A US congressional committee has cast doubt on Donald Trump’s “Golden Fleet” programme, warning it could overwhelm already strained nuclear-powered shipbuilding capacity and calling for a detailed review of its centrepiece battleship. One lawmaker also warned of the vulnerability of battleships in modern maritime warfare, citing the capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army’s Dongfeng missile series, which includes the DF-21D ballistic missile – widely dubbed a “carrier killer”. Heather Diehl/Getty Images News United Airlines ( UAL ) Chief Executive Scott Kirby publicly criticized Rolls-Royce ( RYCEF )( RYCEY ) on Sunday, accusing the engine maker of failing to support the carrier as the two companies remain at odds over a major aircraft agreement, Bloomberg News reported Sunday. Speaking at the International Air Transport Association's annual meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Kirby contrasted Rolls-Royce with rival engine manufacturers. “GE is the best, I think Pratt & Whitney is working hard, so I appreciate their attitude and what they’re doing, and my sentiment is that Rolls doesn’t care,” Kirby said. Kirby argued that Rolls-Royce benefits from its exclusive position as the sole engine supplier for Airbus's ( EADSF ) ( EADSY ) A350-1000 widebody jet. “Because they have a monopoly position on the A350-1000,” Kirby said, Rolls-Royce continues to win orders despite the dispute. The unusually public criticism comes after United ( UAL ) walked away from an earlier order for 45 Airbus A350 aircraft. Kirby said the decision stemmed from Rolls-Royce's failure to meet contractual commitments, adding that if the manufacturer wants to repair the relationship it must “start by honoring the contract.” For investors, the dispute underscores the leverage engine manufacturers can wield in the commercial aerospace market, where limited supplier options often leave airlines with little bargaining power. The clash also highlights ongoing tensions in the aircraft supply chain at a time when airlines are expanding fleets and manufacturers are working through production and delivery constraints. Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic offered a different view last week, saying, “we met all our contractual obligations, and I would like to find a way to work with United.” In response to Kirby's remarks, a Rolls-Royce spokesman said that “every customer is important” and that the company looks forward “to strengthening our strategic partnership” with United. Kirby also said...

Quant rankings for the upcoming earnings calendar show strength concentrated in consumer staples and consumer discretionary segments, while weakness is more pronounced across consumer-facing and select energy names. A total of 66 companies are scheduled to report in the coming week. This week’s top-rated names are led by United Natural Foods ( UNFI ) and Designer Brands ( DBI ), alongside Graham Corporation ( GHM ) and Stitch Fix ( SFIX ), pointing to strength across food distribution, apparel retail, industrial machinery, and discretionary segments. Consumer-facing companies feature prominently, with apparel retail names continuing to appear among the highest-rated stocks, reflecting selective momentum in discretionary spending. Industrials exposure through Graham Corporation and energy-linked FuelCell Energy ( FCEL ) also signal pockets of strength across machinery and electrical components, while information technology name Oracle ( ORCL ) highlights steady positioning in software. On the downside, consumer discretionary stocks dominate the weakest-ranked group, with BARK ( BARK ), Lakeland Industries ( LAKE ), and J.Jill ( JILL ) among the laggards, signaling pressure across retail and apparel segments. Energy name MIND Technology ( MIND ) leads the list, pointing to continued weakness in oilfield services, while VinFast Auto ( VFS ) reflects softness in automobile manufacturers. Additional pressure is seen across consumer staples through Limoneira ( LMNR ) and Mission Produce ( AVO ), alongside apparel retailer Lands’ End ( LE ). Health care and industrial names, including Aethlon Medical ( AEMD ) and Skillsoft ( SKIL ), round out the list, indicating broader weakness across select equipment and services segments. Other companies set to report earnings this week include Adobe ( ADBE ), Aurora Cannabis ( ACB ), and Chewy ( CHWY ), which carry Hold ratings with quant scores of 3.11 , 2.77 , and 2.84 , respectively. Halfpoint Images | Moment | Getty Images For women , living longer than men on average comes with a financial risk that experts say is worth preparing for — outliving their spouses and needing long-term care services. About 57% of Americans who reach age 65 will develop a disability serious enough to require long-term care, according to a 2022 report from the Health and Human Services Department. Roughly 1 in 4 women — 26% — will need such care for longer than five years, compared with 17.5% of men. The average duration of care for women is 3.6 years, compared with 2.5 years for men. "Women aren't just more likely to need care. They're more likely to need care last," said certified financial planner Laura Mattia, senior vice president and financial advisor with Wealth Enhancement's Atlas Team in Sarasota, Florida. More from Women and Wealth: Women tend to be 'risk-appropriate' investors, expert says: How that helps 35% of Gen Z homebuyers are single women. What to expect "In many cases, a couple's assets are first used to cover the husband's care, and then the woman enters the highest-risk stage of her life with fewer resources and no partner to share the burden," Mattia said. 