Eight years before he got the call telling him he had won the Stockholm water prize, Prof Kaveh Madani was being interrogated by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, accused of being a spy for the CIA, MI6 or the Mossad. Today he is in exile and on Wednesday won the world’s most prestigious water prize for combining “groundbreaking research on water management with policy, diplomacy and global outreach, often under personal risk and political complexity”. The Iranian scientist says he is “encouraged and humbled” by the award, though the moment is bittersweet. “The sad part is that I don’t know if my compatriots [in Iran] will be celebrating it with me,” he says. “The people who supported me and didn’t give up on me. I don’t even know if they will hear about this because they’re disconnected at the moment.” Madani’s relationship with danger began early. He was six years old when an Iraqi missile struck near his home in Tehran. He was watching television when it hit. “I remember the presenter saying, ‘Dear children …’ and then there was an explosion. Everything went dark.” He describes a four-storey building rising into the air. His mother was bleeding. People were screaming. Decades on, it has not left him. “One of my worst nightmares is still planes attacking and explosions outside our apartment.” He studied civil engineering in Tabriz, then left Iran on an Iranian passport which, he notes, severely limits your options. He ended up in Sweden. “The Swedes were kind to me. Someone at immigration said: ‘OK, this guy is not a terrorist,’ and gave me a visa. That shaped my whole life.” A PhD at University of California, Davis, followed, then a position at Imperial College London, where he built an international reputation modelling water systems. Early in his career he began applying game theory to water management, arguing that conventional models failed because they assumed people would cooperate. His research kept returning to one conclusion: water crises in Iran and other co...

Val Kilmer is set to be the latest Hollywood star to be resurrected by AI. The acting legend, who died last year at age 65, will star in the drama As Deep As the Grave. Kilmer was attached to the project prior to his death from throat cancer. The late actor will play Father Fintan, a Native American spiritualist and Catholic priest. Speaking to Variety, director and writer Coerte Voorhees said that the role was designed around Kilmer, who was an advocate for Native American rights and claimed to have Cherokee heritage. “He was the actor I wanted to play this role,” explained Voorhees. “It drew on his Native American heritage and his ties to and love of the Southwest.” But Kilmer was unable to make it to set due to his battle with throat cancer. The film-maker is working in conjunction with the late actor’s estate and his daughter, Mercedes, to bring Kilmer back to life with state-of-the-art, generative AI. Voorhees says that Kilmer’s son, Jack, an actor who starred alongside Rory Culkin in 2018’s Lord of Chaos, also supports the project. “His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” Voorhees told Variety. “He really thought it was important story that he wanted his name on … Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.” As Deep As the Grave is based on the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, who worked with the Navajo people in the 1920s to uncover North America’s earliest civilization, the Ancestral Puebloan. The film, previously titled Canyon Del Muerto, has been in the works since 2023 with Harry Potter actor Tom Felton set to star as Earl and Bafta winner Abigail Lawrie to play Ann. A supporting cast includes the Oscar winner Wes Studi and actor Jacob Fortune-Lloyd. The AI-generated version of Kilmer will appear in a “significant” portion of the film, says Voorhees. The film will use images of the actor taken throughout his life to re-create K...

