After Trump Meeting, Slovak PM Fico Says 'EU Is Not Taken Seriously' By World Leaders Authored by Thomas Brooke via Remix News, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said the European Union is “not taken completely seriously” by world leaders because of its “suicidal migration policy” and “nonsense climate goals,” after a phone call on Monday with German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to the government’s press office, cited by the TASR news agency , Fico told Merz that he would send an open letter on Tuesday to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and circulate it to all EU prime ministers and heads of state, in which he would express concerns relayed to him following a meeting with U.S. President Trump at the weekend and offer solutions. “I have proposed several solutions to the Federal Chancellor, and I hope that he will visit Slovakia soon, as he promised. We have something to talk about,” Fico said. He added that several hundred German companies operate in Slovakia and that the Slovak economy is particularly dependent on German economic development because of the high concentration of car production. Fico said he and Merz discussed the current “serious international situation,” including the escalating transatlantic tensions over the future of Greenland, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He told the German chancellor about his conversation over the weekend with U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. “The U.S. president is clearly pursuing the nation-state interests of the U.S. If the EU had acted this way, we would be in a completely different place than we are now,” Fico said, again arguing that the European Union is not taken seriously on the world stage. 🇺🇸🇪🇺 EPIC phone call between Slovakia's PM Fico with Germany's Merz, after Fico met Trump. Pair will face off in NFC South next season Stefanski reportedly said QB ‘failed’ with Browns Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield has vented his frustrations over the treatment he received from his former head coach Kevin Stefanski, who he will now face twice a year as an opponent. Stefanski was Mayfield’s head coach at the Browns before Cleveland traded the quarterback to the Carolina Panthers in 2022. The two are now in the NFC South after Atlanta hired Stefanski on Saturday. Mayfield appeared to be angered after an Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter posted that Stefanski said Mayfield and another Browns quarterback, Deshaun Watson, had “failed” in Cleveland. President-elect José Antonio Kast surprised Chile’s mining industry by folding mining into the economy ministry, abandoning plans to appoint a former BHP Group executive as a standalone mining minister. At a ceremony late Tuesday, Kast named Daniel Mas as minister overseeing both portfolios. Earlier in the day, Canada-based Los Andes Copper Ltd. had said its Chief Executive Officer Santiago Montt was stepping down to take up the mining post, confirming multiple media reports that he had been selected. The last minute change followed concerns within Kast’s team that the company announcement was premature and reflected poor judgment, according to a person familiar with the deliberations. Montt, who didn’t respond to requests for comment, was seen as someone with the first-hand knowledge of Chile’s permitting challenges to implement Kast’s pledges to accelerate projects and reignite growth in copper production. Mining association Sonami was among those pushing for a single ministry to give Chile’s most important industry maximum attention. “Clearly the dual ministry was to the detriment of mining,” Juan Ignacio Guzman, head of mineral consulting firm GEM, said Wednesday. Kast will be sworn in on March 11. “Let’s see what happens — having mining as part of a more powerful ministry could help raise the industry’s profile at the top levels of government,” said Plusmining founder Juan Carlos Guajardo. Before working at Los Andes Copper, Montt oversaw corporate affairs at BHP Minerals Americas for more than a decade. In Tuesday’s statement, Los Andes Copper had said Montt would remain at the company until Feb. 19 with Antony Amberg replacing him on an interim basis.
