q1 results , but shares are still up nearly 20% YTD, about 30% over the past year, and at the very top-end of its 52-week range. In my last two pieces published in October 2023 and January 2025, I rated shares as a Buy and highlighted the REIT’s strong portfolio metrics and forward outlook as two big catalysts for upside. In valuing the stock, I mentioned that investors could see at least 20% upside potential in the stock. And that would have excluded the 6% annualized dividend at the time. Since my last update, shares have returned a total of 62%. This trumps the broader S&P 500’s ( SPY ) gain over the same period.
