Hedge funds’ net sales of global stocks reached the fastest pace since the tariff meltdown of early April 2025, according to traders on Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s Prime Services Desk. Net selling in the week through Feb. 19 was so strong that it registered a negative 1.4 standard deviation from typical levels, the Goldman traders said. Overall trading activity continued a recent increase, driven by short sales, they said in a client note. While these figures precede the latest trade tariff turmoil, the selling underscores doubts among some investors that gains in stocks linked to economic growth can be sustained. Mixed readings on the economy and concerns about disruption from new artificial intelligence applications have shaken bullish market sentiment, with the S&P 500 also on course for its worst monthly performance since last April. “All major regions were net sold, led by North America and Europe,” the Goldman team said. “Single stocks and macro products were both net sold and made up 58% and 42% of the total notional net selling, respectively, both led by short sales.” European stocks experienced the fastest selling in five months, driven by a reduction in long exposure, the traders said. At the sector level, seven of 11 global industry groups were net sold, led by financials, which also came in for the largest net disposals since last April. Meanwhile, energy, health care and staples were the most net-bought sectors. Hedge fund performance for the early part of 2026 remains solid, despite choppy markets that included the worst single-day drop for three major fund strategies since the Covid pandemic. The Goldman team flagged in a note last week that US funds were reducing exposure at a rapid pace . Hedge funds had piled into short positions on US stocks earlier in the month.

A tanker carrying diesel from India has moored in Europe’s largest port, a notable arrival after some traders had expressed caution about falling foul of new sanctions on buying fuel made from Russian crude. The Proteus Bohemia , carrying about 100,000 tons of diesel, entered the port of Rotterdam on Monday, according to a port report and ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. It’s the first petroleum fuel cargo from India to arrive in the key Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp oil-trading hub since the European Union imposed sanctions on imports made from Russian crude. The vessel doesn’t appear to have yet discharged, ship-tracking data show. While some middlemen had said that a caution-first approach is being taken toward any supplies that could breach sanctions that kicked in on Jan. 21, the Proteus Bohemia’s arrival suggests at least a degree of confidence in bringing in barrels from India — historically a major user of Russian crude. The appetite to import Indian fuel matters because the nation was the third-largest supplier of seaborne diesel and jet fuel cargoes to the EU last year. The tanker loaded in mid-January at the Indian port of Sikka, which is used to export fuels produced at Reliance Industries Ltd. ’s enormous Jamnagar facility, Vortexa data show. The vessel is chartered by Reliance and reached northwest Europe by sailing around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, according to Vortexa. Reliance didn’t reply to an email seeking comments on Monday. The sanctions are an attempt to prevent Russian hydrocarbons coming into the bloc through the “ back door .” Official EU guidance advises operators to be particularly cautious about shipments from India, Turkey and China, given those nations’ imports of Russian crude since Moscow’s war with Ukraine began. Although EU rules ban imports of petroleum products made using Russian crude, a refinery can process Russian oil and send fuel to the bloc, as long as the product comes from a “non-Russian oil” production line, acco...

Boy Wirat/iStock via Getty Images Alphabet stock: FQ4 earnings recap I last covered Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG ) (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) on Jan 16, 2026, with an article titled "Alphabet: Why I Agree With Wall Street This Time." The article was triggered by the sentiment changes from Wall Street and rated the stock as a buy. Since then, there have been a few new catalysts surrounding this AI frontrunner. The remainder of this article will focus on the top 3 as I see: the updates provided in its FQ4 earnings report (ER), the company’s updated capital allocation plan, and also the potential IPO of SpaceX ( SPACE ). Examination of these developments has updated my understanding of the company’s long-term moat. In particular, I will argue that the market’s concerns about its surge in AI CAPEX budget for 2026 are short-sighted. These developments have led me to see that Alphabet’s balance sheet is treated by investors as a sovereign-like entity. A good sovereign entity, I might add, with the hallmark of being able to borrow a ton but not really needing to. Let me start with a brief recap of the FQ4 ER. The basic information is recapped in the snapshot below. As seen, GOOGL delivered another double-beating quarter. Although, in its ER, Google announced an upward CAPEX revision between $175 billion and $185 billion, almost doubling its 2025 budget (with a YOY increase rate of about 97% to be more precise). Judging by the share price movements in the open market after the ER, such a surge raised investors’ concern about the CAPEX sustainability and return potential. I will next explain why I am not concerned. I am optimistic that, despite such a surge, GOOG has the capital flexibility and cash generation to maintain an elevated annual capital expenditure budget without diluting shareholders or exhausting its cash reserves. Seeking Alpha GOOG stock is treated like a sovereign-like entity Moving on to the next development catalyzed this GOOG follow-up: its recent activities on the capit...
