South Africa’s latest budget painted an encouraging picture of improving public finances, according to Moody’s Ratings, while cautioning that “meaningful” debt reduction will require stronger economic growth. The budget “confirms South Africa’s strong fiscal performance, underpinned by broad-based revenue growth, and points to improving fiscal prospects,” said Evan Wohlmann, Vice President-Senior Credit Officer at Moody’s. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana ’s annual budget presentation on Wednesday showed debt and debt-service costs peaking this year and then declining, helped by surging precious-metals prices that have boosted government revenue. The rand and government bonds rallied. Read More: Bonds Extend Gains on Budget as Debt Peaks: Inside South Africa In his speech to lawmakers in Cape Town, the minister said the world had taken note, citing S&P Global Ratings’ decision in November to grant South Africa its first upgrade in two decades. That lifted S&P’s assessment to BB from BB-minus and also put it on a positive outlook, which South African officials said was as good as two ratings upgrades. The move raised hope that the country is on track to restore the investment-grade rating it lost as public finances deteriorated under former President Jacob Zuma , whose tenure in office was marred by corruption scandals, mismanagement and soaring debt levels. Moody’s rates South Africa Ba2 — two notches below investment grade. National Treasury Director-General Duncan Pieterse said his team was actively engaging credit-rating companies to encourage them to recognize the country’s progress. “We have taken a much more proactive approach, interrogating the modeling of some of the ratings agencies, questioning some of those assumptions and making our case of fiscal credibility,” he told reporters in Cape Town. “Over time, hopefully, that will assist in the potential for ratings upgrades.” Read More: South Africa’s Budget Marks Turning Point With Debt to Peak Moody’s cut ...

Half a century ago, the famed New York venue run by a former marine and folk singer was ground zero for the punk and new wave scenes. Now the bands who played there are being celebrated on a 101-track box set Fifty years ago, a dive bar in New York’s East Village started to attract attention as a new hub for rock music. Initially, this was a whisper conveyed in a handful of small-circulation music magazines. Then, celebrated musicians, record label executives, hip journalists and photographers, followed by the influencers of that era, began making a beeline for 315 Bowery, the home of CBGB. Inside, an array of young, unknown artists were making music that would change rock’s sound and look, attitude and aesthetic. These outsiders created a template for punk, spoken word, powerpop, new wave, no wave, mutant funk, hardcore and so much more besides. Continue reading...

The Palace hero must wonder how things have gone so wrong so quickly, but still hopes ‘to shift the narrative’ Dean Henderson became a cult hero in south London after saving a penalty in Crystal Palace’s victory against Manchester City in last season’s FA Cup final. The England goalkeeper then boosted his popularity when he dropped into a local pub as supporters celebrated August’s penalty shootout victory over Liverpool in the Community Shield and put £1,000 behind the bar. Henderson, made captain when Marc Guéhi was sold to Manchester City in January after Palace were humbled in the Cup by non-league Macclesfield, must be wondering how things have turned sour at Selhurst Park so quickly. Supporters turned on the manager, Oliver Glasner, during the first leg of the Conference League playoff against Zrinjski Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina last week and demanded his sacking after another unconvincing performance in the 1-1 draw . How did a small Nordic country dominate the Games? By making sport fun and not something for kids to suffer Norway’s Olympians stormed the mountains of Milano Cortina and left the rest of the world wondering how a nation of 5.6 million people regularly tops the Winter Olympics medal table, this year winning 18 gold medals and 41 medals overall. They’re not bad at the Summer Olympics either, despite not playing to their obvious national geographical strengths, winning four gold medals and a total of eight medals in Paris 2024. But all this talk of medals detracts from looking more closely at what the Norwegians do to create one of the best and most sustainable sports systems in the world. Continue reading...

Costs will increase at extended 2026 tournament Around 10 federations want Fifa to tackle problems A number of European football federations fear they will lose money sending their national teams to the World Cup this summer, with an unusual hike in costs and inconsistencies around tax exemptions among the problems Fifa is being urged to rectify. Although Fifa approved record prize money of £539m for the tournament last December it may not be enough to prevent losses, or reduced profits, for competitors who would usually expect a World Cup to generate vital funds. An investigation by the Guardian and PA Media found particular concerns among football associations about the consequences of missing out on money that would largely be reinvested in local initiatives. KKR & Co. sold a minority stake in its post-trade services provider OSTTRA to six banks, in the latest such deal for a financial-market infrastructure firm. The group comprised Bank of America Corp. , Barclays Plc , Citigroup Inc. , HSBC Holdings Plc , UBS Group AG and Wells Fargo & Co. The banks made a combined $100 million “strategic equity investment,” according to a statement Thursday from OSTTRA, which said the firms are “extensive users of its services.” KKR bought London-based OSTTRA from CME Group Inc. and S&P Global Inc. for $3.1 billion last year, and this sale was made at the same valuation, a spokesperson for OSTTRA said. The deal is reminiscent of London Stock Exchange Group Plc ’s sale of a minority share in its Post Trade Solutions business to 11 banks last year. Such firms smooth the clearing, settlement and reporting of a range of financial securities as they change hands in a trade. Wells Fargo is the only member of the six-bank group that wasn’t involved in last year’s LSEG deal . “OSTTRA is a key provider of post-trade services for our Markets division and we are pleased to collaborate with KKR in this journey,” Georges Lauchard, investment bank chief operating officer at Barclays, said in the statement. CME and IHS Markit set up OSTTRA in 2021, with CME contributing its Traiana, TriOptima, and Reset businesses while IHS contributed MarkitSERV. S&P bought IHS in 2022. The banks’ commitment “reinforces the strategic importance of OSTTRA to the global trading industry and validates the progress the firm is making as it accelerates growth and innovation across its global network,” Webster Chua, a partner at KKR, said in the statement.
