Exclusive: Voters say they have little confidence that government can control borders despite sharp falls in net migration A large majority of UK voters believe immigration is increasing despite sharp falls in the number of people entering the UK, according to exclusive polling shared with the Guardian. Voters also say they have no confidence in the government’s ability to control the UK’s borders, according to the poll by More in Common. The results will come as a blow to Keir Starmer’s administration, which has taken an increasingly hardline stance on immigration in recent months. Continue reading...

The booming GLP-1 space was built on weekly injections. In 2026, new obesity pills will push the market into its next chapter. Patients are already getting their hands on the first GLP-1 pill for obesity from Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk — a once-daily drug that shares the same brand name as its popular injection Wegovy. A GLP-1 pill from the company's chief rival Eli Lilly isn't far behind, with a U.S. approval expected within months. For some people, pills may serve as a more convenient — and potentially cheaper — alternative to today's blockbuster injections. The cash prices of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill range from $149 to $299 per month , depending on the dose, which is slightly less than the newly lowered cash prices of injections. While the pills aren't expected to bring more weight loss than weekly shots, based on separate clinical trials, some health experts say expanding the range of treatments could still be a major win for patients. Pills could attract new patients to seek obesity treatment for the first time, expanding the broader weight loss and diabetes drug market and potentially boosting sales for Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. The new users may include people who are afraid of needles, as well as patients who could benefit from existing injections but don't view their condition as severe enough to warrant a weekly shot. "I think that there are a lot of people out there who have never tried these GLP-1 drugs and are maybe waiting for the pills to come out," said Dr. Eduardo Grunvald, medical director of the UC San Diego Health Center for Advanced Weight Management. "It's kind of a natural preference for some people and even some prescribers." "Secondly, if you have to pay out of pocket, the pills are going to be a bit less expensive than the injections, so that's another reason," he said. The logo of pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is displayed in front of its offices in Bagsvaerd, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark, Nov. 24, 2025. Tom Little ...

Maybe a brow gel that goes from borrowed to bought. For many men, like Daniel Rankin, makeup has transformed from something taboo into a tool to make them look less tired and more put together. "I remember thinking, 'Am I really doing this?'" Rankin, a 24-year-old advertising agent from New York who likes to shop at Sephora , told CNBC. "But once I tried it, it just became normal." In front of bathroom mirrors and in gym locker rooms, more men are now adding cosmetics to their routines, industry experts told CNBC. The men's makeup market is now one of the most lucrative — and largely untapped — growth opportunities left in beauty, and specialty retailers like Ulta Beauty and Sephora along with big-box companies like Target and Walmart all see opportunity. "Men's beauty is one of the last categories left where brands can likely still see easy double-digit growth potential simply by showing up," said Delphine Horvath, professor of cosmetics and fragrance marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Men's grooming sales in the United States topped $7.1 billion in 2025, up 6.9% year over year, according to market research firm NielsenIQ . The global market was valued at $61.6 billion in 2024 and projected to surpass $85 billion by 2032, with the biggest growth driven by the skin-care sector, according to Fortune Business Insights . Much of the momentum is coming from Gen Z. In the U.S., 68% of Gen Z men ages 18 to 27 used facial skin-care products in 2024, a sharp jump from 42% just two years earlier, according to data from market intelligence firm Mintel . "This is no longer niche," said Linda Dang, CEO of Canada-based Asian beauty retailer Sukoshi. "Men are forming routines, that usually starts at skin care and then expands further, they are no longer just buying random products. That's what make...

