artisteer/iStock via Getty Images Corporate credit markets are behaving more like a safe haven than a risk asset, holding steady despite renewed tensions in the Middle East, higher inflation readings and volatility across equity and government bond markets, according to Société Générale. Strategist Juan Esteban Valencia said in a report that investment-grade and high-yield credit spreads have remained confined to narrow ranges even as investors grapple with uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire in the Middle East, inflation pressures and disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz. The resilience contrasts with the choppier performance seen in stocks and sovereign debt. While government bond yields have remained volatile amid shifting oil prices and inflation concerns, corporate credit spreads have largely tightened or remained stable, supported by healthy corporate balance sheets and strong investor demand for income-producing assets. Why it matters for investors The report suggests investors continue to view corporate credit as one of the more attractive places to deploy capital despite geopolitical risks. Persistent demand for yield, solid corporate fundamentals and limited new supply have helped keep spreads near their tightest levels of the year. However, Société Générale warned that an economic recession remains the primary threat to the asset class. The bank estimates a recession could widen credit spreads by roughly 150 basis points from current levels, significantly reducing bond prices and total returns. Valencia said recession risks remain relatively low, though weak recent French GDP data and sluggish growth in Germany warrant close monitoring. Société Générale expects credit spreads to remain largely rangebound in the near term unless there is a significant escalation or breakthrough in Middle East negotiations. The bank also expects investors to focus on inflation data and upcoming central bank decisions, including a closely watched European Central Ban...

The team were on a poor run of form, with umpteen players looking jaded. What happened next proved grisly. While the level of Curaçao and Bolivia – plus the motivational levels of the latter – must be acknowledged, a Scottish side notching eight goals in back-to-back friendlies has altered grey areas for Steve Clarke. Scotland’s picture before Saturday’s World Cup opener against Haiti is now a clearer one. This time, they look far from jaded. Continue reading...
