Tesla Avoids California Suspension By Dropping 'Self-Driving' Claims Authored by Rob Sabo via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours), Tesla Motors avoided a 30-day suspension of its dealer and manufacturer licenses from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) by removing the term “autopilot” from its vehicle marketing efforts in California. The Tesla booth at the AI+Expo Special Competitive Studies Project in Washington on June 2, 2025. Madalina Vasiliu/The Epoch Times According to a statement issued by the California DMV on Feb. 17, Tesla had marketed its full self-driving feature as essentially an autonomous driving feature . Although full self-driving is a hands-free feature, Tesla owners still need to actively supervise the operation of their vehicles. The DMV said Tesla had been marketing its advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) as a full driver-free autopilot feature since 2021 by including terms such as “autopilot” and “full self-driving capability” in marketing collateral and on its website. “ The system is designed to be able to conduct short and long-distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat, ” Tesla’s website formerly said. The California DMV stated that drivers should be present and supervise the self-driving feature. “Vehicles equipped with those ADAS features could not at the time of those advertisements, and cannot now, operate as autonomous vehicles,” the DMV wrote. According to the California DMV, Tesla removed that language from its website and marketing efforts in December 2025. The DMV had initiated accusations of false advertisement against Tesla’s dealer and manufacturer licenses in November 2023. The California Office of Administrative Hearings heard the case last July and made a proposed decision on Nov. 20, 2025. Tesla was given 60 days to address and remedy the issue of the suspension of its licenses in the state for 30 days. Tesla subsequently rebranded the feature as “full self-driving (supervised)” ...

Gina Ferazzi | Los Angeles Times | Getty Images Despite Friday's Supreme Court decision that ruled President Donald Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs are illegal, U.S. importers are still paying duties on goods entering the country. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has yet to update its Cargo System Management Service to remove the duties imposed by Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Under U.S. trade policy, Customs must post updates on tariff changes and other trade-related information on its Cargo Systems Messaging Service . On Friday, Customs posted a bulletin on the decision saying, "[T]he CBP is working with other government agencies to fully examine the implications of the SCOTUS decision. CBP will provide additional information and technical guidance for Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) filers as soon as it becomes available." CNBC was told by Customs that this is the latest update for importers for now. The paperless Automated Commercial Environment is the Customs system used for processing imports and exports. An executive order signed by Trump in March charged the CBP with modernizing its manual payment system. "Customs has not removed the requirement to report the IEEPA tariff codes in order to obtain a release of goods, so for cargo to continue moving, the IEEPA tariffs are still being reported on entries," explained Lori Mullins, director of operations at Rogers & Brown Custom Brokers. "We are still anticipating a CSMS message confirming that a change to now accept entries without these tariffs, but as of now, that change has not been made, and Customs still requires them." An estimated 211,000 containers of goods, valued at some $8.2 billion, arrived in U.S. ports between Friday and Sunday, according to Vizion's trade platform Tradeview. Mullins said importers have a 10-day window to pay the tariffs. "No money is actually being ...

Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images News The ongoing shutdown of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is injecting fresh uncertainty into airport operations and the broader travel ecosystem, with expedited screening programs briefly swept into the political crossfire. In a statement early Sunday, DHS outlined emergency steps aimed at conserving cash and manpower during the funding lapse, initially indicating that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) would suspend expedited airport services, including the widely used TSA PreCheck program. Hours later, the department revised its guidance, removing PreCheck from the list of affected services. TSA subsequently said the program remains operational but could face adjustments if staffing shortages intensify. The shutdown began Feb. 14 after Senate Democrats blocked DHS funding amid disputes over immigration enforcement policy. While TSA PreCheck remains active for now, DHS confirmed that Global Entry (the expedited customs re-entry program managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection) has been suspended. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will limit responses to active disasters only, and the department has halted police escorts for members of Congress at airports. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem characterized the actions as “tough but necessary workforce and resource decisions,” arguing that the department must mitigate the operational strain caused by the funding impasse. Democratic lawmakers on the House Homeland Security Committee countered that scaling back traveler programs risks compounding inefficiencies. In public remarks, they noted that services such as TSA PreCheck and Global Entry help shorten lines and reduce staffing pressure, suggesting that curtailing them could worsen airport congestion rather than relieve it. Airlines for America, which represents major U.S. carriers, warned that travelers risk becoming collateral damage in the political dispute. CEO Chris Sununu said th...

‘Generational’ reforms are a key moment for Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, and for Keir Starmer Ministers will unveil a “generational” overhaul of special educational needs and disabilities (Send) support, pledging £4bn to transform provision in schools in England and warning councils they could lose control of Send services if they fail to meet their legal duties. The reforms are expected to be a key policy moment for Keir Starmer and for the education secretary, Bridget Phillipson – who delayed the changes last autumn after a ferocious backlash from MPs and parents. DSCimage/iStock via Getty Images Recent sector rotation has weighed on water technology stocks, but BNP Paribas sees the selloff in Xylem ( XYL ) and Veralto ( VLTO ) as an opportunity for investors willing to look past short-term flows. In a research note on Friday, analyst Andrew Buscaglia argues that heavy rotation into cyclical industrials, and fading enthusiasm for water as an investment theme, has pushed valuations for both companies to rare discounts relative to the broader market and peers. “We believe recent underperformance for both XYL and VLTO presents a buying opportunity as valuations for both are now at rare discounts to the broader market,” Buscaglia wrote. Valuation disconnect Both stocks now trade at under 21 times 2027 earnings estimates, compared with mid-20x multiples for comparable industrial names, according to BNP. Buscaglia contends that the compression is disconnected from earnings trends, noting both companies have delivered double-digit growth in recent years, with similar expansion projected into 2026. “Valuation has come untethered to earnings, which have grown over double-digits the last several years and we foresee similar growth in ’26,” he said. The analyst attributes the weakness primarily to thematic rotation, as investors have shifted capital toward high-growth narratives such as AI, data centers and electrification, leaving more defensive infrastructure themes under-owned. Xylem: Margin story intact For Xylem ( XYL ), a mixed fourth-quarter print and slightly soft 2025 guidance added pressure. However, BNP argues the core margin expansion thesis remains intact. Buscaglia points to continued progress on the company’s 80/20 operational initiative, exposure to industrial end markets that could benefit from cyclical upside, and the potential for more active capital deployment in 2026. Veralto: Consistency overlooked Veralto ( VLTO ), meanwhile, has delivered two consecutive years of beating guidance, a track record BNP believes the ...
