China’s biggest electric-vehicle battery-maker, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. , is planning to set up a new unit to ensure its supply-chain security and stability. The company said its board has approved a plan to set up a new unit with a registered capital of 30 billion yuan ($4.4 billion), according to a statement Wednesday. The business scope includes mineral resources exploration, metals processing, and sales of chemical products. The unit will serve as a management and operation platform in the new-energy mining sector, CATL said in the statement. It will integrate existing mining-related assets, and “actively” expand into domestic and international resource projects. Bloomberg News reported last week that CATL has also tapped the founder and ex-chairman of Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd. as an advisor for its growing mining business, according to people familiar with the matter. In a separate statement Wednesday, CATL posted a 49% jump in net income in the first quarter to 20.7 billion yuan, beating analysts’ estimates. Revenue reached 129 billion yuan, up 52% from a year ago, the company said.

Hispanolistic | E+ | Getty Images This season, the IRS is smaller after staffing cuts from Elon Musk 's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, and other 2025 reductions . As millions of filers race to meet the April 15 tax deadline , they may wonder if being picked for an IRS audit is now less likely amid the agency's trimmed workforce . As of Dec. 18, the IRS was about 27% smaller compared to the start of 2025, with the workforce falling from more than 102,000 in January 2025 to about 74,000 in December, according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. That won't necessarily reduce your audit risk, experts say. There are "various ways" IRS enforcement touches taxpayers, such as automated math error notices , the agency's matching program for tax forms , exams by mail and in-person field audits, according to Eric Hylton, national director for tax consulting firm Alliantgroup. And certain issues can be "low-hanging fruit" for an audit, even with staffing cuts, said Hylton, who is also a former IRS commissioner for the agency's small business and self-employed division. JHVEPhoto Broadcom's ( AVGO ) deal with Meta Platforms ( META ) to provide the Facebook parent with help developing its artificial intelligence chips, known as Meta Training and Inference Accelerators, was praised by Wall Street, as analysts sounded increasingly confident about Broadcom's future. Broadcom shares rose more than 2% in premarket trading on Wednesday. “The Meta agreement includes an initial commitment exceeding 1GW of deployment in 2027, representing the first phase of a sustained, multi-gigawatt rollout over time,” J.P. Morgan analyst Harlan Sur wrote in a note to clients. “We expect the first gigawatt of MTIA deployment to occur in 2027, implying $12–$15B of revenue opportunity for Broadcom (including networking), and we believe this further reinforces our conviction that Broadcom can significantly exceed $120B+ of AI revenues in FY27.” Sur added that the multi-year nature of the deal is a sign that Broadcom will keep benefiting from the “accelerating shift” toward custom chip designs from hyperscalers as they seek to boost performance and efficiency and lower costs. Sur has an Overweight rating and a $500 price target on Broadcom. Under the deal, Broadcom will deliver technology supporting Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) chips through 2029. The initial commitment is more than 1GW and is coming in 2027. Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers said the deal “reaffirms” Broadcom's commentary when it reported its fiscal first-quarter results. “We see the announcement and initial commitment of >1GW as both expected and positive with a long roadmap and a multi-GW rollout,” Rakers posited. “The multi-GW roadmap and explicit commitment to use AVGO across design, packaging, and networking show Broadcom integrating deeper into the AI stack across the industry. Meta will begin deploying four new MTIA generations in two years. We continue to expect hyperscalers to leverage a multi-vendor accelerator strategy.” Rakers, who has an Overweight rating and $43...

Niche chip equipment maker Aixtron SE is cementing its place as the new artificial intelligence darling of Europe’s stock market. Shares in the German company surged as much as 17%, to an almost 25-year high, after it raised full-year guidance, citing strength in the optoelectronics business. Aixtron makes tools for the production of compound semiconductors, which are used in AI infrastructure because they handle power more efficiently than traditional silicon chips. Investors have been getting more bullish on Aixtron for the past six months, betting that its specialist machines will become increasingly important as companies build out AI networks. Aixtron now expects full-year revenue to reach as much as €590 million ($695 million), up from its previous top-end forecast of €550 million, after “significantly stronger-than-expected” demand for its products in the first quarter. Read more: Niche Chip Stock Emerges as Europe’s Next Big AI Power Play “We have the tool of record for the next generation of photonic components, which are the basis for chip-to-chip, rack-to-rack and datacenter-to-datacenter communications in the AI era,” Aixtron Chief Executive Officer Felix Grawert said in a statement . The rally, which gives Aixtron a market capitalization of €4.6 billion, marks a big change from recent years, when the company’s exposure to industrial and automotive markets were seen as a weakness. The shares fell more than 60% in 2024 before starting to turn around last year with a 14% rally. The recent gains have left the shares trading at a forward price-earnings ratio above 50, double the five-year average. For some analysts, the multiple is now too high to recommend buying the stock. “We continue to believe that the stock’s demanding valuation already reflects much of the medium-term growth,” Deutsche Bank AG analyst Michael Kuhn wrote on Wednesday, maintaining a hold rating. Still, analysts remain largely positive. The stock has eight buy ratings, eight holds and tw...
