Luciani is back – but does it make any more sense 40 years on? When Steve Hanley joined Manchester post-punk group the Fall, he expected to be playing bass guitar, not the pope on the London stage. “I was the new pope,” remembers the musician. “I had a full pope suit on with about seven different layers of cassocks, and I’d come out to wave.” Hanley’s papal arrival signalled the final moments of a kaleidoscopic and surreal production that encompassed mafia gangsters, exiled Nazi commanders, and the performance artist Leigh Bowery playing a cardinal. “It was bizarre,” Hanley concedes. Robert Way NBA star and future Hall of Famer Stephen Curry inked a long-term shoe and apparel deal with Chinese sportswear company Li Ning through the Curry brand in a development that could impact the basketball shoe business of Nike ( NKE ) and Adidas ( ADDYY ) in China, as well as Under Armour ( UAA ), Skechers ( SKX ), and New Balance to a smaller degree in other categories. Li-Ning is a Chinese sportswear brand founded in 1989 by Olympic gymnast Li Ning to give Chinese athletes a national brand on the global stage. It has since grown into a major international player in footwear and apparel, blending performance technology with Chinese cultural design and sponsoring star athletes, especially in basketball, running, and badminton. Li Ning announced the deal with Curry on its official WeChat account, noting the partnership will center on developing professional sports equipment across multiple categories. The deal is expected to help both brands expand globally across categories that include basketball, golf, and lifestyle sportswear. The exact terms of the deal have not been disclosed. In a statement, Stephen Curry said Li Ning built his company from the perspective of an athlete, with the same belief that sport can change lives and inspire the next generation. "The quality, performance, and innovation are real, and it instills confidence in what we can create together across basketball, golf, and lifestyle. For Curry Brand, this is about growing the right way, with a partner that understands the standard we're trying to set and the good we want to do," he highlighted. Stephen Curry and the Curry Brand had a 12-year association with Under Armour ( UAA ) ( UA ) that ended late in 2025.
