Filmed last summer as the government sought to cut disability benefits, this groundbreaking show about an artist and her best friend is laugh-out-loud funny As a rule, I don’t chat about the Equality Act when I’m watching TV. But as I sat down to the new series of We Might Regret This – the BBC’s groundbreaking comedy about a disabled artist and her best friend turned personal assistant – I couldn’t help but think about the cultural and political climate that it’s landing in (one in which politicians are genuinely debating whether we should scrap the law that stops employers from being able to sack someone because they’re disabled). The writers are clearly not naive to this. Filmed last summer as the government sought to cut disability benefits, the first episode opens with Freya (played by co-creator and writer Kyla Harris) in a supermarket filming a public information advert for the Department for Work and Pensions. A prop baby flung over one shoulder and staring up from her wheelchair at nappies on the top shelf, Freya – still half-heartedly doing the disability-themed modelling she started last series – is struggling to get the right expression. Can she use some of her “lived experience”, the director asks. “You saying: ‘Hey, if something is wrong with your body, the government will throw you a fiver.’” Freya offers him another look. “OK, that’s too helpless. That’s Unicef.” Continue reading...

Fetterman Slams Dems For 'Yelling And Screaming' During SOTU More than 70 Democrats skipped President Donald Trump's 2026 State of the Union address Tuesday night, with some participating in rival events. But, most of the caucus did show up at the Capitol, delivering a masterclass in theatrical contempt : stone-faced silence, open heckling, and a near-universal refusal to applaud anything the president said. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), however, chose to be the adult in the Democrat caucus by standing and applauding when Trump said something he agreed with. He then condemned the "yelling and screaming" from some Democrats, adding "I don’t care if it’s a Republican or Democrat, it’s a president. Just don’t do that." "For me, you know, I, I never checked to see what, what the rest of people in my party would stand up and clap for," Fetterman said after the speech. "I clapped with a lot of those things that it seemed like others." He stood for the family of Iryna Zarutska , the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who was brutally stabbed and killed by a career criminal on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, who should have never been on the streets. He stood for Enrique Márquez, a political prisoner freed from Venezuela, who was reunited with his niece during the speech. He also stood for veterans in the audience that Trump recognized. He even stood when Trump honored Erika Kirk , the widow of Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed while speaking in Utah last September. The contrast with his colleagues was stark. Trump made the split visible in real time. At one point during the nearly two-hour-long speech, which broke Trump’s own record for the longest presidential speech to Congress, Trump invited every legislator to make a simple choice. "One of the great things about the State of the Union is how it gives Americans the chance to see clearly what their representatives really believe," he told the chamber. Then he set the trap. "So, tonight, I'm inviting every legislator ...

Optimum Communications Inc. said a top law firm’s withdrawal from representing it under pressure from Apollo Global Management , Ares Management , Oaktree Capital Management and others showed that they were participating in a cartel against it. Optimum, previously known as Altice USA, sued the credit arms of those private equity giants and other creditors in November, saying they had formed an “illegal cartel” to freeze it out of the US credit market. In a revised complaint filed Wednesday, the telecommunications firm said “the antitrust conspiracy has only intensified” in the last three months. “When Optimum sued, Defendants began searching for a way to retaliate,” said Optimum, which is controlled by billionaire Patrick Drahi . “They soon found a target: Optimum’s transaction counsel, Kirkland & Ellis LLP .” Kirkland didn’t represent Optimum in the antitrust case but was advising it on improving its capital structure, according to the suit. But the law firm last month withdrew from that assignment under pressure especially from Apollo, Ares and Oaktree, which are also Kirkland clients, Optimum claimed. “The Defendants knew they had leverage over Kirkland because of the vast sums of legal work they together command.” Spokespeople for Apollo and Ares declined to comment, while representatives for Kirkland & Ellis and Oaktree didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Along with Apollo, Ares and Oaktree, the company also sued BlackRock Financial Management , Goldentree Asset Management and several other firms. The original suit argued that the deal binds “nearly every creditor holding Optimum’s debt” and bars them from dealing with the company unless two-thirds of the firms approve. The creditors are seeking to have the case thrown out , but a federal judge ha...

Earnings Call Insights: LivaNova PLC (LIVN) Q4 2025 Management View CEO Vladimir Makatsaria highlighted that "2025 was a year of strong performance for LivaNova. We delivered double-digit revenue growth, meaningful adjusted operating margin expansion and robust cash generation, reflecting strong execution across our cardiopulmonary and epilepsy businesses." He emphasized the company's fifth consecutive year of double-digit EPS growth and the third year of double-digit organic revenue growth. CEO Makatsaria cited strategic progress, particularly the company’s entry into the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) market, stating, "The first stage of that next chapter is obstructive sleep apnea, where we have a clear right to win based on rigorous clinical evidence, a differentiated technology designed to treat a broader range of challenging patients and our existing neuromodulation capabilities." CEO Makatsaria also announced a key leadership addition: "We recently appointed Lucile Blaise as Global Head of Commercialization for obstructive sleep apnea, further strengthening our leadership team as we prepare to scale the opportunity." CFO Alex Shvartsburg stated, "Revenue in the quarter was $361 million, an increase of 9.5% on a constant currency and organic basis versus the prior year." He added, "Adjusted diluted earnings per share was $0.86 compared to $0.81 in the fourth quarter of 2024." CFO Shvartsburg explained, "Q4 2025 included approximately $0.04 of favorable impact versus prior guidance assumptions related to cardiopulmonary investments, primarily due to timing of the Essenz printed circuit board conversion, where the related costs have been rephased over the rollout period." Outlook CEO Makatsaria guided for "full year 2026 revenue growth between 6% and 7%, which is consistent with the 2025 to 2028 framework detailed at our Investor Day." For cardiopulmonary, "we expect cardiopulmonary revenue to grow 7% to 8%." For epilepsy, "we expect epilepsy revenue growth of 5....