'There's not a one-size-fits-all answer' Long-term care is generally defined as assistance with daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, eating or other things that the person can no longer do on their own. It can be provided in an institutional setting, such as a nursing home or assisted living facility, or in the person's home. Women, on average, live longer than men. mustafaU/iStock via Getty Images Monetary disorder evolved to become deeply systemic. It was on full display this week, especially Friday. The mania and the frog in the pot syndrome. Instability has been percolating (fragilities building) for so long that we’re numb to it all. In the markets, it’s more than comfortably - it has become exuberantly, manically numb. This is an acutely precarious market backdrop. As we’ve witnessed repeatedly, fledgling “risk-off” market pullbacks foreshadow abrupt market reversals, short squeezes, the unwind of bearish hedges, “buy the dip,” FOMO, liquidity overabundance, and intensifying market melt-ups. Market dynamics have dramatically favored risk-taking and speculative leveraging. For a while, disregarding risk has been systematically rewarded. All that said, we’ve quickly returned to an environment where risk should be taken seriously. Some of the same dynamics that fueled a historic market speculative blowoff could now trigger downside market instability, illiquidity, panic, and dislocation. In recent years, I’ve increasingly drawn parallels between the current Bubble backdrop and the “Roaring Twenties.” It’s worth noting that the 1929 crash lacked a clear catalyst. The fateful final bout of blowoff excess reversed abruptly, completely blindsiding everyone. Before delving into the markets and my thinking of why this could be a critical market juncture, I have to respect exceptionally loose financial conditions. While the VIX Index popped a notable six points Friday (and for the week) to the highest close in two months (21.51), and high yield CDS rose seven (12 on the week) to 312 bps, there is little in my universe of financial conditions indicators that suggests imminent trouble. High yield CDS closed Friday at an only two-week high. The MOVE (bond volatility) Index gained five to a two-week high 75. While up eight bps from Tuesday’s three-month low, junk bond spreads (to Treasuries) also closed at only two-week wide levels. In...

Sundry Photography/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Broadcom suffers a massive reversal It was a frustrating week for Broadcom ( AVGO ) investors as the semiconductor behemoth suffered a significant downside last week. So much so that it nearly collapsed the breakout that it attempted since April. It wasn't a coincidence that it happened also while the market suffered a bloodbath. Guess investors are now increasingly concerned whether the AI-led advance that has been so voracious since April could now finally come to a standstill. For Broadcom, I believe that concerns about it reversing into a downtrend appear to be premature. Yet the fact that it has underperformed its semiconductor peers lately has also not been lost among investors watching this momentum play out closely. Back in my previous update, I enunciated how Broadcom has made a clear case for gaining further share against Nvidia through its custom XPUs. While it presented a very solid $100 billion roadmap in AI revenue through 2027, it does seem like the market wants a lot more this time, but that has not kind of played out as management didn't upgrade its guidance. AVGO has been underperforming semiconductor peers AVGO/SMH price chart (weekly, medium term) (TradingView) As a quick reference, I believe you should be able to observe that AVGO remains in a long-term uptrend against the broad semiconductor index ( SMH ). So to think about Broadcom underperforming is somewhat of an anomaly that really only gained traction from late last year. But we are now also at a point where the long-term moving average, which is the 200-week moving average or the purple line in my chart, indicates that we could be at a momentous bottoming opportunity. Investors are asking for more from Broadcom Broadcom Q2 FY 2026 earnings conference (Seeking Alpha) And this comes at a crucial moment for the AI trade, as Broadcom guided (to the chagrin of investors) in the most recent earnings conference for its second fiscal quarter. A Banco BPM SpA bank branch in Milan, Italy, on Nov. 15, 2024. