In February, Amazon plans to roll out a much-needed revamp of Fire TV OS, one that seemingly takes a cue from Google’s TV platform. The forthcoming UI redesign will introduce better organization, support for Alexa Plus, and quicker performance to the aging OS, the latter of which has been a crux of the platform’s issues for years. Collectively, the changes make it a lot easier to recommend the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus , which is on sale at Woot through January 23rd for an all-time low of $18.39 ($32 off) when you use code DEVICES20 at checkout. Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus Where to Buy: $49.99 $18.39 at Woot (with code DEVICES20) $49.99 $34.99 at Amazon $49.99 $34.99 at Best Buy The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus — formerly known as the “Fire TV Stick 4K,” which is how Woot refers to it here — sits in the middle of Amazon’s lineup of 4K-ready streaming devices. It packs twice as much RAM as the newer “Select” model and supports an array of HDR and surround sound formats, including HDR10 Plus, Dolby Vision, DTS, and Dolby Atmos. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can also use it to stream select titles from the cloud, and, as expected, you can use it to watch the newest movies and TV shows from Prime Video, HBO Max, Netflix, and dozens of FAST (Free Ad-Supported TV) channels in HD or 4K. As for the hardware itself, the latest Fire TV Stick 4K comes with an Alexa Voice Remote, which allows you to quickly access your favorite streaming apps and Amazon’s ubiquitous voice assistant with the press of a button. Alexa lets you adjust various Fire TV settings, including the volume and input, but with Alexa Plus, you’ll soon be able to get stats on your favorite sports team, jump between iconic scenes, and carry out a host of more advanced actions using your voice. It’s a step in the right direction, even if our experience has been mixed thus far. More deals and discounts of note The Instant Pot Duo , a Verge -approved gizmo that often finds its way into our gift guides , is on sale at Amazon ri...

Financial markets were kicked into high-gear this week by President Donald Trump ’s unorthodox approach to geopolitics and old-school electioneering in Japan. Trump threatened to launch a new trade war against European allies over his demand that Denmark cede control of Greenland to the US, only to quickly back down. In Japan, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi helped roil markets with an election pitch to cut taxes despite the country’s sizable debt burden and elevated inflation. The result: multiple headline-grabbing trades racked up swift returns or losses. What follows is an alphabetized rundown of the history, current state and possible future of some of the most-popular market strategies. ‘Basis Trade’ A widely deployed hedge-fund strategy with a history of occasionally blowing up, it has gained attention in recent years. It involves borrowing money — typically in the repo market — and then buying or selling bonds while simultaneously taking the opposite position in futures. The tactic seeks to profit from the tiny price discrepancies between the two markets. Proponents argue that the strategy provides an important source of demand for government bonds at a time when debt is surging across developed markets. But the trade is highly risky. Because the price differences are extremely small, investment firms have to leverage the trades through significant borrowing to amplify returns enough to make it worthwhile. (It has been likened to picking up pennies in front of a slow-moving steamroller.) That leverage and the trade’s reliance on short-term funding have periodically raised concerns among policymakers and regulators. The exact size of the basis trade is difficult to gauge, a lack of transparency that itself alarms policymakers. In January, Morgan Stanley estimated that the US basis trade had grown by roughly 75% since 2019, reaching about $1.5 trillion. ‘Bond Steepener’ Long-dated bonds are making investors jittery again due to swelling government debt loads glob...

House Republicans Pass Reconciliation Bill Banning Welfare For Illegal Aliens Via American Greatness , House Republicans passed a sweeping new framework for a second reconciliation bill that would ban illegal aliens from receiving a single dime from taxpayer-funded federal welfare programs. The proposal, which was led by the Republican Study Committee (RSC) also seeks to reform federal funding allocations to states , ensuring that taxpayer funds are spent solely on U.S. citizens. Congressman Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) emphasized the urgency of the reconciliation bill during a press conference earlier today, saying, “Republicans in Congress can and must go it alone with the second reconciliation bill.” 🚨 BREAKING: House Republicans just filed a new reconciliation bill BANNING illegals from obtaining a dime of taxpayer welfare Only 51 votes required in the Senate! GET THIS DONE 🔥 It also: - Ensures only citizens count for purposes of allocating funding to states - Cracks… pic.twitter.com/EK1HVt8rDx — Eric Daugherty (@EricLDaugh) January 13, 2026 Hamadeh spoke of how the framework “is all about making life affordable again for the American people” and seeks to put the American worker first. He added, “ It prevents illegal immigrants from obtaining all government handouts, cracks down on rampant fraud like the abuse and mess that we’ve seen in Democrat states like Minnesota, and reforms funding so only citizens count when they’re doling out federal funds to the states.” The Arizona congressman also noted that he and his colleagues “didn’t run for office to continue the status quo” and described the primary goals of the measure, saying, “This is our moment to flip the script, restore balance for the American people, and put power back in your hands—not bureaucrats, foreign nationals, or illegal immigrants.’ The measure only requires a simple majority of 51 votes in the U.S. Senate in order to pass. The emphasis on prioritizing American citizens in federal spending could spell bu...

Ars readers of a certain age no doubt remember the 1980s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series (and its spinoff, She-Ra: Princess of Powers ) and the many, many offshoots of this hugely popular Mattel franchise , including an extensive line of action figures. Amazon MGM Studios no doubt hopes to cash in on any lingering nostalgia with its forthcoming film, Masters of the Universe. Judging by the extended teaser trailer, we're getting an origin story for He-Man. It's not the first time someone has turned He-Man into a feature film: Dolph Lundgren starred in 1987's Masters of the Universe , a critical and box office bomb that also featured Frank Langella as arch-villain Skeletor. Its poor reception might have stemmed from the 1987 film deviating significantly from the original cartoon, angering fans. But frankly, it was just a bad, cheesy movie, though it still has its share of cult fans today. This latest big-screen live-action adaptation has been languishing in development hell for nearly two decades. There were rumors in 2007 that John Woo would direct a He-Man feature for Warner Bros., but the project never got the green light. Sony Pictures gained the rights in 2009, and there were multiple script rewrites and much shuffling of possible directors (with John Chu, McG, and David S. Goyer among the candidates).
