With the quarterly reporting season kicking off this week, investors would be wise to pay attention to stocks with solid earnings momentum, according to Morgan Stanley. More than a dozen companies in the S & P 500 are slated to post latest quarterly results this week, including financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs and Citigroup . The start of reporting season comes as the broad market index approaches a record high of 7,000, despite political and economic uncertainties continuing to leave investors on tenterhooks. Evaluating the top 1,500 stocks by market capitalization, Morgan Stanley looked for overweight or equal-weight names within the consumer discretionary goods, financials, industrials and health-care sectors that are projected to be in the top quartile for next-twelve-months earnings per share revisions. These are a couple of the companies that made Morgan Stanley's list. Robinhood The financial services app is expected to disclose its fourth-quarter earnings results in early February. And based on the trading platform's previous earnings beat record, investors may be in for a pleasant surprise. Robinhood has topped Wall Street's earnings estimates for the past four consecutive quarters, according to LSEG data. That momentum could carry into Robinhood's next earnings report, particularly as the stock surged more than 200% in 2025, despite facing regulatory headwinds and mounting competition from once crypto-only rivals like Coinbase . Delta Air Lines The airliner reported its financial results for the fourth quarter on Tuesday. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.55, compared to the $1.53 anticipated by analysts polled by LSEG. Revenue for the period landed at $14.61 billion on an adjusted basis, compared to the $14.69 billion anticipated. The stock fell about 3% on Tuesday after the results. Even as the latest report was mixed, CEO Ed Bastian said that earnings could see a jump of more than 20% this year compared to 2025, potentially reaching ...

Attacking Jerome Powell distracts from Republicans’ thin legislative record and policies that continue to squeeze American household incomes The US government’s authoritarian and vexatious attack on Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, should be seen in the light of America’s affordability crisis, which Donald Trump once dismissed, but is now scrambling to claim as his cause. The cost of living is eroding his support ahead of the congressional midterms. By launching a legal assault on the Fed, Mr Trump is trying to shift blame for borrowing costs. Yet despite controlling the presidency, Senate and the House, Republicans have passed little beyond a large tax-cutting bill that benefits the rich. They have not legislated on housing supply, childcare, healthcare costs or wages. Indeed most of their actions are worsening affordability, notably deferring action even though millions face a sharp rise in their health insurance bills . Mr Trump’s sudden enthusiasm for credit card caps and housing interventions is pure opportunism. Continue reading...

It takes a year for some personal independence payment claims to be processed, creating the perfect storm for vulnerable applicants Long delays in processing personal independence payment (Pip) claims have become one of the most damaging and least defensible failures in the UK’s welfare system. Pip is designed to support disabled people with the additional costs of daily living and mobility, yet for many claimants it has instead become a source of prolonged uncertainty, financial hardship and distress. Waiting months – and in some cases more than a year – for a decision can push people into debt, rent arrears and poverty, especially as Pip unlocks other support such as carer’s allowance . Parliament has been sounding the alarm over the scale of the problem – but it appears the Department for Work and Pensions has its fingers in its ears. The stock response is that a new “health transformation programme” will lead to efficiency gains made by replacing paper Pip applications with an online claims system. Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, the chair of the public accounts committee, last week pointed out that MPs had been told “three years ago that improvements would have manifested by now; we are now told that they are a further three years off”. Algorithmic traders have turned bullish on crude oil for the first time since September as US President Donald Trump intensifies his rhetoric against the Iranian government. Trend-following commodity trading advisers, which use computer models to bet on price moves, were about 18% long relative to their maximum possible positions in Brent oil futures on Tuesday, according to data from Bridgeton Research Group. That marks the biggest single-day shift in the robot traders’ wagers since Oct. 10. The rapid flip shows that even as the oil market grapples with a growing supply glut, geopolitical tensions can spark a rally in an instant. Algorithmic traders’ shift has added to upward momentum and comes as other gauges begin to reflect investor expectations of a price surge. Monday saw the busiest-ever session of option trading for Brent crude, the global benchmark, and the premium for bullish bets is the biggest since the US and Israel bombed Iran last June. Read more: What’s at Stake for Oil If Iran Crisis Escalates: QuickTake Brent futures have risen about 9% over the past four sessions, while West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, hit the highest since early November as geopolitical risks swirl from Iran to the Black Sea. Trend-following commodity trading advisers are about 9% long on WTI, compared with 64% short late Monday, Bridgeton said. In a post Tuesday on Truth Social, Trump said he has “cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of protesters stops” and “help is on its way.” He earlier announced a 25% tariff on goods from countries “doing business” with Iran. The Persian Gulf nation is OPEC’s fourth-largest producer, though there are no signs yet that exports have been disrupted. Meanwhile, two oil tankers were attacked near the loading terminal for the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, the latest significant incident complicating Kazakhstan’s crude exports. Energy Aspects, which also tracks commodity trading advisers’ positioning, ...

Wish upon a star ContextLogic is a small company not yet listed on a major stock exchange. What I learned is that has all the themes we follow in this newsletter: public M&A, equity capital markets, private equity, and even private credit and a tax-efficient twist. Five years ago, I tried to order a phone case from Wish.com but instead received in the mail a too-small workout outfit, which, don’t worry, I re-homed with a colleague. The e-commerce snafu was a bit of a harbinger for what would happen with the online-dollar store company, which was sold for a fraction of what it was worth in its heydey to Korean tech company Qoo10. What that fire sale didn’t include were billions in valuable tax-assets, which remained in an orphaned public company called ContextLogic. Enter BC Partners, which tapped its private credit fund with $11 billion under management to take charge of the company and hunt for targets for it. With the tax credits, it can offset $2.9 billion in future income. Ted Goldthorpe, head of BC Partners Credit and chairman of ContextLogic, recounted to investors last month on a conference call that when the firm first got involved, he saw “a blank canvas, a chance to build a strategic acquisition driven compounder with cash and tax attributes from the ground up.” ContextLogic, via BC Partners and Abrams Capital, then pulled off the anchor acquisition late last year by buying an evaporated salt business for $1 billion from Emerald Lake Capital in a deal that was financed by private credit firms. A few days later, Mark...

Given the quick rise, the stock may appear expensive at these levels, especially when you factor in the historical cyclicality in the memory chip market. But Micron is also potentially tapping into an unprecedented opportunity to supply vast amounts of memory capacity for artificial intelligence (AI). Image source: Micron Technology. Spending on AI infrastructure is projected to stretch into the trillions over the long term. As AI workloads shift from training to inferencing , where AI can make predictions from new data, this will require substantial growth in high-capacity, fast memory to handle a larger bandwidth of data processing. Micron expects inferencing to eventually comprise 80% of the AI market. Continue reading
