Given the developments in the Middle East — with the situation is changing every day — “even though there’s still a week to go, it would actually be too early to say what decision will be made there,” he told reporters in Vienna on Wednesday. “We have a clear policy of deciding on a meeting-by-meeting basis,” he said. “That means there will be a decision next week, based on the data available by the middle of next week.” ECB Shouldn’t Increase Interest Rates in April, Simkus Says Guindos Says ECB Needs to Be Prudent, Keep a Cool Head on Rates ECB’s Pereira Says Economic Damage of Iran War Has Yet to Show

RobsonPL Philip Morris International ( PM ) fell slightly in early trading after the tobacco giant issued its Q1 earnings report. Revenue increased by 2.7% organically, mainly reflecting a favorable pricing variance driven by international combustibles. Those positive factors were partly offset by unfavorable volume/mix, mainly driven by lower international combustibles and U.S. volume. Both the smoke-free (up by 12.4%, 5.3% organically) and combustibles (up by 6.7%, 0.9% organically) businesses made meaningful contributions during the quarter. Total shipment volume was down 1.9%, driven lower by a 5.1% decline in the cigarette business and a 16.1% drop in the oral SFP business. Notably, PM's smoke-free business accounted for 43% of total net revenue in the quarter. The company's smoke-free products are now available in 108 markets. Adjusted operating income increased by 0.9% on an organic basis. Non-GAAP EPS of $1.96 beat the consensus estimate of $1.83 and last year's mark of $1.69. "Our performance exceeded our expectations in the first quarter, with an outstanding delivery from IQOS driving very good growth for the group against a strong prior-year comparison," highlighted CEO Jacek Olczak. "Building on excellent broad-based momentum in the international smoke-free business and 16% adjusted diluted EPS growth in Q1, we are well positioned to continue delivering best-in-class performance in 2026," he added. Looking ahead, the tobacco giant sees full-year adjusted EPS of $8.36 to $8.51 (midpoint $8.435) vs. a prior expectation of $8.38 to $8.53 and the consensus estimate of $8.38. Full-year organic revenue growth of +5% to +7% is anticipated. Shares of Philip Morris International ( PM ) fell 0.2% in premarket trading to $153.00. Altria ( MO ) and British American Tobacco ( BTI ) both showed minor gains in the early session. Robert Half ( RHI ) is a professional staffing company specializing in temporary placements in the fields of finance and accounting, technology, and administrative and customer support. Robert Half also operates Protiviti, which provides consulting in a variety of fields, including risk management and internal audit. The U.S. staffing industry has experienced three consecutive years of muted activity following a period of unusually strong labor demand after the pandemic, when U.S. unemployment fell to multi-decade lows. As companies have been digesting excessive prior hiring of permanent employees, the use of temporary labor has suffered a significant cyclical downturn, leaving temporary workers at a historically low share of the overall workforce. Beyond cyclical pressures, current investor concerns center on the potential for artificial intelligence to reduce demand for certain roles and automate aspects of the recruiting process. An alternative view holds that disciplines such as tax and audit require considerable professional judgment and risk assessment that extend beyond historical data and rules-based implementation, sustaining the need for human expertise. Further, proprietary information relating to individual temp employee performance in various roles, which has been accumulated by the likes of Robert Half over decades, may prove to be a valuable asset to employers in a world in which AI renders it difficult to discern fact from fiction. Additionally, although barriers to entry in staffing may seem low, Robert Half benefits from an extensive two-sided professional network, long-running proprietary candidate data and expertise in matching specific skill sets to defined client needs. Furthermore, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis data through March 2026 refute the notion that artificial intelligence has been playing a role in dec...