Chinese universities that work on government projects have increasingly partnered with European schools in recent years on cybersecurity research, potentially giving China’s military a means of collecting details on high-tech projects, according to a new report. Almost 50 partnerships have been established between universities in China and the European Union since 2000, more than half of them in the last five years, found the report from Natto Thoughts , a group of experts on cybersecurity in China. The academic collaborations often involve exchanges of students doing undergraduate study on subjects such as software engineering, telecommunications, computer science and information security. Some of the Chinese universities involved in the European partnerships are from an elite group, known as the “Seven Sons of National Defense.” Members of that group are approved to conduct top-secret government projects such as classified weapons research and are structurally embedded in China’s military and defense industrial system, according to the report. French institutions have established partnerships with two members of the Seven Sons group and Spain has one such arrangement, the report found. Spain’s Polytechnic University of Valencia is establishing a joint institute with Beijing’s Beihang University in 2026, according to the report. French university group Le Groupe des Écoles Centrales has a partnership with Beihang University on an engineering degree. “Neither the Chinese partners not the French partners are naive about the issues associated with this cooperation,” said a spokesperson for CentraleSupélec, an engineering school that’s part of Le Groupe des Écoles Centrales. “Questions of scientific and technological sovereignty are fully taken into account.” Meanwhile, the Institut Supérieur d’Électronique de Paris and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics have partnered on a dual degree in Software Engineering. Every weekday, the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer holds a "Morning Meeting" livestream at 10:20 a.m. ET. Here's a recap of Wednesday's key moments. 1. Stocks tumbled on Wednesday following hotter-than-expected wholesale inflation data and rising oil prices caused by the Middle East conflict. Brent crude , the international benchmark, crept back up after Iran said some of its energy facilities were attacked and warned of a retaliatory missile strike. Jim Cramer called it a "one-two punch" for stocks, but argued that the market will rebound in the coming days as investors move past the headlines. "I feel a little more bullish than most because I've seen this movie before," he said. 2. Amazon shares shed nearly 2% following a Reuters report that CEO Andy Jassy expects AI to push cloud computing revenues to $600 billion in 10 years, surpassing previous estimates by more than half. Investors aren't loving the news because it could mean a near-term increase in AI spending. Amazon could lower costs in other ways, such as through layoffs, Cramer said. However, any increase in Amazon's capex is a strategic, long-term decision to grow sales of Amazon Web Services, the company's real breadwinner. He added, "We're not in [this stock] for the short term." 3. RBC Capital downgraded Starbucks stock to a hold-equivalent rating from a buy. Analysts pointed to lofty investor expectations for revenue growth and a lack of visibility on cost savings. Cramer described the call as a "hack downgrade," arguing that the coffee retailer's turnaround plan under CEO Brian Niccol remains on track. Shares are down over 2%. 4. Stocks covered in Wednesday's rapid fire at the end of the video were: Lululemon Athletica , General Mills , Williams-Sonoma , Constellation Brands , and Disney . lcva2 Following an artificial intelligence-themed survey with 30 chief information officers, investment firm Jefferies said Microsoft ( MSFT ), Snowflake ( SNOW ), and Oracle ( ORCL ) are its top picks in enterprise software. “The survey respondents cited a weighted average of 8.7% of total IT budget allocated to AI tools/features, with 63% operating with a dedicated AI budget,” analysts at the firm wrote in a note to clients. “This is consistent with rising prioritization of AI initiatives as enterprises shift from experimentation to deployment.” Additionally, the survey found that hyperscalers and foundation model labs are likely to be the biggest beneficiaries of artificial intelligence, perhaps unsurprisingly. “When asked which providers stand to gain the most from increasing AI adoption, unsurprisingly cloud service providers (Amazon, Microsoft, Google, etc.) ranked #1 with 33% of respondents choosing that category, followed closely by foundation model labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) at 30%,” analysts at the firm added. “Application software vendors ranked third, ahead of data platforms and AI startups (like Sierra AI and Glean). In our view, this highlights that current investor fears about disintermediation of incumbent apps by AI startups may be overblown, with scale, data and distribution serving as defensible moats.” Adobe and Docusign at risk? Conversely, the investment firm said Adobe ( ADBE ) and Docusign ( DOCU ) are the two companies most at risk from AI, according to the survey. Forty percent of respondents said Docusign and Adobe are most at risk of being displaced by AI in the next 5 years, while HubSpot ( HUBS ) followed behind, at 33%. “We see this to be more a gauge of CIO sentiment in terms of AI positioning, and continue to believe that all incumbents have the opportunity to innovate and emerge as AI winners,” the analysts added. “Notably, infrastructure vendors screened with minimal displacement risk, supporting the view that platform layers r...

Brazil’s Treasury is stepping into markets for a third straight day, counting on a record intervention to contain volatility triggered by a surge in oil prices amid escalating tensions around the war in Iran. The Treasury bought back 7.6 million fixed-rate bonds on Wednesday, extending a series of operations carried out since the start of the week. It did not accept any offers in the latest auctions to sell those same securities. Officials are closely monitoring market conditions and could step in again if volatility persists, a person with knowledge of the matter said, asking not to be named discussing private details. The interventions, which have already totaled about 49.1 billion reais ($9.4 billion), come amid a sharp selloff across risk assets. The surge in oil — Brent was trading near $109 a barrel on Wednesday, from around $70 at the end of February — has forced investors to rethink their outlook for interest rates and global growth. The shift is casting a cloud over emerging-market local bonds, one of Wall Street’s favored trades for 2026. Read more: Oil Shock Upends Emerging Bond Bets as Rate Hikes Loom “This is exactly the type of opportunity where intervening makes sense, as a reaction to external shock, not to the long-term fundamentals of Brazil specifically,” said Olga Yangol , head of emerging markets research and strategy at Credit Agricole. The Treasury’s actions this week — the first buyback intervention since December 2024, when it stepped in to assuage a selloff in local markets driven by fiscal concerns — initially helped stabilize markets. Swaps contracts, the so-called DIs, fell in the first two days of interventions. But the relief proved short-lived and by late Tuesday, rates were climbing again after local media reported that truck drivers were organizing a nationwide strike in response to rising diesel prices, adding a fresh layer of uncertainty. They were also slightly up on Wednesday. Read More: Brazil Acts to Avert Truckers Strike as O...

