The next time you're dealing with a Social Security Administration employee, you may want to be extra kind. They're working under tremendous pressure with little reward. It was during the 43-day government shutdown in the fall of 2025 that an issue affecting many Social Security Administration (SSA) employees came to light. The majority of Social Security employees are categorized as "essential employees," meaning they had to report to work, even though they were not being paid. While higher-paid employees might have been able to get through those 43 days by withdrawing money from an emergency fund, others live too close to the edge to build a substantial emergency fund. Reports of evictions, car repossessions, and employees going without purchasing groceries became common. What an investigation found In response to news of economic struggles among Social Security workers, the Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) -- a U.S. labor coalition of unions -- decided to conduct an analysis of how much money more than 36,000 SSA frontline workers earn. The analysis found that among SSA workers represented by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), more than half (54%) are paid less than a living wage. "Living wage" refers to the minimum income a full-time employee needs to cover housing, healthcare, food, transportation, and other basic necessities. Depending on where an employee lives, the living wage can vary dramatically. In other words, 54% of full-time SSA employees don't earn enough to pay for necessities in their area. Compounding the issue, among those who have at least one dependent, 75% of SSA employees reported being the primary income earner in their households. While they work with retirees every day, these are people who might find it particularly difficult to plan for their own retirement. Budget Time India’s somewhat tenuous place in global investor portfolios will be up for review this week, as a slew of data between today and Sunday will indicate if Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government can sustain higher growth while maintaining budget discipline. The country is the world’s fastest growing (7.4%) amongst major economies, but tax cuts have constrained spending in the ongoing fiscal year as the government remains committed to lowering the budget gap to a targeted 4.4% of GDP. That pressure will ease somewhat next year (FY27) with a shift from narrowing the deficit to debt targeting, but gross borrowings are expected to remain high on account of debt redemption. Modi’s challenge will be to shore up revenue and maintain infrastructure spending that can continue to crowd in private investment, which is showing some green shoots of recovery. He also needs to find budget room for subsidies and social-sector spending to support an uneven recovery in consumption, while providing targeted relief to exporters impacted by US tariffs and China dumping. The fiscal math will also be impacted by any shift in revenue share between the center and states as determined by the 16th Finance Commission, whose recommendations have yet to be made public, and salary hikes for government employees that are yet under consideration but may need to be provided for in the budget. Amex is a fairly cheap-looking stock, but concerns about caps on interest rates could limit its gains. One of the best financial stocks to own in recent years has been American Express (AXP 0.68%). The company is a top credit card issuer and caters to an affluent customer base that's been willing to spend heavily, even amid inflation and growing economic concerns. The stock is up over 210% in just the past five years, which is far better than the S&P 500's gains of around 81% in the same period (returns are as of Jan. 27). For investors, the inevitable concern after such a strong rally is whether the stock is still a good buy or has gotten too expensive. Let's take a look at Amex's fundamentals and overall valuation to see if this is a stock that's still worth buying today. The company's growth rate has been declining but remains positive In previous years, Amex was growing much faster than it is now. But with the company still generating growth around the double digits, it seems to be doing well, even while other businesses are struggling. It shows excellent resilience. Amid more favorable economic conditions, the company's growth may accelerate.
