The yen’s relentless slide in recent days has increased the risks of intervention and a sharp correction, according to Eurizon SLJ Capital and Societe Generale SA. The views emerge as the yen slipped to around 159 per dollar, its lowest level since July 2024, amid a selloff sparked by reports that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may call a snap election. Investors see the move as strengthening the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s grip on power and clearing the way for additional fiscal stimulus — developments viewed as negative for the yen and Japanese government bonds. Risks are “heavily skewed to the downside” for dollar-yen this year, and “interventions at the right moment could trigger such a correction,” Eurizon chief executive Stephen Jen said in a note. That view is echoed by SocGen’s chief FX strategist Kit Juckes , who said a spike in the coming days “may finally be an opportunity to go short” dollar-yen. Some market experts see the 160-per-dollar level as a potential threshold for intervention, though Japanese officials have repeatedly stressed that they are focused more on excessive volatility and the speed of moves rather than on any specific exchange-rate level. There is no set formula for what constitutes overly sharp moves, but one key official indicated in 2024 that a 10-yen move against the dollar over a one-month period would be rapid, and a 4% move in a two-week time span would be inconsistent with fundamentals. Any intervention would be carried out by the Bank of Japan, acting as agent for the Ministry of Finance, which in 2024 had stepped in when the currency slid to about 160.17. “We’re seeing broad demand for options across the curve as the market tries to interpret the price action ahead of a potentially volatile official response,” said Ivan Stamenovic , Hong Kong-based head of Asia-Pacific G-10 currency trading at Bank of America Corp. Speculation that Takaichi, known to support reflationist policies, might discourage the BOJ from a near-ter...

Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korea's president, arrives for a hearing at the Constitutional Court of Korea in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images South Korea's special prosecutor has requested the death penalty for former president Yoon Suk Yeol over his short - lived martial law declaration in 2024. The request came as Yoon's trial wrapped up late Tuesday. The court is expected to deliver its ruling on Feb. 19. Yoon has been charged with leading an insurrection, a crime that is not shielded by presidential immunity and carries the maximum penalty of death. If carried out, it would be South Korea's first execution in almost 30 years. Amnesty International has classified the country as "abolitionist in practice," noting that while South Korea still retains the death penalty, it has not executed anyone since 1997. During the final hearing, special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team said that Yoon declared martial law "with the purpose of remaining in power for a long time by seizing the judiciary and legislature," according to South Korean media reports. Yoon reportedly maintained his innocence, saying the declaration was within his constitutional authority and was intended to "safeguard freedom and sovereignty." At the time, Yoon accused the then - opposition Democratic Party of Korea of engaging in "anti-state activities" and colluding with "North Korean communists." On Dec 3, 2024, Yoon ordered troops to the country's National Assembly after declaring martial law in a late-night address. Soldiers blocked access and clashed with protesters and lawmakers as special forces attempted to enter the chamber. But within three hours, the martial law order was overturned after 190 of the 300 National Assembly lawmakers managed to gather in the chamber and unanimously voted to overturn the decree . Yoon eventually lifted martial law about six hours after announcing it. The last military coup in South Korea occurred in 1979, when the then-army g...

And it’s not just that; there is state terrorism like remote assassinations by drones, which also end up killing a lot of civilian bystanders, not to mention breaching the sovereignty of their countries. The United States can apparently do that anywhere around the world. Such Hollywood-style cowboy militarism no doubt makes its...
