Indian refiners have bought about 30 million barrels of Russian oil since the US provided a green light for purchases to help the country cope with a shortfall of Middle Eastern supply, according to people with knowledge of the deals. India had been winding down its purchases of Russian oil since last year in response to US pressure, filling the gap with replacement barrels from Saudi Arabia and Iraq — only to find supplies cut off by a widening conflict in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the region’s major producers to the rest of the world, has been effectively closed since US and Israeli strikes on Iran began. Since the US waiver was granted late last week, refiners in the South Asian nation including Indian Oil Corp. and Reliance Industries Ltd. have snapped up all unsold cargoes of Russian crude in the spot market, said the people, asking not too be named as they’re not authorized to speak to media. The oil was loaded but uncommitted, and much of it was already in Asian waters. Russian crude — comprising a broad sweep of grades including Urals, ESPO and Varandey — has been offered at premiums of between $2 and $8 a barrel to London’s Dated Brent benchmark, the people said. Before the war in the Middle East, Russian oil traded at discounts to the same marker. Around 10 million barrels of the Russian crude was bought by state-owned Indian Oil, while Reliance purchased at least as much, the traders said. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the new coverage model known as Better Approaches to Lifestyle and Nutrition for Comprehensive hEalth (BALANCE) in December to lower the costs of GLP-1 drugs. Under the voluntary program, the CMS will negotiate directly with manufacturers of GLP-1 drugs such as Lilly ( LLY ) and Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) so that most beneficiaries in participating Medicare programs will pay as little as $50 for a monthly supply of GLP-1s. Markets across the globe fell on Monday as inflation concerns rose after brent crude futures rose to $119.50 a barrel. Today, brent crude futures tumbled to $89.00, losing about 10%. Oil futures had soared to $119.50 a barrel on Monday. The CAC 40 was up 168.54 points or 2.13% at 8,083.90 a few minutes ago. ArcelorMittal is up more than 5.5%. Societe Generale and STMicroelectronics are gaining 4.7% and 4.5%, respectively. Michelin, BNP Paribas, Schneider Electric, Legrand, Stellantis, Hermes International and Accor are up 3%-3.6%. But when the market starts talking about $200 oil "forever" then it is time to move the higher price-earnings ratio stocks to hold. The same may go for a lot of other stocks in this industry. That is noteworthy even in this frothy market. Even if the Strait of Hormuz stays closed for a year (and that is longer than most are talking about right now), it is still just one year for a nonrecurring event. The oil and gas industry is a very fast-moving industry. Some could be very surprised at the sheer number of shut-in wells that are now profitable to produce at the current oil prices. One can also bet that those wells will again be shut-in as prices inevitably decline to wait for yet another chance to take advantage of "sky-high" oil prices. Probably a good guide here is fiscal year 2022. Those prices lasted about a year, and then prices declined ever since. That meant cost-cutting and economizing wherever possible all the way down to what passed for the present conditions before the Iranian crisis. A general rule of thumb is that commodity stocks are priced at the average income they are expected to earn during the business cycle. Knowing Mr. Market, that expectation tends to get optimistic at the top and pessimistic at the bottom of the business cycle. Chevron stock was doing just fine, given the fact that this firm was earning good money "all the way down" from the high point of fiscal year 2022.