Welcome to the Wall Street Week newsletter, bringing you stories of capitalism about things you need to know, but even more things you need to think about. I’m David Westin , and this week US diplomat Richard Haass interpreted for us what President Trump is up to in Venezuela, and we looked at how New Zealand farmers have coped since subsidies were cut off decades ago. If you’re not yet a subscriber, sign up here for this newsletter. Haass: Venezuela “Is Not Regime Change” The worlds of diplomacy and politics and punditry were all aflutter this week after the US went into Venezuela to capture President Nicolás Maduro and take him to New York for trial. But as former Council on Foreign Relations head Richard Haass says, when it comes to markets “it’s the dog that didn’t bark in the night.” That doesn’t mean, however, that it necessarily ends there. Haass sees potential ramifications for Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and even Canada down the road. For Haass, it all comes down to an administration that “essentially sees foreign policy more in terms of homeland security and economic welfare.” Which leads us to the primary motivation for President Donald Trump’s actions in Venezuela which, according to Haass, all come down to one thing: oil. Agriculture Without a Lifeline The US has been subsidizing its farmers since FDR’s New Deal, and most other developed nations have done the same thing — with a big exception. Lockwood Smith is a former New Zealand agriculture minister and was a new member of parliament when the government took the bold step of eliminating farm subsidies in the mid-1980s. He recalls that “it was pretty tough going” for New Zealand farmers, but they “toughed it out.” “The improvement in productivity since then has been stunning,” he added. She swept into a sunlit room on the ground floor of Anthropic 's headquarters in December, sat down, and immediately apologized for her mug. "Is my, like, gigantic novelty mug going to be distracting if I have it?" she said. "I'll defer to the wise camera people in terms of what's in the shot." It was a disarming kind of normal for someone operating at this level. Five years ago, she and her brother, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei , led an exodus from OpenAI . They took a core group of senior researchers and started Anthropic with a contrarian bet: That safety and business success weren't in tension, that the real money wasn't in viral consumer products, and that the artificial intelligence race would be won by the company that knew when to slow down. "We really just felt more like we were running towards something than running away from something," Daniela said of the decision to leave. The co-founders had known each other for years before OpenAI. Her brother and co-founders Tom Brown and Chris Olah worked together at Google Brain. Are we in an artificial intelligence bubble? It's the debate that dominated the tech industry in 2025 , and it's not going away anytime soon. Record valuations and deals driven by major investments in artificial intelligence have fueled the AI boom, leaving some to brace for the potential burst. AI leaders like OpenAI and Nvidia have spun an impressive web of staggering deals with cloud infrastructure companies, while hyperscalers including Amazon , Microsoft and Google continue to spend billions on data center buildouts . Although companies are racing to supply the rapidly accelerating AI demand, the enormous debt financing these buildouts have sparked worry that the spending spree may prove to be an overreach. Economic bubbles occur when asset prices in a specific market rapidly rise, often due to speculation or overenthusiasm, followed by a crash when prices suddenly drop. "There's been a lot of talk about an AI bubble," he said. "From our vantage point, we see something very different." Others have been less confident in the stability of the AI surge, including "The Big Short" investor Michael Burry . The fund manager, who rose to fame for predicting the 2008 housing crisis, drew parallels between the current spending euphoria and the dot-com mania of the late 1990s in a lengthy Substack essay. "Sometimes, we see bubbles," Burry wrote in an October X post . "Sometimes, there is something to do about it. Sometimes, the only winning move is not to play." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman ...

