Skild AI Inc. , a fast-rising startup that makes software to help robots learn to complete tasks, has secured about $1.4 billion in a new funding round that values the company at more than $14 billion, more than triple what it was worth just seven months ago. The Series C round was led by SoftBank Group Corp. , with participation from Nvidia Corp. , Macquarie Group Ltd., 1789 Capital and Jeff Bezos’ private investment firm Bezos Expeditions, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Deepak Pathak told Bloomberg. Several previous backers, including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Felicis Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Coatue Management, also joined the round. Other investors included Samsung Electronics Co. , LG Electronics Inc. and Salesforce Inc. To date, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Skild has raised about $2 billion, Pathak said. Last June, it was valued at around $4.5 billion, Bloomberg reported . Founded in 2023, Skild is part of a growing crop of startups that are drawing interest from top investors who are enthusiastic about AI’s potential to improve robotics. Although several robotics firms are focused on specific task areas, Skild is pursuing an AI-powered robotic “brain.” The goal is not to optimize for a single workflow, but to build a system that can adapt across environments and tasks, by training its systems much like humans learn: watching and practicing. “There is no ‘Internet of Robots,’” Pathak said in an interview. “You cannot produce a brain for robots without having data, so this is where we’ve had a main focus from the very beginning, to build a general brain for robotics — one brain for any robot, any task, any scenario.” The Skild Brain software can be loaded onto any standard graphics processing unit without any need for custom architecture, according to Pathak. The software is trained on large libraries of human videos and practicing simulations. Actions and mistakes generate new data in the real world, creating a feedback loop that improves perf...

Neuberger Berman is buying a minority stake in Ryan LLC , valuing the tax advisory and software provider at about $7 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. Neuberger, which will invest $1.2 billion in the company, will be a shareholder alongside Onex Corp. and Ares Management Corp. and receive two board seats, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private. A deal could be announced as soon as Wednesday, according to the people. Representatives for Neuberger and Ryan declined to comment. The deal would allow Ryan to stay private while giving existing owners Onex and Ares a chance to cash out part of their investments and still benefit from future growth. The firm is led by G. Brint Ryan , its founder, chairman and chief executive officer. Based in Plano, Texas, Ryan specializes in tax services and technology for multinational corporations and large enterprises. In particular, the firm offers tax recovery, which involves helping companies reassess taxes in different jurisdictions. It has benefited from rising demand for technology-enabled tax compliance, recovery and consulting services, as tax regimes become more complex globally.

The U.S. Capitol at sunset in Washington, D.C., U.S. December 23, 2025. Tyrone Siu | Reuters Lawmakers could face a ban on buying new stocks under a bill poised to get its first vote Wednesday. But hurdles remain, including opposition from most Democrats who say the bill doesn't go far enough in preventing insider trading among lawmakers. The bill's main backer, Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., chairs the House Administration Committee, which is expected to vote and adopt the measure Wednesday. "Your member of Congress should not be day trading stocks," Steil said in an interview with CNBC. "You want to day trade? There's a place for that and it's called Wall Street." House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., told CNBC that if the bill is approved by committee, he will bring it to the floor for a vote. It's unclear if the bill will be able to pass the full House. House Democratic leadership hasn't weighed in on the bill yet, and members are hoping to offer amendments during Wednesday's markup to strengthen the bill. Read more CNBC politics coverage Sen. The measure would allow members to keep the stocks they owned when they were elected. Members could sell stocks, as long as they gave public notice seven days before the sale. Lawmakers would be able to buy and sell commodities, futures, and diversified funds, and could use dividends of stocks to purchase more shares of stocks they own. Steil's bill would also increase fees for violations, ratcheting up fines to $2,000, or 10% of the value of transaction, whatever is greater, or the net gain from the transactio...

