The US Supreme Court keeps bolstering Republicans, even as the justices insist they don’t play politics. The latest move came Tuesday night, when the court said Alabama could eliminate a majority-Black congressional district and in all likelihood flip a US House seat to Republicans as they vie to keep control of Congress in the November midterms. The four-page ruling , which drew a blistering dissent, expanded what was already a blockbuster April 29 decision rolling back use of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protects minority voters. The decision made Alabama the fifth state where Republicans have won a Supreme Court redistricting battle in the past six months, compared with one Democratic victory. The high court and its Republican-appointed supermajority could give the GOP two more election-law victories in the coming weeks with scheduled rulings in campaign finance and ballot-deadline cases. Chief Justice John Roberts last month defended the court against accusations of partisanship. “We’re not simply part of the political process, and there’s a reason for that, and I’m not sure that people grasp that as much as is appropriate,” he said at a judicial conference. Fellow conservatives Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett have made similar comments in recent weeks. But the court keeps giving its critics more ammunition. The 6-3 decision Tuesday night rejected a three-judge panel’s conclusion that Alabama violated the Constitution by intentionally leaving Black voters just short of a majority in a pivotal district in a proposed map. The panel, which included two appointees of President Donald Trump , had required the state to keep using a map with two majority-Black districts. The unsigned opinion cleared Alabama Republicans to deploy their new map even though the lower court said the move would spawn chaos by requiring election officials to shift 600,000 voters into different districts in time for the Aug. 11 primary. “States are free to decide for themselves whethe...

A global shortage of memory chips fueled by the artificial intelligence boom poses a growing risk to industries ranging from automakers to producers of medical devices, according to a coalition of US business groups who urged the Trump administration to help increase supply of the components. In a letter Wednesday to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick , nine trade associations representing a range of industries warned that the memory shortage threatens to disrupt critical supply chains and is likely to raise consumer prices in the near term. The coalition blamed the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers for consuming a disproportionate amount of memory chip capacity, resulting in “an unprecedented surge in the price of memory chips and reduced supply of these chips for manufacturing and consumer-facing industries.” “While recent developments in AI offer the promise of generational technological advances and are important for US tech leadership, we must also ensure other key industries are not negatively impacted by this disruption in the marketplace,” wrote the groups. Signers included the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association and the National Retail Federation. Read More: SK Hynix Plans to Double Capacity to Ease Memory Chip Crunch The trade associations said that in addition to increasing prices for consumer electronics, costs are also rising for internet and telecommunications infrastructure, while cars, medical devices and other manufactured goods could face shortages. Federal contractors, especially small businesses, also face challenges in meeting procurement obligations. Memory chips have been in short supply as AI drives unprecedented demand for products once considered commodities. Chip designers like Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. are paying top dollar for the high-bandwidth memory needed to build AI hardware, leading memory providers to prioritize t...

They make up a quiet but crucial piece of the booming artificial intelligence market, and represent a growing problem for the U.S., because nearly all AI circuit boards, for Nvidia and others, are made in China. Circuit boards present all sorts of opportunities for adversaries to sneak through malicious components. That vulnerability has created national security concerns so significant that the U.S. Defense Department is requiring most of its purchases to come from the dwindling number of domestic factories. "Chips, substrates, PCBs represent multiple avenues of attack for a potential malicious actor," said Mike Cadenazzi, U.S. assistant secretary of war for industrial base policy, in an interview with CNBC. Worst case scenario, he said, a compromised PCB could mean a "missile malfunctions in flight." Some 30% of the world's supply of printed circuit boards, or PCBs, used to come from the U.S. That number has dropped to just 4%, according to the Printed Circuit Board Association of America, or PCBAA. Domestic capacity can't keep up with state-sponsored manufacturers in China, where material and labor costs are also lower. PCBAA executive director David Schild said six of 10 PCBs are now made in mainland China, which he described as a "risky dependency." Former U.S. deputy under secretary of defense Al Shaffer, who helped make technology acquisition decisions in the Obama administration and in President Donald Trump's first term, says PCBs are the "easiest place to disrupt an electronics chain" because of the ability to hide things in substrates and layers. The U.S. government is now weighing subsidies to boost domestic PCB manufacturing, with lawmakers in both chambers of co...

SpaceX is seeking to raise $75 billion in an initial public offering that would be the biggest of all time, as Elon Musk ’s rocket, space and artificial intelligence company targets a historic debut that could clear a path for more mega-listings. The Starbase, Texas-based company plans to market about 555.6 million shares for $135, according to its filing Wednesday with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. At that price, SpaceX would have a market value of almost $1.77 trillion based on the outstanding shares in the filing. At $75 billion, SpaceX’s IPO would easily top Aramco ’s record $29.4 billion listing in 2019, and would open the door to debuts for OpenAI and Anthropic PBC . The firms are expected to target double-digit billion-dollar IPOs of their own if they both go ahead with plans to list as soon as this year, catching investors’ seemingly unquenchable thirst for AI themes. Read More: SpaceX IPO Forces Wall Street to Reorganize Around It SpaceX plans to use the proceeds for purposes including funding the expansion of its AI, rocket launch and satellite infrastructure, the filing shows. The company is required to use proceeds of certain debt financings and this IPO to repay within six months at least some of a $20 billion bridge loan, according to the filing. Much of the loan was used to take out high-interest junk debt for Musk’s social media and AI companies. Lofty Goals The IPO is expected to price as soon as June 11, Bloomberg News has reported. The filing tees the company up to begin the formal marketing process for the IPO on Thursday where Musk and executives officially take their pitch to investors, reeling off SpaceX’s grand plans not only for so-called orbital AI compute at scale but building out its direct-to-cell wireless business, ramping up AI semiconductor production with Musk’s Tesla Inc. , and eventually, building bases on the Moon and a colony on Mars. The filing shows SpaceX signed a contract with Anthropic to provide AI compute for ...

Ferrari (NYSE: RACE) is taking on a big risk launching the Luce, the company's first fully electric vehicle (EV). One part of the broader risk is that there might not be a market for ultra-high-end EVs, which was a reason rival Lamborghini canceled its first planned full EV. It was also a sizable risk for the brand to develop an EV when it drifts away from its heritage of racing-inspired designs and powerful, loud combustion engines. If Ferrari's goal was to get everyone talking about the Luce, it was a resounding success. If Ferrari's goal was to convince everyone the Luce was a true Ferrari product design, the initial feedback was overwhelmingly negative. Ferrari's stock initially traded lower after the unveiling, but for savvy investors, Ferrari's risk presents an opportunity. That Ferrari's Luce was unveiled with a shocking design probably shouldn't surprise anyone, considering that the new four-door, five-seat "family car" was designed largely by auto industry outsiders Jony Ive and Marc Newsom. The backlash was intense and wasn't limited to social media, as even the Italian deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, weighed in, along with former Ferrari CEO Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.
