Dazman/E+ via Getty Images China's state-backed iron ore buyer China Mineral Resources Group has told some domestic steelmakers not to engage in discussions with Fortescue ( FSUMF ) about the Australian miner's new low-grade iron ore product, Reuters reported Tuesday. CMRG is in talks with Fortescue ( FSUMF ) over a new term contract, and the negotiations are not progressing well, according to the report. The news has prompted speculation that China could impose a purchasing ban on some Fortescue ( FSUMF ) products as it did during negotiations with BHP that concluded earlier this year . Fortescue ( FSUMF ) reportedly is planning to introduce a new lower-grade iron ore product, known as the Fortune Fines, with first shipments scheduled for July. The miner was expected to finalize a long-term agreement with CMRG in the coming months, with existing short-term arrangements extended while negotiations continue, but any escalation in tensions over Fortune Fines, which has 55% iron content, could complicate efforts to reach a final deal.
