Last year saw a record 356 people put to death in the country. “I was always thinking about the day he would come back,” she says. “I was going to take him around in the car and show him all the places he once knew. I was planning to buy a new dress for that day too.” Shazly had been found in the Red Sea off the west coast of Saudi Arabia near a floating car tyre that officials say contained amphetamine pills, opium and heroin. His mother says he had been thrown into the water by smugglers. “He thought it was a minor issue and just prison. Donald Trump’s mass pardoning of those convicted in connection to the January 6 insurrection raised eyebrows last year, but more recently his pardons have appeared to have a particular focus: to grant clemency to those convicted of fraud. Since taking office, Trump has pardoned dozens of people convicted of white-collar crimes, including several billionaires, with most of the 13 pardons he quietly issued this month granting clemency to people convicted of fraud. Those include Wanda Vázquez Garced, the former governor of Puerto Rico who pleaded guilty last year to a campaign finance violation. The US Department of Justice said Vázquez took hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from a Venezuelan, Julio Herrera Velutini, and Mark Rossini in exchange for firing a federal official investigating a bank owned by Herrera Velutini. Trump pardoned Herrera Velutini and Rossini, who were both convicted of wire fraud, along with Vázquez. Herrera Velutini’s daughter, Isabel Herrera, donated $2.5m to the pro-Trump political action committee Maga Inc, and another $1m in July 2025, CBS News reported. A White House official told CBS News the pardons and donations were unrelated. Another pardon this month was given to a woman to whom Trump had granted clemency during his first term. Adriana Camberos had a fraud-related sentence commuted by Trump in 2021 after being convicted as part of an elaborate fake 5-hour Energy Drink scheme. In 2024, she and her brother were convicted in a separate fraud case which involved the pair lying to manufacturers to buy groceries at discount prices, before selling them at a profit. Health care technology startup Tandem Technology Inc. , which aims to smooth the process of writing and receiving medical prescriptions using artificial intelligence, has reached a valuation of $1 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. The company is raising $100 million in the deal, which is being led by venture capital firm Accel, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Tandem is building technology to help patients get access to medicines. The startup’s tech, free to providers and patients, automates the paperwork and phone calls behind prior authorizations and pharmacy routing. The New York-based startup is also backed by top VC firms Thrive Capital and General Catalyst. It’s raised $137 million to date, including the latest Series B funding, according to one of the people. General Catalyst led Tandem’s $30 million Series A round in 2024, the person said. Tandem hasn’t publicly announced any fundraises. Representatives for Tandem didn’t respond to a request for comment. Tandem ultimately wants to partner with biopharma companies to speed up the development and launch of new drugs. Before a company reports earnings, implied volatility is usually high because the market is unsure about the outcome of the report. Speculators and hedgers create huge demand for the company’s options which increases the implied volatility, and therefore, the price of options.