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Italy's Banco BPM said on Sunday it would invite Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena to discuss a potential tie-up that would create the country's second-biggest banking group, overtaking UniCredit. The long-mooted deal, which UniCredit has sought to block, would create a group worth around 50 billion euros ($58 billion) on the Milan bourse. Banco BPM estimated earnings per share would rise by more than 10%, driven by annual pre-tax benefits of more than 1.1 billion euros. The announcement could kick-off a second wave of dealmaking in Italian banking after a burst of M&A activity last year. Banco BPM said its board, which includes representatives of France's Credit Agricole, its main shareholder, had unanimously approved a move to express interest to MPS in discussing a "merger of equals." The bank gave no details on deal structure, saying only that it would give both groups equal weight in the combined entity. MPS did not immediately comment on the BPM's announcement. The bank has a board meeting scheduled on Monday, giving it a first opportunity to discuss the matter, according to a person close to the matter. Banco BPM became an investor in MPS in November 2024, when the Italian government completed the reprivatization of the bailed-out Tuscan bank and brought in domestic investors as core shareholders. At the time, prospects of a BPM-MPS tie-up prompted UniCredit to launch a takeover offer for Banco BPM. The bid ultimately failed in July 2025 but prevented the target from pursuing alternative M&A moves. Chichester Festival theatre This stage version of Ian McEwan’s devastating class novel shows inspiring touches and the cast play adeptly, yet the tale’s emotional sweep feels underpowered Ian McEwan’s novel begins with a play. It is written by 13-year-old Briony Tallis, who has a gift for telling stories. It is perhaps appropriate that Briony’s tale – the one she is constructing through the course of McEwan’s novel – has been adapted for the stage itself now, although it is a hard act to follow the magnificence of the book and also Joe Wright’s celebrated film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy . The plot reflects on the healing power of storytelling but also its potential to cause damage and destroy. It opens in 1935 in an aristocratic English country home, when one evening, after seeing the housekeeper’s son, Robbie (Jasper Talbot), having sex with her sister, Cecilia (Miriam Petche), she wrongly accuses him of raping her 15-year-old cousin Lola (Yanexi Enriquez). Briony lives with the guilt of that lie long after Robbie has been sent to prison and then the frontline of the second world war. Continue reading...

todamo OPEC+ agreed on Sunday to raise oil production again in July, as the producer group continued its gradual rollback of voluntary supply cuts while emphasizing it remains prepared to adjust course if market conditions weaken. Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman said they would collectively increase output by 188,000 barrels per day in July. The move is part of the phased unwinding of production reductions first announced in April 2023. The decision follows a series of recent supply increases by the alliance as it seeks to balance recovering demand with its goal of maintaining stability in global crude markets. The latest adjustment is significant for investors because it signals that OPEC+ remains confident enough in oil demand to return additional barrels to the market, while retaining the flexibility to halt or reverse those increases if prices come under pressure. The group's decisions are closely watched by energy investors because they influence crude prices, inflation expectations and the earnings outlook for oil producers, refiners and energy-service companies. In a statement, the seven countries said the increase would take effect in July and could be modified depending on evolving market conditions. The group stressed that it would maintain a cautious approach and preserve the ability to accelerate, pause or reverse future production changes. The producers also reaffirmed their commitment to compensating for output that exceeded agreed quotas. To facilitate those efforts, the deadline for making compensation cuts has been extended through the end of December 2026. Compliance has been a persistent challenge within OPEC+, particularly among some members that have produced above their assigned targets. The group said the additional supply increase would provide countries with greater flexibility to meet their compensation obligations while continuing the broader production-management strategy. The seven countries said they wou...