OPEC’s first detailed assessment of 2027 projects that global oil demand will continue to increase at a steady pace. World oil consumption will grow by 1.3 million barrels a day in 2027 — fractionally lower than this year — and average 107.9 million barrels a day, according to a report from OPEC’s secretariat seen by Bloomberg News. The expansion in demand is roughly double the rate of growth in supplies that OPEC projects from its rivals, suggesting that world markets could be tight next year unless the group continues to revive production. However, demand estimates from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries have proven excessively bullish side in the past. In 2024, OPEC slashed demand projections by 32% over the course of six monthly downgrades. In late 2023, it forecast a record inventory deficit that never materialized. Last year, key OPEC+ nations led by Saudi Arabia surprised oil traders by rapidly reviving halted output despite signs that swelling supplies across the Americas meant world markets were comfortably supplied. They have agreed to pause increases during the first quarter, and will review plans for the remainder of the year on a monthly basis. The report showed that production across the OPEC+ coalition declined by 238,000 barrels a day to 42.83 million a day in December, largely because of losses in Kazakhstan. The country’s output fell by 237,000 barrels a day to 1.52 million a day, amid attacks on the the key export terminal for Kazakh crude.

Prime Minister Mark Carney landed in Beijing on Wednesday for the first state visit from a Canadian leader in eight years, as Chinese state media called on Ottawa to lift tariffs on the nation’s exports. Carney is expected to meet with Premier Li Qiang on Thursday and President Xi Jinping on Friday to discuss topics including trade, energy and international security. Beijing will propose easing some restrictions on Canadian rapeseed products if levies are relaxed on Chinese-made electric vehicles, Bloomberg reported . Canada slapped tariffs on Chinese EVs, along with duties on aluminum and steel, in 2024 under former leader Justin Trudeau, in part to align its trade policies with the US. China retaliated by hitting Canadian agricultural products with new levies, including on rapeseed, a key crop that’s known as canola in Canada. “It is also hoped that the Canadian side will translate a correct understanding of China into concrete actions, including lifting unreasonable tariff restrictions and advancing more pragmatic cooperation,” the state-backed Global Times wrote in an opinion piece earlier this week. The editorial also reiterated calls for Ottawa to pursue “ strategic autonomy ” rather than closely aligning itself with US policies. Since taking power last March, Carney has sought to rebuild ties with China after a diplomatic row sparked by Canada’s 2018 arrest of Huawei Technologies Co. executive Meng Wanzhou put relations into a deep freeze . In October, Carney and Xi met during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, which the Canadian leader called “ a turning point in the relationship .” President Donald Trump ’s tariffs, meanwhile, have sparked a sense of urgency in Canada to diversify trade away from America. Carney has set a goal of doubling his country’s non-US exports over the next decade, and China is Canada’s second-largest trading partner after the US. Energy company also under pressure from worse oil trading performance and weaker oil prices Business live – latest updates BP has said it expects to write down the value of its struggling green energy business by as much as $5bn (£3.7bn), as it refocuses on fossil fuels under its new chair, Albert Manifold . The oil company said the writedowns were mostly related to its gas and low-carbon energy divisions in its “transition businesses”, but added that wiping between $4bn and $5bn off their value would not affect its underlying profits when it reports its full-year results in February. UBS believes that Rivian's recent gains have pushed its valuation too high. The bank downgraded the electric vehicle manufacturer to sell from neutral. Analyst Joseph Spak raised his price target to $15 from $13, but that's still about 20% below Tuesday's close. Shares have been on a tear recently, surging more than 43% over the past three months. However, Spak thinks Rivian's risk-reward ratio now appears less favorable, saying the company's current valuation may be too inflated. RIVN 1Y mountain RIVN 1Y chart "RIVN stock has been prone to sentiment swings (often driving stock more than fundamentals) and the stock is +15% since Autonomy and AI Day on Dec. 11 (vs. S & P500 +1%) as the market assigned more enthusiasm to their AI potential. However, in our view, most of the AI related news is 'out,'" he wrote. The analyst also believes that expectations may be too high around the launch of Rivian's R2 vehicle, due in the first half of the year. Spak added that his sales forecasts for 2026 and 2027 are 16% and 19% below consensus. "We believe early customers are likely current RIVN owners or early adopters, and we see risk they wait for the latest and greatest R2 (that may be available ~2 qtrs later)," he clarified. "Further, we see a tougher U.S. [battery electric vehicle] environment with the absence of the EV tax credit and a pull back in regulations, which means R2 will compete against broader ICE/hybrid offerings, not just BEVs." The analyst added that he sees limited autonomous vehicle catalysts in the near term.
