Private markets firms have been slow to spend hoards of capital raised earlier this decade, sparking tough talks with investors about whether they should get more time to find investments. As of September, buyout firms and managers of private credit funds were sitting on $631.8 billion in unused fire power raised from 2020 through 2022, according to the most recent data compiled by PitchBook. The tally including other kinds of private capital, such as venture capital and real estate, totals $1.28 trillion. The glut of capital shows how striking deals has proved harder than expected due to intense competition, high valuations and a series of challenges that have jolted the $11 trillion private equity and private credit industries. After a fund is raised, managers typically have as much as five years to put money to work before they start to harvest existing investments. The managers, or general partners, are often only able to increase these investment periods in agreement with their investors, known as limited partners. Some believe talks could be difficult. Fund investors “are most likely not going to be generous in allowing extensions,” said Andrea Auerbach , global head of private investments at advisory firm Cambridge Associates. “Better to get that uninvested capital released so they can redeploy it where they see opportunity.” Asset allocators are asking why deadlines should be extended, the implications for their investments, and what else could have been done with the funds, said Neal Prunier , a managing director at the Institutional Limited Partners Association, whose role includes working on aligning the interests of general and limited partners. McKinsey & Co. says the dry powder in private equity “has never been older.” More than 40% of this capital had been available for two years — 15 percentage points higher than the five-year average, McKinsey said, citing Preqin data as of June 2025. About $139.4 billion of private equity capital raised in 2021 alo...

tigerstrawberry Amazon Prime Day returns June 23–26, marking a notable shift from its traditional July timing. The four-day event that is exclusive to Prime members will feature millions of deals across more than 35 categories, from electronics and fashion to groceries and back-to-school essentials. "Prime Day is the biggest shopping event of the year exclusively for members, whether they're looking for deals on the latest electronics, getting ahead on back-to-school shopping, or saving on fresh groceries and household essentials," said Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime. Early deals, including a sweepstakes for free groceries for a year, are already live ahead of the main event. Prime Day 2025 set the bar high after Amazon ( AMZN ) called it the biggest Prime Day ever, with Prime members saving more than any previous event across more than 35 categories. Adobe Analytics estimated that U.S. consumers spent $24.1B online during the four-day event, surpassing projections by $300M and roughly equivalent to combining Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2024. Top-selling categories included kids' apparel, home security, refrigerators, and headphones, while Numerator tracked more than 150K with an average value of $53.34. Amazon's ( AMZN ) move to push Prime Day up on the calendar to June is not going unnoticed by other major retailers. Both Target ( TGT ) and Best Buy ( BBY ) have officially announced competing sales events timed directly alongside Prime Day. Target Circle Deal Days runs June 23–26, identical dates to Prime Day, with early access beginning June 22 for Target Circle 360 paid members. Meanwhile, Best Buy's Tech Fest Sale runs June 22–28, one day earlier and two days longer than Prime Day, with the retailer calling it one of its "biggest sale events of the summer." Walmart ( WMT ) followed up Amazon's ( AMZN ) Prime Day announcement with a reveal that the Walmart Deals sale will go live on June 22 and run right through the week until June 28. The sale wi...

With 10-year Treasury yields up 26 basis points since the start of the year and inflationary pressures reignited due to the war in Iran, the Federal Reserve may not be able to lower interest rates this year. Fed funds futures imply as much. Those instruments indicate that it's all but a sure thing the central bank will stand pat at the upcoming June and July meetings. That's frustrating to investors holding broad bond exchange-traded funds (ETFs) such as the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (NYSEMKT: AGG) because when yields fall, bond prices rise. Not enough of that is happening this year. Some bond ETFs are more advantageous than meets the eye even without the Fed cutting rates. Image source: Getty Images. Continue reading

South African business leaders warned that Johannesburg’s deepening fiscal and governance crisis risks undermining the country’s improving economic outlook, calling for urgent action to rebuild the nation’s commercial capital. The city’s decline has become a national emergency because it accounts for about 16% of gross domestic product and is central to domestic and foreign investment decisions, Business Leadership South Africa said in a statement on Thursday. Its deterioration risks weakening investor confidence just as South Africa’s economic-recovery story gains traction, the lobby group said. “The situation is urgent and critical,” BLSA said. Read More: ‘City of Gold’ Loses its Luster as Specter of Bankruptcy Emerges The warning comes after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in April threatened to cut crucial state funding to Johannesburg unless the city addresses $1.4 billion of wasteful spending and cancels plans to raise municipal wages by more than $600 million by next year. State power utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. has also signaled it may suspend power supplies to the city over unpaid debt. The crisis in Johannesburg reflects years of accumulated failures across successive administrations, BLSA said. Capital expenditure has fallen to 6% of the city’s budget, maintenance spending is about 0.5% of asset value, while rates and services charges have more than doubled in real terms over the past 15 years, even as property values have fallen and service quality has deteriorated. The private sector is prepared to work with the city and national government to help stabilize Johannesburg by providing expertise in governance, infrastructure delivery, financial management and anti-corruption measures. That offer is contingent on there being “a counterparty capable of governing scrupulously, delivering for the City, and being held to account,” BLSA said. Such an approach would mirror business’s collaboration with the national government under a partnership founded th...
