enot-poloskun Elevated single-stock volatility and surging derivatives activity are raising fresh questions about the stability of the current market backdrop, according to comments from Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok. Recent data show a growing share of constituents within the S&P 500 ( SP500 ) posting single-day gains or losses exceeding 10%, a notable shift from the more muted price action seen in prior quarters. At the same time, dispersion across equities has climbed while implied correlation has declined, signaling that stocks are increasingly trading on company-specific fundamentals rather than broad macro themes. That dynamic can be healthy in moderation, reflecting active price discovery. However, Slok cautions that the combination of heightened dispersion and exceptionally robust options volumes introduces structural vulnerabilities. Options activity remains near historically elevated levels, a trend often associated with increased retail participation and the use of leverage-like strategies to amplify returns. When sharp idiosyncratic swings coincide with heavy derivatives positioning, market liquidity can deteriorate quickly under stress. As a result, Slok argues that the broader market structure appears more fragile than headline index levels might suggest, leaving equities susceptible to an abrupt and potentially outsized move should sentiment or positioning shift suddenly. MOZCO Mateusz Szymanski Uber Technologies ( UBER ) is firmly in the eVTOL business with the introduction of Uber Air powered by Joby, which it described as a seamless way for riders to book Joby Aviation's ( JOBY ) all-electric air taxi directly through the Uber app. Joby Aviation ( JOBY ) expects to carry its first passengers later this year in Dubai, marking a major milestone in the partnership between the two companies to bring multi-modal transportation to cities around the world. What will the future look like? An electric air taxi can be booked by simply opening the Uber ( UBER ) app and entering their destination in the "Where to?" bar. If a trip qualifies, Uber Air powered by Joby will appear as an option. With a single tap, the app seamlessly connects and books every leg of the journey, including Uber Black pickup and drop-off. Joby's ( JOBY ) all-electric air taxi is being designed for up to four passengers, with comfortable seating, featuring large windows with panoramic views of the city below from every seat. Flown by a certified commercial pilot, the aircraft uses six tilting propellers to take off vertically before transitioning into forward flight. It can travel at speeds of up to 200 mph and has a range of up to 100 miles on a single charge. "We set out to build a new layer of urban transportation," stated Joby ( JOBY ) Chief Product Officer Eric Allison. "Our focus has always been on creating a flight experience that operates quietly and integrates naturally into the rhythm of city life. By partnering with Uber, we’re making this new mode of transportation familiar and accessible, connecting the ground and the sky through a system designed to save people time and fit seamlessly into how they already move," he added. Shares of Joby Aviation ( JOBY ) jumped 6.5% in premarket trading following the announcement. Uber ( UBER ) rose 1.2%. Alexandra Scott Shares of Lowe’s ( LOW ) were pinned down in early trading on Wednesday as the company’s latest quarterly results were overshadowed by conservative guidance for the year that underscored challenges within the do-it-yourself (DIY) segment, mirroring a comparable outlook from rival Home Depot ( HD ) on Tuesday. The CEO of Home Depot ( HD ) cautioned that the impact on the business from a “frozen” housing market over the last three years has been exacerbated by “an increase in consumer uncertainty and a gradual decline in consumer confidence.” While Lowe’s CEO Marvin Ellison sees similar challenges tied to the housing market, the company remains focused on what is "within their control," specifically ongoing productivity initiatives and recent investments in its commercial customer with recent acquisitions of Foundation Building Materials and Artisan Design Group. “We remain confident that we are well-positioned to take share regardless of the macro environment,” Ellison said. Driven by continued growth in Pro, online, and home services sales, comparable store sales in the fourth quarter were up 1.3%, better than expectations for a more modest 0.2% increase. This contributed to an 11% increase in total sales to $20.58B, $240M better than expected. Increased expenses, including higher interest and depreciation and amortization costs, resulted in lower net income for the quarter and a 10% decrease in unadjusted earnings. However, stripping out certain items, the company earned an adjusted profit of $1.98 per share, up slightly from a year ago and 4 cents better than expected. For FY26, Lowe’s ( LOW ) expects comparable sales to be flat to up 2%, driving a 7% to 9% gain in total sales to a range of $92.0B to $94.0B with a $93.0B midpoint that is less than $93.28B estimates. Adjusted earnings are seen in a range of $12.25 to $12.75 per share, below the $12.94 consensus estimate. Additionally, adjusted operating margin is expected to be between 11.6% and 11....

The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCEPI), which is the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation, grew at an annualized rate of 4.4 percent in the last month of 2025. The PCEPI grew at an annualized rate of 3.1 percent over the prior three months and 2.9 percent over the prior year. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also remained elevated. Core PCEPI grew at a continuously compounding annual rate of 4.3 percent in December 2025. It grew at an annualized rate of 3.1 percent over the prior three months and 3.0 percent over the prior year. The outsized price increases were widespread, if uneven. Goods prices grew at an annualized rate of 4.7 percent in December and were up 1.7 percent year-over-year. The prices of durable goods grew at an annualized rate of 6.8 percent in December, whereas the prices of non-durable goods grew 3.6 percent. Services prices grew 4.2 percent in December. They grew 3.4 percent over the prior year. Uncertainty Clouds the Policy Outlook Stubbornly high inflation readings over the back half of 2025 led the Federal Open Market Committee to pause its rate cuts last month, with the federal funds rate target range held at 3.5 to 3.75 percent. FOMC members appear to be divided on whether - and, if so, when - to begin cutting rates again. Back in December , the median FOMC member projected the federal funds rate would eventually settle around 3.0, albeit sometime after 2028. But the distribution of projections offered anything but certainty. Four FOMC members projected a longer-run midpoint of the federal funds rate target range at or above 3.5 percent; five members projected a midpoint between 3.0 and 3.5 percent; five members projected a midpoint at 3.0 percent; and four members projected a midpoint below 3.0 percent. The median FOMC member projected just one 25-basis point c...

European government bonds could prove attractive to investors seeking shelter from swings in US stocks caused by artificial intelligence developments, according to ING Groep NV . With US equities volatility on the rise, the euro area bond market remains comparatively stable, offering attractive yields relative to risk, Michiel Tukker , senior European rates strategist, wrote in a note on Wednesday. The so-called AI scare trade erupted again this week as shares of delivery and software companies dropped on worries the technology might disrupt their business models. In this environment, even seemingly minor announcements and product releases can cause dramatic moves in individual stocks. “AI-related equity jitters are unlikely to be resolved overnight,” said Tukker. “The relative volatility of US equities versus eurozone government bonds makes bonds look increasingly attractive.” A gauge of volatility in European rates touched the lowest level since 2021 this month, while swings in US equities are creeping higher . ING argues European debt is an attractive haven because the economy is less dependent on the tech sector for its growth outlook, and uncertainty over monetary policy has come down since the 2022 inflation shock. A challenge to the US as a safe haven should meanwhile support global demand for European debt. Treasury yields rose across the curve on Wednesday, led by longer-dated tenors. European debt markets outperformed, with yields on Italian and French bonds little changed. German yields ticked one basis higher at the long-end. A broad rotation from equities toward bonds may stem the rise in rates from the record supply of euro area government debt this year, Tukker said. Looking globally, ING said that equities make up 70% of investor portfolios, and positioning is “clearly stretched” versus a more conservative 60-40 allocation. “A rebalancing might not have to take the shape of a sharp selloff, but as AI-related volatility lingers, we could foresee a sce...
