Ernest Kung/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images New Zealand is preparing a multibillion-dollar military upgrade, reflecting growing concern over China’s expanding presence in the Pacific and a more volatile global security environment, The Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday. The government plans to spend about $7 billion on new capabilities, including helicopters, missiles, surveillance drones and base upgrades, while also boosting recruitment to address personnel shortages. The push follows a Chinese naval deployment last year that conducted live-fire exercises near Australia and New Zealand, underscoring how far Beijing’s military reach has extended. Officials say the buildup is part of a broader reassessment among Western-aligned nations as geopolitical tensions intensify, including the war in Ukraine. A stronger New Zealand presence in the South Pacific is expected to support regional monitoring efforts and complement U.S. and Australian operations, particularly in safeguarding shipping routes and countering Chinese influence. Despite its relatively small force, New Zealand plays a strategic role through its large maritime zone and intelligence ties with allies. However, the plan has sparked debate at home, where economic pressures and close trade ties with China complicate defense spending decisions. Military funding is set to rise from just over 1% of GDP to more than 2% in the coming years, alongside plans to add roughly 2,500 personnel. Officials say the changes reflect a simple reality: even distant nations are no longer insulated from global conflict. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News The senior leaders of Meta Platforms ( META ) stand to earn hundreds of millions of dollars if they help the company reach a $9 trillion valuation in the next five years. In SEC filings disclosed late Tuesday, the company awarded new stock options to its seven main executives, excluding CEO Mark Zuckerberg, which are exercisable only if the company's stock price surges at least 88% by 2031. Senior execs could enjoy the full benefit of Meta's stock options program if the company's share price jumps more than 500% within the provided time frame. Shares of Meta are down 4.2% in the past 12 months. In the past five years, the stock has risen 110%. "This is a big bet. These pay packages will not be realized unless Meta achieves massive future success, benefiting all of our shareholders. As with all stock options, there is only value if the share price meaningfully exceeds the exercise price, and in this case, it must be on an exceedingly aggressive 5-year timeline," according to a Meta spokesperson. The move by the company comes amid heavy infrastructure and talent spending to stay ahead in the artificial intelligence race against rivals Google ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ), Amazon ( AMZN ), and Microsoft ( MSFT ), while scaling back on efforts that haven't been profitable, such as the metaverse initiative by its Reality Labs division. Sign up here As I am nostalgic and of a certain age, I recently bought a VHS video recorder, just for the retrospective thrill of it; then I won a 32-inch CRT television at an auction in Shepton Mallet. Partly, this was to play a few old videos I had found in my loft, including one of me appearing in a 1990s youth TV show talking about sexism and Tomb Raider. (I was against the sexism, to be clear). But it was also because I wanted a new way of spending my money on fragile video-game nostalgia. The rise of the games industry in the 1980s and 90s coincided with the explosion of the home-video business, and the two crossed paths in lots of interesting ways. There are the obvious treasures I want to get hold of: VHS copies of Street Fighter: The Movie and the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, naturally, as well as early games-inspired hits such as The Last Starfighter, The Wizard and WarGames. I rented most of these from my local video shop in the 80s – which, like many others, also sold computer games by the budget publisher Mastertronic, another interesting (at least to me) crossover between these two entertainment formats. Sundry Photography Arm Holdings ( ARM ) was in the spotlight on Wednesday as Wall Street analysts praised the semiconductor intellectual property firm for launching its own data center-focused CPUs, and its updated sales forecast brought on by the new chips. Shares rose 12% in premarket trading. “The strategy offers significant revenue growth and earnings potential longer-term ($9+ EPS by FY31) but comes with gross margin dilution (40%-50% for chips vs. 98%+ for IP) and channel conflict issues,” RBC Capital Markets analyst Srini Pajjuri wrote in a note to clients. “While the business model debate could continue, we expect the stock to largely trade on NT fundamentals, which remain solid on Agentic AI inflection, DC share gains, and CSS/v9 ASP tailwinds.” On Tuesday, Arm CEO Rene Haas projected 2031 annual revenue at $25B (and $15B from the new CPU), more than six times its 2025 level. The company is targeting roughly 15% of the $100B total addressable market in server CPUs and expects roughly $1B in revenue in fiscal 2027 and 2028. Morgan Stanley analyst Lee Simpson said Arm's focus on compute efficiency (the 136-core Arm AGI CPU has up to 136 V3 cores per CPU, offers 6 GB/s memory per core at sub-100 ns latency, and uses around 300 watts of electricity) could help customers looking for low-power compute, including companies like Meta ( META ) and OpenAI ( OPENAI ). “So, this isn’t a replacement of Grace or Vera chips at NVIDIA, but at the head node (near the xPU) for the likes of Cerebras, for networking (routing) at F5 and maybe even general CPU use in enterprise set-ups,” Simpson wrote in a note to clients. “Arm's strategy is fueled by partnerships with cloud providers that seek to optimize total cost of ownership (TCO) and reduce energy consumption, allowing them to allocate more power budget to GPU compute.” Simpson, who has an Overweight rating and a $135 price target on Arm, added that the cost of Arm's AGI CPU could be discounted compared to offerings from I...
