Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News Ford ( F ) will run a software update on about 1.4M F-150 trucks in the U.S. due to an issue that may cause unexpected gear downshift, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday. The recall covers 2015-2017 F-150 vehicles. “A loss of signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into second gear,” NHTSA said. Ford ( F ) is aware of two injuries and one accident potentially related to this concern. The recall follows an expanded safety investigation by NHTSA earlier this year into the trucks after reports of unexpected gear shifts. The regulator said dealers will update the powertrain control module software, free of charge, to address the issue. You may have heard that it's not a good idea to retire on Social Security alone. And there's a lot of truth in that argument. The average retirement benefit among Social Security recipients today is only about $2,079. On an annual basis, that's roughly $25,000 to live on, which isn't a whole lot. Image source: Getty Images. Many in the Iranian capital feel trapped between war with the US and the brutality of the regime’s repression Like many in Tehran, Mehdi, 36, an IT professional, had fled the capital in the early days of the war to stay with relatives in the north. Returning to the city, he was confronted by bombed-out buildings, debris and rubble still scattered across the roads. His home has been damaged by the blasts, the glass shattered and bedroom window frames blown out. In his first days home – just before the ceasefire was agreed – a series of explosions sent him scrambling for shelter. Continue reading...

Alllex/E+ via Getty Images By Kelvin Wong Gold (XAU/USD) has held steady on Friday, 17 April 2026, during the Asian session with a minuscule intraday gain of 0.2% to trade at $4,800 at this time of writing. The precious yellow metal was on track for a fourth straight weekly gain, as hopes for a US-Iran peace deal eased fears of stagflation risk and higher longer-term interest rates. Based on the pre-US-Iran war baseline set on 27 February 2026, gold has plummeted by 22% (high to low) to print an intraday low of $4,099 on 23 March 2026. Thereafter, it rebounded by 18% to hit an intraday high of $4,871 on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, just below its 50-day moving average, which is acting as an intermediate resistance at around $4,900. So far, spot gold based on prices quoted by the London Bullion Market Association has underperformed the other global cross-asset classes since the start of the war, where it still recorded a loss of 8% as of Thursday, 16 April 2026, versus positive gains seen in global equities, where the MSCI All Country World Index rebounded back to almost the unchanged level (+0.69%), led by the US mega-cap technology centric, Nasdaq 100 that reversed to a gain of 5.50% (see Fig. 1). Fig. 1: Global cross-asset performances from 27 Feb 2026 to 16 Apr 2026 (Source: MacroMicro). The primary reason for gold to lag equities at this juncture (same movement but different pace) is due to its non-income-bearing feature, as gold does not yield dividends and earnings but competes with the US dollar and fixed-income assets such as bonds. Intermarket analysis suggests that gold is likely to play a bullish catch-up at this juncture to narrow equities’ outperformance gap. A less hawkish Fed may put a halt to the US dollar's strength Fig. 2: CME FedWatch tool aggregated FOMC meeting probabilities as of 17 Apr 2026 (Source: CME FedWatch tool). During the onset of the US-Iran war, the US Dollar Index staged a rally of 3% to hit an 11-month high of 100.64 on 31 March 2026,...

Australia’s Treasury initially opted to set aside complaints about the nation’s sovereign debt manager before reversing course weeks later to order an independent review, documents released Friday under a Freedom of Information Act request showed. An internal submission to Treasury Secretary Jenny Wilkinson in November showed the Treasury “does not intend to take further action at this point in time” after examining concerns about the Australian Office of Financial Management , which oversees nearly A$1 trillion ($716 billion) in government borrowing. These concerns included issues with “capability and leadership,” as well as high staff turnover and declining public service survey results, according to the documents. However, the Treasury’s position shifted within weeks, raising questions about oversight of one of the government’s most critical financial institutions. The documents pointed to underlying pressures within the organization, which plays a central role in funding the government, managing liquidity and overseeing financial risks. Staff turnover reached as high as 36% in one year following the pandemic, while concerns were raised about leadership and the impact of a major restructure finalized in December 2025. The restructure was designed to “improve agility and accountability” and recognize the “important role the AOFM plays as part of the Australian Government and as a key institution in Australia’s financial architecture,” the documents showed. AOFM Chief Executive Officer Anna Hughes wrote to Wilkinson in January, saying “some concerns have been raised regarding our ongoing capability” and requesting an independent review. “Given the important role the AOFM plays both for the government and within Australia’s capital markets, I consider it important that both Treasury and the AOFM receive assurances that the AOFM’s workforce can continue to deliver on its key purposes and meet or exceed the performance measures set out in our corporate plan,” Hughes s...

mustafaU Oil prices slipped in early Friday trade, as optimism grew that the Middle East conflict may be easing after a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect and Donald Trump signaled that the U.S. and Iran could hold talks over the weekend. Brent crude ( CO1:COM ) futures eased 0.62% to $98.77/bbl at press time, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude ( CL1:COM ) fell 1% to $93.69, trimming gains from the previous session. Trump expressed confidence that an agreement could soon be reached to end the Iran war and urged the Tehran-aligned Hezbollah group to hold its fire as a 10-day truce went in to effect between Lebanon and Israel. Trump said the next meeting between the United States and Iran could take place at the weekend and an extension of a two-week ceasefire was possible, but may not be needed as Tehran wanted a deal. "We're going to see what happens. But I think we're very close to making a deal with Iran," he told reporters outside the White House, adding if an agreement was reached and signed in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, he may go there for the occasion, Reuters reported. A Pakistani source involved in mediating between the U.S. and Iran said on Friday there was progress in backdoor diplomacy and that an upcoming meeting between the two sides could result in the signing of an agreement, the report added. The two sides would first sign a memorandum of understanding followed by a comprehensive agreement within 60 days, the source said. Elsewhere, France and Britain will chair a meeting on Friday of around 40 countries aimed at signalling to the United States that some of its closest allies, many chided by Trump for failing to act, are ready to help restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz once conditions allow.
