Despite lots of uncertainty and even some headwinds this year, the stock market continues to set new all-time highs. The benchmark S&P 500 has hit 7,580 as of this writing and is up roughly 10.5% this year. That's pretty impressive, considering concerns investors were starting to express about artificial intelligence (AI) earlier this year, higher oil and gas prices due to the Iran war, and rising bond yields over concerns about the economy. The market still faces these potential obstacles, and the near-term uncertainty remains. That suggests investors should be prepared for a market correction (a major index like the S&P 500 falling at least 10% from a recent peak). These corrections are actually more common than investors might think. While long-term investors don't necessarily need to adjust their portfolios, if investors are interested in adding some protection, here are the two exchange-traded funds (ETFs) I would buy without hesitation. gorodenkoff/iStock via Getty Images Executive Summary In my February article on Talen Energy Corporation ( TLN ), I said that investors have been focusing too much on the finger (the "multiple") and not enough on the moon (earnings growth). Talen's stock appeared overpriced when you compared the valuation to 2025 accounting multiples. However, many of those numbers were influenced by some non-recurring hedging effects, transition items, and assets that are just now being included in the operating earnings of the business. The market has based its assessment of Talen on what appears to be a somewhat abnormal ( distorted ) snapshot of financial performance. Based on my analysis, I believed that this did not accurately reflect Talen's ability to generate future earnings. Seeking Alpha Since my February article, the stock price of Talen has increased approximately 20%. That is an excellent increase; nevertheless, I do not perceive this as the end of the trading opportunity. On the contrary, I believe that the thesis for the stock has actually become clearer since my February article. On June 1, 2026, Talen received FERC approval regarding their purchase of the Cornerstone Assets from Energy Capital Partners. The FERC approval removes the last major regulatory obstacle and will allow Talen to add nearly 2.6 GW of natural gas generation capacity to its portfolio inside the PJM grid, subject to customary closing conditions. To a company situated at the intersection of dispatchable power generation, increasing constraints to grid capacity, and growing demand for electric power from AI-driven data center demand, this is far from trivial; it represents the point where the potential for this story begins to turn from promise into tangible results. There could be some investors who view the current increase in price and determine that it is a good time to take profits. While I can certainly appreciate the desire to do so, such a decision would miss the fundamental basis of the ...
