China Vanke Co. won enough creditor backing to extend payments on a yuan bond for a year, after it sweetened an earlier proposal with an upfront cash payment, easing the embattled developer’s risk of an imminent default. According to a filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, 92.11% of holders who exercised a put option on Vanke’s 1.1 billion yuan ($158 million) bond voted in favor of the revised extension plan. Under the proposal , Vanke would repay 40% of the 1.03 billion yuan owed to those investors. The builder will make the payment on Jan. 30. It would delay repaying the rest of that amount until Jan. 22 next year. The approval gives Vanke, one of China’s last major developers to so far avoid debt failure, some breathing room as it strains under the weight of $50 billion of interest-bearing liabilities amid an unprecedented real estate market slump. It’s also a sign that holders of two other bonds originally due last month may be receptive to similar proposals the company made for those notes. Holders of those bonds are set to vote on the proposals later this month. Vanke’s dollar bonds and yuan notes jumped last week after the builder announced revisions to its extension proposals. Both of its dollar bonds were trading around 23 cents on the dollar on Tuesday, reflecting continuing investor concerns about Vanke’s ability to deal with future debt obligations, with more maturities looming later this year. The government, meanwhile, has asked Vanke, which has nearly $50 billion in interest-bearing liabilities, to come up with a comprehensive restructuring plan , potentially with deep haircuts for creditors. Vanke had told some bondholders in private conversations that if creditors approve the sweetened proposals, the builder would be able to make the payments, people familiar with the matter said earlier. It’s still unclear where Vanke would get the funds for the cash payments. The company rushed to find cash to meet bond repayments in December after state‑owned sh...

Liquidity in Japan’s government bond market has deteriorated to record levels amid this week’s sharp selloff, underscoring what many see as a buyers’ strike that has sent super-long yields soaring. The JGB Liquidity Index — which gives an indication of how much JGB yields deviate from levels that would be expected with ample liquidity — climbed to a record high on Tuesday. The gauge has been rising steadily since early last year, when volatility in the JGB market began to increase amid mounting fiscal concerns. That fragility was laid bare after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ’s election pledge to cut food taxes triggered a surge in long-end yields. Japan’s 30- and 40-year bond yields jumped more than 25 basis points to fresh highs, with the move spilling into global markets. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama called on market participants to calm down, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he had spoken with Katayama and acknowledged that the moves were affecting the Treasury market. The selloff forced some hedge funds to unwind losing positions, pushed life insurers to dump bonds, and caused at least one corporate bond investor to pull out of a multi-million dollar deal, Bloomberg News reported . The recent turmoil in JGBs reflects “dysfunction in a thin and fragile segment of the ultra-long end of the curve,” Bloomberg’s Japan economist Taro Kimura wrote in a note Wednesday. These bonds trade in illiquid conditions and are dominated by a narrow base of institutional investors, such as life insurers, while reduced purchases by the Bank of Japan — once a key buyer — have added to the market’s fragility. Japanese insurers sold a record amount of the nation’s super-long bonds last month, according to data from the Japan Securities Dealers Association. The concern is no longer simply that yields are high, but that when they rise, there may be no natural buyer left to absorb selling pressure. Meanwhile, the nature of risk in Japan’s bond market is being reshaped...
