Some of India’s biggest money managers are buying more riskier short-term company debt, expecting spreads to shrink from their widest level in over five years. Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management Co. is increasing allocations to bonds rated AA and A due in one to three years, while Axis Asset Management Co. also plans to gradually double holdings of such notes to 20%-25% in its strategic bond fund. The yield premium between AA rated three-year corporate securities and similar-maturity government debt expanded to 192 basis points this week. That’s the biggest since July 2020 and came after banking system liquidity dwindled because of forex interventions by the central bank to support a weakening rupee. Some money managers expect credit premiums to shrink in the near term due to forecasts for the central bank to pump more liquidity into the banking system. Should that come to pass, it would potentially allow holders of riskier notes to profit from juicy yields as well as capital gains. The wider spreads don’t signal concern about the health of India’s economy or its companies, as corporate leverage has declined and bad loans at banks are at multi-decade lows, according to fund managers. “We have gone down the curve because we think credit cycle is not showing any kind of stress,” said Devang Shah , head of fixed income at Axis Asset. “On a risk adjusted perspective, AA asset gives you a good cushion as well as a good value.” Ratings on rupee corporate bonds assigned by Crisil Ratings, a unit of S&P Global Inc., range from AAA — the highest level of safety — to D, which denotes default.