Earnings Call Insights: General Mills, Inc. (GIS) Q3 2026 Management View CEO Jeffrey Harmening stated the company is positioned to deliver a "significant step-up in financial performance, which will start in our fourth quarter," and reaffirmed guidance for fiscal 2026. He emphasized the strategic decision to reinvest in brand remarkability, acknowledging the near-term impact on results but highlighting progress on "household penetration, improved baseline volume, distribution and market shares." Harmening indicated that "most of the reinvestment phase [is] behind us," setting expectations for improved performance. Harmening announced the agreement to sell the Brazil business, including the Yoki and Kitano brands, and described this as part of a broader portfolio-shaping discipline. He said the deal "will enhance our margins and increases the International segment's focus on our key global platforms, including super-premium ice cream, Mexican food, snack bars and pet food, where we have stronger margin and excellent growth prospects." On strategic priorities for fiscal 2027, Harmening stated, "our #1 goal is going to be to continue to improve our organic sales results, while at the same time, maintaining our industry-leading HMM as well as the transformation initiative." CFO Kofi Bruce explained, "We are in the middle of a multiyear transformation initiative, which I would expect next year on top of this year will add meaningfully to productivity." Outlook Management reaffirmed guidance for fiscal 2026 and expects to deliver "meaningful better top line and bottom line performance in Q4 and beyond." Harmening indicated the company will focus on "increasing our dollar share competitiveness across NAR as we have done in the other 3 segments" for fiscal 2027. Bruce said, "implied in the annual guidance is probably about 75 basis points, 80 basis points at the midpoint of organic sales growth" and expects "continued competitiveness" in the company's segments. He noted a ...

Palantir's 2025 Commercial Revenue Soars 109% as AI Platform Drives Expansion According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Palantir Technologies has posted robust quarterly results, marked by significant revenue increases and record contract levels. The company's expansion is now being notably driven by its commercial segment, particularly within the United States. For the full year of 2025, Palantir's U.S. commercial revenue reportedly grew by 109% compared to the prior year, reaching a total of $1.5 billion. This performance outpaced the growth of its U.S. government business, which increased by 55% to $1.9 billion for the same period. This shift indicates the firm's software is gaining adoption across various private-sector industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and energy. AI Platform Fuels Expansion The company's growth is linked to its Artificial Intelligence Platform, known as AIP. This platform is designed to help businesses integrate artificial intelligence tools directly into their operational workflows. Organizations are reportedly moving from initial AI experimentation to broader deployment, using the software to manage supply chains, analyze operations, and automate decisions within a single environment. While government contracting remains a core part of Palantir's operations, the accelerated expansion of its commercial business represents a significant development for the enterprise software company.

Name: French Sunday. Age: As a viral happiness trend, quite new. As an idea, quite old. Old Testament, even … I’m thinking there’s a Bible quote coming. “Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” Why French Sunday, though? And anyway, wouldn’t that be Dimanche? First, well remembered. Second, no – in the same way as le pain grillé isn’t french toast but French for toast, got it? Not really. So what’s French about French Sunday? It’s inspired by the country and its people. I thought France was a staunchly secular nation? True, though heavily influenced by Catholicism. But – though it comes into it – French Sundays aren’t just days of rest. Still confused. It’s more a state of mind. A French state of mind? Exactly that: it’s about finding your inner Frenchness, on a Sunday. So maybe I’ll get up late, have a coffee and a pastry, read a little Proust, then spend the afternoon listening to jazz and making love … Perfect! In fact, all of the above are on the list. List? Vogue has compiled a helpful one on how to adopt the French Sunday. What else is on it? “Find a pretty view, sit down, and let your thoughts flow.” What if my thoughts turn to the presentation I’ve got to make on Tuesday? That’s what you need to avoid – work, planning, productivity. Go on, what else? “Cook something that takes for ever, like a whole roasted chicken with lemon …” Is the lemon important? Essential. Also flâner … Excuse me? Is that how to cook the chicken? No, it means to stroll aimlessly; you can do that while the chicken cooks. Alternatively: “Visit a museum. Study each painting, sculpture or exhibit without the need to figure anything out.” And is this really what the French do? So, traditionally shops are closed, even if this is changing. And they do take their Sundays seriously. “There was a heist at the Louvre – on a Sunday morning, while the country was still asleep,” Céline Kaplan, a PR for French cli...
