2026年1月26日,人工智能公司Anthropic的首席执行官Dario Amodei在其个人网站发布了一篇题为《The Adolescence of Technology: Confronting and Overcoming the Risks of Powerful AI》(技术的青春期:直面并克服强大AI的风险)的长文。

Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. agreed to pay $40 million to settle US Securities and Exchange Commission allegations that former executives sought to boost a flailing business unit’s bottom line to meet company targets, the regulator said Tuesday. The Chicago-based company didn’t admit to or deny the SEC’s allegations. Two former executives, Vince Macciocchi and Ray Young, agreed to pay more than $500,000 each including disgorgement and civil penalties. “We are pleased to put these matters behind the company,” said ADM Chief Executive Officer Juan Luciano. ADM also said the Department of Justice had closed its investigation of the company with no further action. The SEC also filed a lawsuit against the company’s former Chief Financial Officer Vikram Luthar, accusing him of coordinating a series of adjustments that shifted operating profits from other ADM units to prop up the nutrition segment. Junaid Zubairi, an attorney for Luthar, said the regulator’s case was “meritless.” “The SEC unjustly seeks to hold Mr. Luthar accountable for long-standing business practices at ADM,” Zubairi said in a statement. “The transactions in question were transparent and were considered, approved, and implemented in good faith at the company.”

wildpixel/iStock via Getty Images By Jennifer Nash The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index plummeted to its lowest level since 2014 in January, dropping 9.7 points to 84.5. This is the steepest drop in over four years and was lower than the forecast of 90.6. The latest reading puts the index in the 28th percentile of the data series. The Present Situation Index, which is based on consumers' assessment of current business and labor market conditions, fell 9.9 points to 113.7. Meanwhile, the Expectations Index, which is based on consumers' short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions, dropped 9.5 points to 65.1. Note that a level of 80 or below for the Expectations Index historically signals a recession within the next year, and the index has been below 80 since February 2025. “Confidence collapsed in January, as consumer concerns about both the present situation and expectations for the future deepened,” said Dana M Peterson, Chief Economist, The Conference Board . “All five components of the Index deteriorated, driving the overall Index to its lowest level since May 2014 (82.2)—surpassing its COVID-19 pandemic depths.” Peterson added: “Consumers’ write-in responses on factors affecting the economy continued to skew towards pessimism. References to prices and inflation, oil and gas prices, and food and grocery prices remained elevated. Mentions of tariffs and trade, politics, and the labor market also rose in January, and references to health/insurance and war edged higher.” Read more Background on the Consumer Confidence Index The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index measures the consumers' attitudes and confidence in the economy, business conditions, and labor market, with higher readings indicating higher optimism. The general assumption is that when consumers are more optimistic, they will spend more and stimulate economic growth. However, if consumers are pessimistic, then spending will decline, and the economy may slow dow...

While AI chip stocks continue to garner outsize attention, smart analysts are looking elsewhere for growth. Prior to the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, the trillion-dollar club only had three members: Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet. Since OpenAI released ChatGPT to the world and forever changed the technology landscape, several more companies have achieved trillion-dollar status. While semiconductor stocks have become some of the most influential contributors to the AI boom, Wall Street has its eyes on another platform as the next big opportunity. Let's dig into how Meta Platforms (META +0.09%) is quietly leading the AI supercycle and assess why the company is poised to continue disrupting its big tech counterparts. How is Meta deploying AI? Meta's peers have ambitious AI road maps -- promising to revolutionize society through autonomous systems and humanoid robots. While the upside from these moonshots is enormous, physical AI applications remain years -- if not decades -- away from commercial deployment if they are successful at all. Meta is taking a drastically different approach. The company has one of the clearest ways to showcase how AI is already making a positive impact on its business. Meta Advantage+ is redefining how companies and consumers interact with digital ads. While this might sound a little mundane, Meta's results since launching this product are so good they are almost impossible to believe. A proxy fight for control and influence in the company has begun. CoStar Group (CSGP +0.71%), the owner of familiar real estate websites Apartments.com and Homes.com, eked out a slight win on the stock exchange Tuesday. On news that an activist investor is trying to influence company governance, investors bid the stock up by 0.6% on the day. This edged past the S&P 500 index's 0.4% gain. Third point makes a point That activist is hedge fund Third Point, headed by well-known veteran investor Daniel Loeb. On Tuesday morning, the firm sent a letter to CoStar's board of directors, urging major changes at the company. In a letter made public by Third Point, the hedge fund's management said it will propose several new directors to the board. It also said CoStar should take "immediate action" to improve its operations, including considering strategic alternatives for Homes.com and its associated residential real estate businesses. Third Point pointed the finger of blame squarely at CoStar's current leadership. It sharply criticized "the weak board oversight, misalignment of management incentives, and disastrous capital allocation policies that allowed CEO Andy Florance to sink billions of shareholder dollars into an ill-conceived and hopelessly executed strategy to build an online classifieds business in the residential real estate (RRE) industry." Continue » Nvidia announces a major CoreWeave investment Nvidia, the company at the very heart of the AI boom, announced late yesterday that it is expanding its backing of *CoreWeave*, the AI-first cloud computing operator. The chipmaker purchased $2 billion in Class A shares of CoreWeave at an average price of $87.20 per share as part of an expanded partnership. What that means for Applied Digital As a key partner of CoreWeave, this was a big win for Applied Digital as well, helping alleviate fears that the heavily leveraged company's core customers won't be able to make good on their commitments. AI stocks have been on a seriously big and incredibly fast run over the past couple of years. The parallels to the dot-com crash are easy to draw. Both that event and the current AI bull market centered on incredible new technologies that promise to change the way we live and work. While the internet has already done that, and AI certainly has the potential to do the same, possible over-speculation and billions of dollars pouring into AI have cast doubts on the short-term viability of AI investment. A man on trial for bludgeoning four men to death with a metal bar as they slept on the New York streets had been diagnosed with schizophrenia when he left jail months earlier and was hearing voices telling him he needed to kill 40 people or he would die too, his lawyer told jurors on Tuesday. Randy Santos, 31, is asserting an insanity defence at his trial in state court in Manhattan. Through his lawyers, he has acknowledged committing the 2019 Chinatown rampage. But, they argue, he is not criminally responsible because mental illness has polluted his mind with irrational thoughts and left him prone to violence. If they succeed, Santos could be sent to a psychiatric treatment facility instead of prison. Advertisement “He needed the voices to stop. he needed to save his own life,” Santos’ lawyer, Marnie Zien, said in an opening statement. “He saw no other way out.” Santos, 31, has pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder in the deaths of Florencio Moran, Nazario Vasquez Villegas, Anthony Manson and Chuen Kok and attempted murder charges for assaults that left two other men severely injured. They were among 319 killings in the city in 2019, including 52 in Manhattan.