Which supermarket marmalades hit preserve perfection and which aren’t worth their rind? • The baking kit the pros can’t live without For this week’s taste test, I asked my old River Cottage colleague, friend and author Pam “the Jam” Corbin for advice. “A truly brilliant marmalade,” she says, “is simply one where the peel, the gel, the texture and indeed the flavour are in harmony. “The amazing and rather magical thing about marmalade,” Pam says, “is that if 100 people made a panful, each one would vary: different sugars, different peel sizes, different boil times and even different water influence the final outcome.” Store-bought products are no different, though most commercially produced marmalades are made with extra pectin, acidity regulators and orange oil, which, while relatively harmless, all affect the taste and texture, and aren’t entirely necessary, either. watch now VIDEO 2:29 02:29 What rebuilding Venezuela's oil fields will mean for ExxonMobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips Oil and Gas Leading U.S. oil executives told President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday that Venezuela will need major reforms to attract investment. Trump said Friday the industry would invest at least $100 billion to rebuild Venezuela's energy sector with U.S. security guarantees. But the CEOs of big oil companies like ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips did not commit at the meeting to quickly re-enter Venezuela. Exxon CEO Darren Woods told Trump that the Venezuelan market is "uninvestable" in its current state. Venezuela seized Exxon's and Conoco's assets in 2007, and Caracas owes the companies billions of dollars in outstanding claims from arbitration cases. "We've had our assets seized there twice, and so you can imagine to re-enter a third time would require some pretty significant changes from what we've historically seen here," Woods told Trump at the White House. "If we look at the legal and commercial constructs and frameworks in place today in Venezuela today, it's uninvestable." Exxon is prepared to send a technical team to evaluate the current state of Venezuela's oil industry and assets, Woods said. ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance congratulated Trump on ousting former President Nicolás Maduro. He said the banking sector will need to help restructure Venezuela's debt and provide billions of dollars in financing for the restore the country's infrastructure. Lance also called for the restructuring of state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). "As we think that big and bold, we need to be also thinking about even restructuring the entire Venezuelan energy system including PDVSA," Lance told the president. Trump told the Conoco CEO that the U.S. government is not looking at recovering the assets the company lost during the 2007 nationalization. The most overbought companies this week reflect investors' rotation away from flashy tech names and into other corners of the market. Major U.S. indexes climbed this week despite fears about elevated geopolitical shocks and stock market valuations. The S & P 500 notched an all-time high on Friday and closed at another record. The tech sector was largely flat on the week, but consumer discretionary and materials saw sharp gains. Given this week's rally, certain stocks have tipped into overbought territory and could see a dip in the near term. CNBC Pro used its stock screener tool to identify the most overbought and oversold stocks as measured by their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI. Those with a 14-day RSI above 70 are considered overbought, meaning that a pullback could be due. A reading below 30 indicates that a stock is oversold and may soon be due for a potential rebound. Take a look below for the market's most overbought and oversold stocks this week. Major American defense contractor L3Harris Technologies made the overbought list with an RSI of 78.2. The stock rose about 10% this week and got a boost after President Donald Trump in a Wednesday Truth Social post called for a $1.5 trillion defense budget in 2027. Shares of L3Harris are up 14% year to date and the stock hit a 52-week high on Friday. The stock could be fairly valued at current levels, however, given that analysts polled by LSEG have a price target on shares that implies less than 0.1% potential upside. Other stocks in overbought territory are Ulta Beauty , Target , Centene and United Parcel Service . Ulta, up 7.4% this week, is trading at all-time high levels back to its market debut in October 2007, according to CNBC data. Oversold stocks we found include Apple , Campbell's and Paramount Skydance . Apple shares saw seven consecutive days of losses between Dec. 30 and Jan. 8. This week, Alphabet's market capitalization overtook Apple's for the first time since 2019. The moves come as Apple ...

The arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) has been a boon for CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) . The AI infrastructure specialist went public at the end of March around $40 per share, and by June, the stock had skyrocketed to a $52-week high of $187. Since then, the company's share price has plunged over 50%, as CoreWeave experienced growing skepticism from Wall Street. The reaction is understandable considering its stock's meteoric rise and sky-high valuation. Does the company's share price decline mean it was caught up in the AI frenzy and its best days are behind it? Or is this a chance to buy at a discount for the opportunistic investor? Let's dive into CoreWeave to arrive at an answer. Continue reading

Goldman Sachs named a group of six stocks that it believes are best positioned this year. The Wall Street investment bank said companies such as Coinbase are compelling, with more room to run. Other buy-rated names screened by CNBC Pro include Mastercard, Visa, MongoDB , Dick's Sporting Goods and Madison Square Garden Entertainment. Madison Square Garden Entertainment The entertainment company and owner of Madison Square Garden is firing on all cylinders following a robust holiday season, according to analyst Stephen Laszczyk. "We believe that the market is currently under-appreciating the opportunity for MSGE..." Goldman wrote. In addition, "the key catalyst in 2026 will likely be movement on the sale of the Theater at MSG related to the Penn Station Transformation Plan, where a developer is expected to be assigned by May 2026," Laszczyk noted, citing the high value of the Madison Square Garden property in New York. Laszczyk also said MSGE's Christmas Spectacular show at Radio City Music Hall displayed strong demand and that booking visibility at The Garden is increasing. Shares of the company are up 60% over the past 12 months and Goldman now has a price target of $60 per share, up from $53 previously. Visa and Mastercard In a recent 2026 outlook, a team led by analyst Will Nance called the two payment companies long term winners. "Fiscal stimulus, easy comps and commercial card adoption [will] sustain [high single digit] global card volume growth," the team wrote. Goldman says both credit card processors are also best positioned for agentic commerce, too. "We see V and MA as particularly well positioned by offering a global payment ecosystem that already has widespread adoption and consumer trust, and believe that V/MA also have numerous opportunities to layer in Value-Added-Services," he said. Shares of both stocks are up around 12% over the past 12 months. Dick's Sporting Goods Shares of the sporting goods chain have plenty more room to run, according to Goldma...
